Around and young enough to have thought the 'mod look' was cute and sexy. But during a road trip back from Newport RI to my base in D.C. with my roommate, in her original yellow V.W. Bug, we got stuck on the Jersey Turnpike in a 3 hour traffic jam. Temps around 90F. And the AM stations had on heavy rotation every Beatle album. I learned to hate The Beatles and will get ill if I hear their music.

If I learned this right, 'Hey Jude' was named for Julian Lennon, because that is what his nickname was to the band and they would call out 'Hey Jude' when he came by.

    I might be wrong.

Does America by Paul Simon also cause problems,  with its reference to the Jersey Turnpike?

Why do I want to say Hey Jude when I think of Jude?

    That is obscure to me.

I get the connection, but many today probably wouldn't.  The Beatles song, Hey Jude, was in the late '60's.  Very popular at the time.  But I don't hear the name anymore, except the children's hospital name.

I know the song (it's a bit younger than me), I was rferring to Jude the Obscure by Thomas Hardy

My kind of literature - classics.  Possibly better known to some people as the author of Far from the Madding Crowd, The Return of the Native or Tess of the D'Urbervilles.

    complaint: The saga continues.

When last we left our intrepid (exhausted, oh-so-over-it) hero, she had been informed that the New Program started on 5/1, replacing the Program Which Replaced The Old Program, which had caused a truly epic amount of butt pain to onboard/transition onto, only to last for a month.

Paperwork happened, I was assured I would be notified if anything else was needed, and I foolishly thought "well, hey, maybe we're finally to the end of it."

Narrative voiceover: She was not, in fact, to the end of it.

    May 1 comes.... I can't enter a timecard.

Okay, I figure, I'll give it a day before I start whipping out the Crabby Stick.

Of course, May 1 is a Friday, so that means Saturday and Sunday.... also not working.

    Monday, still not working.

Got an email from my county rep saying everything should be good to go and to let her know if it's not. Of course, this was end of day.

Tuesday, I tell her it's not.

She gets back to me Wednesday... it really should, I need to go talk to the timecard place.

Email the timecard place. HR says that well gosh it's approved but not active and they're not sure why; my case manager will get back to me.

    Crickets.

    I follow up Thursday. Crickets.

I follow up Friday, asking if this couldn't please be dealt with before the weekend, given it should have been working a week ago.

    Crickets.

I'm about to email demanding a new case manager on Monday (today) when I get a reply saying oh well they still need a particular piece of paperwork from me (that I already sent) and some behind the scenes stuff is happening. and I'm going to be transferred to a case manager who specifically deals with the new program, but it should be good to go by the end of the day and FULLY good to go by the end of Tuesday (wait, what? What's the difference?) and to watch for the thing to sign!

I email back with the thing, asking why the one I signed two weeks ago wasn't good enough.

They then proceed to email MY MOTHER the paperwork and tell her she needs to sign it. At the very end of the day.

My mother is not legally authorized to sign it for the new program. Old program, yes. New program, no. I am listed on the new program paperwork/approval from the county as the legal rep. You'd think this would matter. Apparently not.

Mom forwards me the email. I have an "oh for pity's sake" moment (except with more swears) and proceed to email everyone on the planet explaining the situation and saying they really need to fix what's in their system because I'm pretty sure it's a legal faux pas to be sending it to Mom.

....and I get an autoresponder from the new case manager. She's out on 5/12 and will be back on the 13th!

    ...because of course.

    *bangs head on desk*

non-complaint: I managed to get Little Dude and I out for our walk and back before the driveway sealcoating people did their thing and trapped us inside for a day. Yay that.

LOL pretty sure the ship has sailed on the "minimal stress" but thank you for the thought.

I can't even comprehend the amount of vacation time these people get. I haven't had a day off since February of 2011.

Maybe they get stressed out. Or maybe they are off getting training in the current round of new systems (or their successor systems - I suspect this is like painting the Forth bridge).

Maybe somebody could train them on how to do their jobs, so I don't have to keep explaining it...

How do people in Western countries not know who the Beatles are?

    [snip...]

