And I cannot tell you the LIGHT YEARS of progress my son has made since he was four. He's certainly not NT, but he's so much... calmer, able to communicate, and social. :-) I pray you have the same blessings we've had.

Mine is still going trought the diagnosis, for now we know for sure that he has ASD- Autistic Spectrum Disorder , just none is quite aqurate to describe him, bur since there were clear signs before his 3rd year, there is more talk about a "Central Autism "?? ( this is ho would you translate it from dutch?
I cannot even express the progress he made in last year.. he talks ( not much, bur can say he's hungry or thirsty), plays, even rememvers names of his fellow children from the Therapy Centrum :D:D
I do have an idea, there are certain characteristics, that we can do ( not looking in the camera would be the clearest, but we all no not truest ;) )

I remember your story from my other thread! And I've always wondered how diagnosis and intervention happened in other countries. It's kind of a mess here in the US because in many states, private insurance does not have to cover speech or behavioral therapy unless it is caused by a head injury. Government assistance is VERY linited. The schools do almost all the work (and my son's schools have thankfully been amazing.) However, children in my state cannot enter the public schools until age 3. Evan also had clear signs very early, but we couldn't afford treatment. Evan had virtually no words at age 3. Still, he's come so far! He still doesn't have "conversations," but he will clearly ask things like, "Mom, can you get the ipad charger? The batteries are low." And though he as an aide with him, he is in a regular classroom, able to sit through entire lessons. When he was 4 he couldn't be in the regular class for more than 10 minutes before he lost focus and began getting frustrated.
I think I understand the "central autism" idea. Here in the US (and maybe around the world?) diagnosis is done according to the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). In the 4th edition, autism and Asperger's fall under a category of communication disorders called "pervasive developmental disorders." (PDD for short.) Under this set of criteria, there isn't much room for an entire spectrum. Kids with "autism" according to the DSM would likely be the "central autism" you spoke of. And so, by these narrow definitions, other people on the spectrum are either Asperger's or "PDD-NOS." (pervasive developmental disorder, not otherwise specified.) It's a nightmare because without the official, medical "AUTISM" label, children here get little or no assistance outside of school.

I did not know BWSman, but I think his attitude is one that my family is trying to imitate. No matter what has happened or what has been "lost," there is still SO MUCH to experience in this amazing world, even if it has to happen in a slightly different way than we expected. I'm very, very glad that this thread caught my attention. He sounds like he was the kind of person I'd have liked to meet.

I'm very sorry to hear, that there is actually so little help, available. In here , Netherlands , the treatment falls into the "Common Law for Special Healthcosts".
Oh it is amaizing, isn't it? my son loves to listen to the music on my phone, and if he wants it, he says "Would yu like mommy's phone? ".. stuff like that with everything from sandwiitch to the walk, or playing outside. He started in a special "diagnostic centrum"in November last year, when he went there, he barely listened, and communicated, when he left in April, he was at the stage of saying "Drink , Sleep", one words, but his eye contact and ability to actually play a game of ball trowing blew me away ;) Now since april he is in the group of "school preparations"he can count to 45 !!, and is really good at forms not only 2 dimensional, but also 3 dimentional :)
Oh yes same criterium, but I messed up the words ;) I ment Core Autism. we will probably end up with NOS-PDD, they cannot clearly tell, since he still develops, especially socially and emotionally ( he can say if he is happy, sad or angry.. yes he says that in words!!). We devote a lot of time, patience and love every day, and every day we see new results!

So "Central Autism" would basically be midway along the "autistic spectrum," I gather. More like my own son, then (the old "PDD-NOS", or about midway in developmental delay severity between "classic" or severe autism and the milder Aspergers, like my own, that frequently passes undetected until into adulthood. I can even pass as NT if I choose to, from time to time. I don't know if my son ever will.
There are several members of this board, in fact, who are openly ASD: one at least is a vendor in the store.
Eustache, I am far from knowing all this ;) my son is almost 4, and took a lot of .. adjusting from us all. the time between "suspection" to definitiveness was about half an year ( or 8 moths, he was first time seen by orthopedagog in march 2012, when he was 2.5) , and just now discovering the diversity of spectrum.
But yes.. man, there is this whole of translation, I think what you mean by classic is what we cal here "Kernel"- Core, or main. It is the most sever case, and as per rule, as our "parents therapist"explained to us , children displaying clear signs of autism before turning 3 , are mostly classified as "classic"(again, the word ;) ) autistic.
I on the other hand like to think about my son as a changeling .. I know in the past it was a negative name, but by now, a child of fairy is rather nice, don't you think?
And by the way, it is so nice to talk with someone about this ( sorry guys for hijacking the tread!!) ... All around my friends who have children , would rather not hear me talking, since they're scared. And my son is in the therapy center, with 7 other children, who's parents live to far. So thank you. It feels really good :)
Here is my entry. I may try to do another, but this one was quite labor-intensive, so I'll see if time and inspiration allow another. In my render, I wanted to show how people with developmental -- not physical -- disabilities do many of the same things "non-disabled" people do, but often from a different perspective. Not a bad perspective, just a... different one. In my son's world, nothing is ever quite what you expect it to be, but it's beautiful in its own amazing way.
To understand my image fully, I must include the wonderful piece of prose which inspired it. It was obviously written by an American (sorry Krissy! :lol:) but I hope the idea behind it is universal. It's like Krissy says -- most other parents who go to "Italy" don't want to talk about "Holland," because they fear their next holiday might take them someplace they didn't plan to go. I imagine it's the same for anyone with any disability, developmental or physical. People fear the unknown. Opening other people's eyes takes brave individuals who aren't afraid to show how much LIFE can be LIVED no matter what your limitations. We're all limited in some ways. Living a full life in spite of them is what this thread is all about, I suppose. Anyway...
WELCOME TO HOLLAND

