scorpio64dragon, what is this "mesh" light a couple of you have mentioned? Is it included with the Iray stuff, or something else?
And omg she is so cute! LOL
I little pic just did took about 2 hours to render, not much changed from the standard setup no lights as such using the one that comes as standard, and added bloom.. This was more a test of the textures and was happy that they transported over something I could never get Reality / Luxrender to do..
Quick - but very necessary - questions:
How are skydomes? In Reality, they're impossible to use, which is a big shame, as I could never find any satisfying space or night 'Smart' HDR things which worked with it. Can we use the skydomes we've already got with this, without problem? In Reality, light couldn't penetrate them, meaning a scene blcked out.
Do you have to go through each individual material and convert/make sure it's been converted to a specific material pre-set, like Reality? It's not always necessary in there, but if you want guaranteed good results, you sort of have to.
Any problems with shaders? I recall Reality can't use some.
Any problems with rendering geografts?
Geez, Iray rocks. The renders - and mind you I only managed to see the first page - look like PHOTOGRAPHS.

Its just a plane from Light Presets>omnifreaker>UberAreaLight.
The figure is G2F a bit of Aprilysh's Calais, a bit of Giselle and a bit of Smay's Nata.
So, been playing around with Iray. Still haven't worked out how to use GPU instead of CPU for rendering, and that's after optimizing all of the texture files to low resolution alternatives. It should fit easily in my VRAM, but it seems Daz is intent on using my CPU. Oh well.
Either way, it looks very nice. I'm impressed with the results so far, even though I'm still getting to grips with the material settings. I made a few tweaks here and there to try and get a more realistic appearance, but it still needs a bit of work.
Wow. That's one of the best ones I've seen so far.
I won't really have a chance to play with the new renderer until this weekend, but I'm getting pretty psyched up by the sample work that's already rolling out.
I couldn't find the GPU option in the Render Settings either, but then I clicked on Advanced, and there it was. Does it about 20% faster using my GT 420, but at least it is a saving. Must look at getting a better card for my next machine.
Yeah I'd say Iray has raised the bar for what's possible in DAZ Studio with no additional plugins. Think I'm in love.
Headlamp blocker: as long as you are using an actual camera the headlamp is now a setting on the camera, so you can turn it off without having to load a special blocker when using mesh lights. You can also offset it from the camera, which should avoid the specular highlights dead-centre that you get with the old headlamp.
Area lights: the new PM lights, in the Create menu, have settings to let them behave like area lights (the spot, for example, can be a point (the usual), a rectangle, a disc, a sphere or a cylinder) so you can get the effect of a mesh light without having to create one.
Wow, that looks great on our stargirl trooper outfit...
So does this only work with nVidia GPU's? It's not showing my Radeon R9 even under advanced.
Doesn't it just? I'm going to have a lot of fun with that outfit and the Iray shaders over the next few days, that's for sure :)
Sisca, I asked the exact same thing here:

Grey wulf, keep going, I'd love to see more. ;)
First Iray render, Straight CPU.
All textures are straight out of the box.
Using the Skydome texture in the Environment settings and some heavily overblown distant lights which seem to do okay if you turn of limits and blow them right out. I notice they leave some dots in the scene from their origin though.
Thanks Daz, I'm looking forward to playing more with this :)
Very nicely done Razor! Particularly on a first go with out of the box textures.
It's killing me that I am stuck at work today. I only discovered the beta last night at 9PM. Took an hour to download and had only about a half hour to experiment.
This development has increased my faith in DAZ exponentially from where it dwindled to. Yesterday I didn't have an anticipation of a new feature like this and now my doors have been blown off...
Con... Looks like I have to re-learn a whole new set of tools, but at least some of the Reality / Lux knowledge will transfer...
Pro... I feel so much better about investing in my NVIDIA card last year. (I purchased it to use with Octane and was so disgusted with Otoy that I returned all of their software, but kept the hardware.)
Here is a quick render I did. It appears as though iray puts in some sort of ground plane, as the shadow extends past the actual ground for this environment.
EDIT: This actually looks more like a Poser render to me.
Here is a test render I did using the Serena texture from FWart. I love the iray renderer. This is with Serena HD morphs, too, and iray handled the hd geometry perfectly.
Added three more pics... sorry about the bald Bree :)
It won't use AMD GPUs, but it will still render using the CPU - it will take longer, but you will get the same end result.
oh yes, it's there! Thanks. Er, what does it do?
I'm having trouble locating stuff in the beta as it defaulted to some layout that I don't use, and I can't find my preferred customized layout that I use in the general release version, to set it in the beta version. So I'm scratching through places trying to find stuff LOL
I found the Shader Presets, and was playing with a robot. LOL. Intentionally, so they don't conflict, the Beta and the Release version only share the database, nothing else.
So effectively DAZ brings out an updated product that will only serve those using nvidia and leave those with Radeon cards with longer rendering times.
When will the update arrive for Radeon graphics cards?

Yes :)
For those looking for the documentation:
Nvidia Iray:
Nvidia Iray Documentation
Iray Uber Shader:
Iray Uber Shader Documentation
These documents are fluid and will change over the course of the beta to add/clarify more information. :)

So anyway this happened. Don't judge me.
Brilliant renders everyone! I'm loving this.
It's so fun to learn something new. Thank goodness the DAZ people are helping us figure it out by posting in the forum! Here I applied the Iray Optimized Genesis 2 Male MAT and tried out DOF.
You mean ATI, I assume, Spooky? I think you realise that your Radeon users aren't going to be happy or feel slighted by being left out?
Grey, nice, candy red stormtrooper. ;)
To those trying to use a Skydome in their scene....
Either delete the dome and use an HDRI in the Environmap property (Render Settings > Environment)
Hit render
Or, Select the Skydome Surface
Hold CTRL and apply the Iray Emissive (See image 01 to find the shader)
Next in the property, crank the Emission waaaay up. Like 50K Luminance units (cd/m^2) (See image 02)
Hit render :)
(Ok the forum reversed the images, but you should get it. :) )

No, he means Nvidia. Iray is made by Nvidia.