I don't know, but in my experience, it's not uncommon.  Although I have to admit that I'd never heard of Theda Bera or Rudolf Valentino when I was in my 20s.indecision  The Ed Sullivan Show was such an important part of my formative years.  It's a shame to think that his name on a theater in NYC means nothing to them.   I get similar blank stares when I mention Lowell Thomas, and even Walter Cronkite.  (Who, by the way, I imagine, is turning over in his grave recently).  Try mentioning "Kate Smith" (another guest on Ed Sullivan's show) and see who's still alive and remembers.

And then I remember a scene from the 1965 movie "Ship of Fools" where one of the shipboard passengers (Lee Marvin) as a professional baseball player who is drunk and depressed about his inability to have hit a curve ball on the outside corner, and relates a pathetic sob story to another passenger (Michael Dunn) about missing the ball in a big game,  Dunn counters and basically tells him to get over himself, by reminding him that most people in the world don't even know what baseball is.

Not everybody shares the same bubble.  Don't ask me who the hottest singers currently are, I stopped listening after the Moody Blues.frown

I have two kids of the current whippersnapper generation in my house, and the one who is capable of knowing things about music definitely knows who the Beatles are. Likewise Simon and Garfunkle (and probably knows the words to several songs).

...and now that I think about it, most of ther exposure to that generation of music all came from listening to music jams with a whole lot of hippie musicians (many of them OG hippies) after hours at Renn Faire, so maybe we're not a good case study.

More recent vintage, but Teen Kiddo's reaction to the original "Highway to Hell" was pretty funny, though. They were unimpressed and liked the cover from https://m.youtube.com/c/StaryOlsa better. I have to agree that the medieval instruments definitely add a certain something.

...I saw then in September of 1964  at the old Milwaukee arena.  We were on the floor near the stage, the tickets cost a "whopping£ 4.75 USD back then.  I remember waiting in line to see both  films, A Hard Day's Night and Help, as well as the closed circuit bravest of their Washington DC concert on that first American tour.

My mum love them and got us the tickets  She also let us buy all the 45 singles and LPs.

Adjusted for normal inflation since then those concert tickets would cost a little over 52 USD but back then there were no "middlemen" like we have today..

When Paul McCartney came to Portland in 2012 tickets were 110 USD for seats way in the back of the Rose Garden (the local sports arena) in the "nosebleed" seats.  I thought that was expensive.

Personally I still like them, my two favourite albums were Rubber Soul and Revolver in which they experimented with a variety of different musical styles.

@Richard Haseltine, no issues with Paul Simon's work. Or Simon and Garfunkle's. It was only The Beatles. But there was one song, 'You're Having My Baby' by Bobby Sherman (I think) played heavily when I was pregnant that I came to hate it. All I can say is that radio stations by playing an artist's music on heavy rotation often does them damage. Sometimes a little is better than a flood.

@Gordig, I was trying to be nice and avoid that. I am not a worshipper at the feet of John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

My music tastes have spread from Big Bands, Rock-n-Roll, Jazz, Classical, Hard Rock, Metal, World Beat, Gaelic/Celtic, R&B, Folk, Hip-Hop, Pop, Soul and Throat music. In other words, I am all over the place. Drums, bag-pipes, I love. Might be the Scot-Irish in me. Don't care where in the world it is from. I will stop what I am doing and listen intently. And my blood starts pumping. I am ready to go to war.

But screaming, high-pitched sopranos, no thank you. Hurts my ears.

@SilverGirl I am thinking you are either a saint or a great candidate for political office with your experience. Or both.

Complaint: Went to the ER yesterday. My wife went to an urgent care, and they called the ambulance. Her Blood pressure was 200/161, so she is home again with hypertension meds.

Complaint: Stress is still making it difficult for me to get up early.

Nothing like stress and pressure to get your day started.

I'll have to go for saint... political office would be my own personal hell. And given I apparently can't even get people to send forms properly, I would apparently be a very ineffective one.

Although hey, credit where credit's due... they finally sent the form to ME to sign!

... it still had my mother's name and all her contact info on it, but they sent it to me!

Not sure saints cuss as much as I do, though. LOL

    Complaint: the absurdity continues.

I am now registered in the online portal app thing as a representative.

But not as a caregiver (worker).