I am often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability - to try to help people who have not shared that unique experience to understand it, to imagine how it would feel. It's like this...
When you're going to have a baby, it's like planning a fabulous vacation trip - to Italy. You buy a bunch of guide books and make your wonderful plans. The Coliseum. The Michelangelo David. The gondolas in Venice. You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It's all very exciting.
After months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands. The stewardess comes in and says, "Welcome to Holland."
"Holland?!?" you say. "What do you mean Holland?? I signed up for Italy! I'm supposed to be in Italy. All my life I've dreamed of going to Italy."
But there's been a change in the flight plan. They've landed in Holland and there you must stay.
The important thing is that they haven't taken you to a horrible, disgusting, filthy place, full of pestilence, famine and disease. It's just a different place.
So you must go out and buy new guide books. And you must learn a whole new language. And you will meet a whole new group of people you would never have met.
It's just a different place. It's slower-paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy. But after you've been there for a while and you catch your breath, you look around.... and you begin to notice that Holland has windmills....and Holland has tulips. Holland even has Rembrandts.
But everyone you know is busy coming and going from Italy... and they're all bragging about what a wonderful time they had there. And for the rest of your life, you will say "Yes, that's where I was supposed to go. That's what I had planned."
And the pain of that will never, ever, ever, ever go away... because the loss of that dream is a very very significant loss.
But... if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn't get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things ... about Holland.

I rendered with depth-of-field on, so some of the background items are blurred for artistic reasons, but not beyond recognition -- they are certainly MEANT to be seen. In any event, there are more than 10 foreground (non-blurred) items, so I don't think I've broken the rules. And, OH MY GOSH, I forgot how looooooooong rendering DOF at high resolution takes in Poser!!

The "motel sign" obj was the biggest challenge. It did not include a UV template and it was all one group, so I had to generate a template in Hexagon and then fiddle with the map FOREVER before I had all the right textures on all the right parts. I also created displacement and bump maps. I need to check the licenses on the textures before I release the material settings as a freebie, but I think it will be okay, as none of the textures are redistributed in their entirety. I also re-textured the "Time to Play" shorts, which I can also package as a freebie material pose.
Render settings (in case anyone cares):
Raytracing, shadows, irradiance caching ON. IC set at 100. Pixel samples = 20, min shading rate = 0.8, camera F-stop = 6, DOF, displacement and smooth polys ON, postfilter = 3 pixels (gaussian), gamma correction 2.2 **SHEW!**

My up-close-and-personal experience with lifelong afflictions is limited to (a) seeing how my late sister's multiple sclerosis affected her, (b) accommodating a co-worker's deafness, and (c) my bad knee (which, compared to everything else mentioned so far, is nothing). I need this sort of perspective if I'm going to be a competent judge this month.

Learning of others who love not for their on self's but for those to whom love and understanding can make such a big difference in there lives just lifts my spirits. My argument with Arthur pales in comparison. May happiness, joy, and the love of living follow us all not just for this month's contest but for all time we are each given.

I'm going to join Krissy in thanking you for letting us hijack, lol. And it's funny, because as I struggled to decide how to render my son's disability, I kept thinking how, compared to someone who suffered from diabetes, lost two limbs, and experienced kidney failure that stressed his heart to the point it gave out... well, it seemed like nothing, too. But nobody's experience is "nothing." Not really. I think any limitation or disability can serve to make us more compassionate when we see other people suffering. I've got degenerative disc disease in my lumbar and cervical spine, so I COMPLETELY understand the frustration of having a body that doesn't do what it used to and causes pain and inconvenience. But then I hear the story of BWSman, I wonder what the heck I have to complain about!
What's the saying...? "I cried because I had no shoes. Then I met a man who had no feet." Sometimes, we look at others and we are the man without shoes. And sometimes others look at us an we are the man without feet. We all suffer, but we also can inspire each other. THAT is what matters!

Pros:
I like the toon feel and the way everything, even the boys skin, related to that feel. Everything just fits. I love the depth of field you used also. The colors are very cool.
Cons:
The render itself is very nice, noly thing I can find is that I was kind of wanting to see physical handicaps doind extra difficult feats. So everyone could SEE that it was a handicapped render. Not to say yours is not, but without your explination, I would have never known there was a handicap in this render. It's a visual think here...lol. I will still accept it because you worked so hard on it, and this little fellow does have a mental handicap.
