    I used to enjoy Marathons, and then they changed the name to Snickers and they didn't taste as good.

    Yup, there are a lot of images, I think Alarmy has over 1000, and the series has plenty of video shots of some of the buildings. Part of the problem is that there is no 'one place' where you can take a photo that includes the whole scene, plus the landscape is very three dimensional, there are several steep cliffs. The map I mentioned at least shows where paths are, and indicates where the paths are steep slopes.. I was convinced that the main path was a square, even after walking around the place, but the map shows it is more of a U shape, with a narrow path joining to make a square. I think it gives the impression of a square because the main garden area is sort of square, but not level.

     

    If you wanted to return to the Catalympics some time in the future I'm sure that would be fine, I'm sure Richard needs to train for it, and it would be a pity not to get more use out of the leotards that you put work into making.

    But marathon WAS the original, they rebranded the chocolate bars to snickers some years ago!

    In the US, Snickers was always Snickers. Snickers was introduced in the US in 1930.

    Snickers was introduced in the UK in the 1960s.

    In the UK, (allegedly) they were named Marathon because the name sounded like Knickers.

    In 1990, Marathon was changed to Snickers in the UK.

    Yes, Richard went above and beyond in tackling this task! I thought he was only going to move the latest random tangents about cars, and candy bars, and stuff like that. Instead he went through everything. What a heroic effort! I really want my story thread to be more focused on the story and less on random topics. You can see by the posts moved here, that Richard and I are among the people who get into off topic posting. It is so easy to do. But now there is a place for that.

    That lady has a screechy voice! People in the comments were raving about her. I could barely understand a word, but I do know this song! Maybe my cheap headphones are bad.I couldn't get the video to play directly, but YouTube played it OK. 

    Somewhere is this thread. Someday is now. Look how well behaved we all are, posting here! There's hope for us yet.

    Wendy, comments about the renders and story are welcome in the story thread. I just didn't want pages of unrelated discussions that deviate more and more from the story. It breaks up the flow.

    I follow your posts and wanted to say that I appreciate how you share it with everyone. The twists and turns can be quite unexpected!

    +1 on staying the need to stay on topic. A good signal to noise ratio is hard to come by in an open forum. It takes a fair amount of effort to stay in the creative zone.

    The question is, are they comments on the story or images or are they comments on something sparked by the images and story (e.g. chocolate bars and then on to Greek History)? It's the latter that Barbult wishes to be separated, as they cause pings not related to the main "point" of the thread. It is always hard to know quite where to draw the line (and I haven't looked at the latest posts in the actual render thread, but if it turned into a discussion of musical instrumnets then it would probably come over here).

    This "discourse" thread is a great idea. People need one, if only to "diss" (slang) or to "curse" or what not.

    For good or for ill, we live in a cacophonous world. It's hard to think, much less find one's way to that inner zone where we turn creativity into some form of decent output. Is it any wonder that craftsmen cluster in communes, sharing workspace not just to help one another but also to live off of each other's creative energy? Or is it unusual for writers to head off the grid, to a shack in the wilderness or a patch of earth across the seas? 

    Yet just the same, creativity isn't altogether a cloistered pursuit. I've heard of creatives who flock to the big city, with all its noise and hazards, or step away from their comfort zones and travel to foreign lands, to discover their raw material -- the ups and downs of human nature -- and spin these into stories. And so, Mr. Speaker, going back again to that phrase, it's not "signal versus noise" but rather managing a healthy mix between signal and noise. Only a fool would turn away from randomness, the right sort, the ones that are serendipitous. Bob Ross: Happy Accidents.

    Whether the noise, the randomness, or the accident is the "happy" sort ... please leave that to the creative soul to determine. Let's respect their space as well as their judgement.

    I prefer to think of it as harmonic distortion, rather than noise,  well apart from the totally random things like the Covenanter's prison. I hardly ever comment, I mean I'm on 902 posts, and that's taken 22 years.

    • This is all going well! I'm enjoying both threads. There are entertaining comments in both threads, and they are placed in the best thread for each one. 
    • Noise, harmonic (reminds my of Phil Harmonica) distortion, or whatever, is just stuff that distracts from the main sound you are trying to hear (the signal, Richard's life as I see it). It is not unnatural, it is just something often filtered out to hear the signal clearly. 
    • Wendy's "incidents" are probably just an indication that she has her own unique way of expressing her ideas. Good for you Wendy. 
    • I doubt if Richard was thinking of dissing and cursing, but it is certainly a clever interpretation of discursion. I got a kick out of it.
    • background, I appreciate your comment quality control process. That which comes out in the end is great. I wonder what was discarded along the way. Maybe best not to know?