However, it tells me that even though I'm not a worker, I can as a representative log hours on behalf of my workers!

...except that no, I cannot log hours on behalf of myself, because I'm not in the system in that capacity.

    So it's still useless.

And I had to send another email.

As a Gen X former Gifted Kid, I've spent my entire life having excellence expected as the standard. Anything below exceptional was failure.

And while I get as an adult that the attitude around all that was super unhealthy, I absolutely cannot wrap my brain around why none of these people seem to be held to even the basic standards of mediocrity. What happened to "if you can't do your job, you shouldn't have it"??

Good, I think she isn't showing any sign of keeling over. Thanks for asking.

Did I ever finish troubleshooting that glitch? Did you report the Issue to Frontier? They are useful, and on top of their support, at least when I used them for Elite Dangerous. Did you buy the game from Steam?

Glad to hear it. Blood pressure issues are serious stuff.

I haven't reported the crashing issue to anyone, but yes, I bought it from Steam. It was on sale for like $3, so it's no big loss if I can't get it going.

Complaint:  Laundry day blues:  Ever had one of those days when it all looked rosy then you do something stupid to spoil it?  Yesterday was one of those for me.  I'd put off doing laundry for too long, trying to juggle needs, schedule, and finances but finally had an opportunity to make a trip with my laundry cart to my usual laundry day mini-adventure (Bus ride to BurgerKing, breakfast, laundry, drugstore, and a bit of grocery shopping, and an Uber to home).  Weather was a perfect warm, dry day miraculously squeezed into a week of rainy days.  Bus ride OK, breakfast OK, laundry OK, drugstore OK, grocery shopping OK... UNTIL the end.frown  I parked my clean clothes in my laundry cart at the grocery store service counter area, did my shopping, got in line for checkout and remembered that my eco-friendly cloth grocery bags were neatly packed on top of my laundry in the cart.  No problem, I toddled to my cart, retrieved my bags, returned to the checkout line, checked out & packed my bags, got my two bags into the grocery cart, wheeled it over to the service counter to throw away a dollar and buy a NY State lottery ticket (if you don't play you won't win).  Sat on the bench in front of the service counter, six feet away from my laundry cart, to call an Uber for my ride home.  Watched the Uber app as my ride approached in 8 minutes.  Wheeled my grocery cart with the two bags of grocery out to the entrance.  Rode all the way home (7 miles), unpacked my groceries and at the bottom of the bag was a brand new bottle of laundry soap, and BRAIN FLASH, where's my laundry?????  indecision  Arghhh...!!!  (*Sigh*)  OK, no big deal, I'll just check with my friends if anybody's going up town later this afternoon.  (I hate bothering my friends for rides.  Long story, I just don't like doing it).  But nope, either I can't reach them, or they're not available.  (*Sigh*)  OK, a bigger deal than I thought.  My budget limits my Uber riding to about two or maybe three long Uber rides (from city to home) a month.  At least $30 each.  I'd already had two this month and the ride home had been the third, now I was faced with two more to retrieve my laundry. sad

Sure, I could have left the laundry there for a day or so until a friend could give me a ride or pick them up for me, except for the fact that I had food in one of the pockets of the laundry cart.  I had a BurgerKing "Breakfast Burrito" intended to be breakfast at home the next day, but knew that it wouldn't wait 24 hours before it leaks or starts molding (ask me how I knowfrown)  In the end, I did have to take two more long Ubers that day.  Which means I can't go uptown for at least three more weeks, to get back in budget balance.  Which as it turns out, according to my calendar, won't be absolutely necessary anyway, although would be desirable to avoid cabin fever.blush

I compensated a little by cancelling an Amazon order that was way behind schedule and hadn't shipped yet.  I'll get along just fine without a dozen more cans of peaches in my pantry.

Getting old hasn't been as much fun as the poster said it would be.cheeky

Trips to the ER are NOT fun. No matter the facility. I have been reading your posts @AgitatedRiot and can only wish the best for your wife and for your patience. Bless you and hugs.

@LeatherGryphon - I have been there. And I wasn't even 30 then. It sucks. My clothes were partially stolen. I won't bore you with the details, but never trust someone's word.
