was thinking of getting a month of Daz+ to see if there is anything worthwhile for Carrara but thought I'd ask here first if any Carrara users are currently in Daz+ and if they find it of any use?

I joined a month ago and no, not really

I have been fossicking through the Outlet though at half the price and it is probably worth it for that

  • StezzaStezza Posts: 8,885

    I thought so.

Not interested in anything G9 or 8

just thought there may be a heap of free props available as I haven't been a member in a long while and one month on special price I thought may of been worth it.

the DAZ+ freebies are mostly B&W rooms and corridors

a Martin Frost plant set if lucky

I eyed them off here a year before rejoining and knew I wasn't missing much https://www.daz3d.com/platinum-club-freebies#index=0&filtered=1

the $6 DO coupon offsets some of the subscription

and now the early 3D programs

Maybe not as early as you mean, but I have fond memories of Bryce V.3  (1997 by MetaCreations), the first version to offer animation as I recall.  And the inspiration for one of the best 3D software books ever, "Real World Bryce 4" by Susan Kitchens and Victor Gavenda.

"During development of Bryce 3D and 4, there was only one source for determining how Bryce "should" work! You guessed it! we used Real World Bryce 2!"

     - Brian Wagner, Bryce 4 Lead Engineer

(Not sure about all the versions #'s, but the first one with animation is what I'm talking about - the CD with the book had a lot of animation tips/examples like cameras on hinged poles)

    meanwhile in Twinmotion

it has OpenStreetMap urban mesh generation built in

so... I typed in a very bad island

and it loaded all the roads, buildings and vegetation

not terrain but that was easy to sculpt around the structures with a Google Earth reference

might try Datasmith to get it into Unreal Engine then into Carrara

    won't be naming this island

I probably should use Terrain Party to get an accurate terrain

is gone crying not sure how to use Ground Control

    getting outage error on https://apps.nationalmap.gov/downloader/#/?z=16&y=18.298905793037623&x=-64.82357077301239&basemap=usgs_topo&datasets=elevation-topobathy&layerIds=elevation-topobathy-dem,elevation-topobathy-dem

OpenStreetMap and OSM2World Java program gave me a similar result to Twinmotion in obj format

not my preferred option as flat but only one that works

    NASA topography also not downloadable

maybe I can use the Google Earth image to edit a rough terrain greyscale image map

  • My first 3D program was Swivel 3D. It was in black and white. Not even grey scale. It was originally made by Paracomp then sold to Macromedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paracomp

Mac seems to have been way ahead of Windows with 3D

is this what the object accuracy basically does in Carrara?

or reading the online help PDF, is it more filter sharpness

in any case, it seems an interesting technique

Was watching my C drive space which was rapidly filling up leaving me with 6 GB of space. Was concerned that if I got a windows update my system would come to a halt due to running out of room.

Downloaded WizTree, installed than ran it.

It identified a number of temp files which were deleted.

Now have a healthy 58.5 GB of free space !!!

C:\Users\Wendy your name\AppData\Local\Temp fills up and it's contents worth deleting regulary

    your Carrara tmp folder too

often C:\Users\your name\Documents\DAZ 3D\DazTmp but you can choose somewhere else in preferences

I had Windows Search Indexing turned on - it was using up nearly 38 gigs of space. Turned it off.

Also had a program called PDFill PDF Writer (Free) installed. When I found an article on the web I wanted to keep track of I was printing out a PDF of that article with it.

It was storing temp files everytime I used it, generating over 20 gigs of temp files.

    been a bit quiet here

I admit I only briefly opened Carrara the other day to load a DAZ Studio set that needed too much work

Getting more and more into DS 4.24 for backgrounds for Carrara images/animations.  And really liking the one item per day for ~$2, my recent monthly credit card statement had 26 DAZ charges, most for a couple of dollars, items with a retail price of 10x that +/-.  cheeky
