There's not normally alcohol in root beer, but I have seen 'hard' root beer/  Never had any, though.

    Definition of beer

1 : an alcoholic beverage usually made from malted cereal grain (such as barley), flavored with hops, and brewed by slow fermentation

2 : a carbonated nonalcoholic or a fermented slightly alcoholic beverage with flavoring from roots or other plant parts

    • birch beer

So beer doesn't need to be alcoholic.    in the middle ages they used to drink "small beer"
Small beer (also, small ale) is an ale that contains very little alcohol, typically about 0.75%  it was a favored drink in Medieval Europe and colonial North America as against more expensive beer with higher alcohol. Small beer was also produced in households for consumption by children and servants.
Until the mid-20th century, much drinking water was likely to make one sick because of poor sanitation. Practical experience showed that fermented beverages were less likely to produce illness. It is understood today that a fermented beverage that smells and tastes acceptable is likely to have a microbial balance in which favorable microbe populations have outcompeted unfavorable ones.

    Well, I'll be a son of a birch! :-|

Morning. Enjoying a little cool weather, has been under 70 the past 36 hours or so and ppl are noticeably less grouchy. On the down side the heat has taken out power lines and roads, is making stuff a little difficult the past couple of days :)

I haven't been around heat like that since I lived in Phoenix about 40 years ago...!  But it was a dry heat so 115f wasn't as bad as it could be.. unless you were road tar or an egg on the sidewalk!! :-O

Bew complaint: broadband connection is down, don't know if it's Spectrum or the cable moden.  Reset things several times, checked cables, I can connect to the router but there's no Internet and Windows says there's an issue with the modem.  Great, and me with no money to fix it!!

At least there's bandwidth on the phone for a while... :-|

Exactly why I don't buy my own modems anymore.  If it's theirs, they have to fix or replace it.  If it's mine, I'm screwed.  Been there, done that, didn't even get a tee shirt.

Yeah, I've got a DSL modem from my phone company.  They used sell them to you for $50 but would replace them for free if they broke.  (Lots of them did.)  I don't know how many times I've made a housecall to a computer repair customer and discovered that the cheap little DSL modem was flakey.  Either the unit itself or it's power supply.  I got to be expert at calling the phone company from my customer's home and getting them to come out and replace the modem.

Now days, they don't fix them for free unless you have a maintenance rider ($6) on your monthly phone bill.   That's $72/year.  I don't know what a good DSL modem costs these days but I'm not sure owning my own would be worth it.  Especially since their recent upgrade to my service.  They called me out of the blue about a year ago and said "since I was such a good customer" they were offering to significantly increase my bandwidth.  I mean not just double but several times the speed.  They finally convinced me that there would be no pressure and no hidden fee increase so I said yes.  A few days later they came in, ran a second phone line to my house, gave me a special modem that used two phone lines to distribute the bandwidth over and I now have about 5 or 6 times the bandwidth I used to have. I've not yet seen an increase in their fee but of course one or two of the "taxes" and state "fees" have just recently gone up by a dollar or so, but that happens every year anyway.

I've logged into this fancy new modem, changed the passwords and poked around at the settings, it's nice but I'm not sure I would want to buy one of my own, so for now I'll continue to "rent" theirs.

I'm actually quite happy with my DSL service but I am in an enviable position of being very close to the local phone distribution building (about three blocks away).  Many of my customers live out in the boondocks and DSL service is absymal, cable service is non-existant, satellite service is uber expensive and difficult to get (they need more satellites).  That leaves cell phone data service.  And dial-up service for some of my customers who are even out of reach of cell towers.  But I've come out and said I won't service computers in the home if they don't have high speed internet.   Although I do have one guy who brings his old computer in with dial-up service, I upgrade it while it's in my lab and he takes it back and uses dial-up on the farm.  What can you do?

My DSL sucks eggs, so I'm seriously considering getting satellite internet; price isn't significantly different for me.

The trick here is the Internet stuff is handled by someone else! So if tihs hits the fan I have to use my phone and email her.

Bandwidth is OK, as long as my Hulu works more or less smoothly and I can use email Y don't really care.  All my hufe downloads are done (months ago) and backed up on my 3TB eSATA drive.

At least the connection is back.. for no reason.. without explanation.  A WTF thing for sure. :-/

    ...got two.

...bus was 10 min late on a late Sunday evening risking missing the last tram to my neighboruhood.

...had to deal with a person on the tram who was looking to get into some sort of sociopolitical discussion with me while it was lat, I was tired from a full day, and just wanted to get home.  Could barely hear her as she spoke very quiet and was drowned drowned by the noise of the tram and my tinnitus (truth).  Tried to keep informing her that I was catching maybe about every other word at best (also truth) but to little avail.

I seen to have made a tactical error. :-/

I have a full box of Morning Thunder tea, so I figured I'd drink on it and save my Mint Magic and Earl Grey.

Three cups later, I have a raging caffiene buzz and am no longer sleepy in any shape, form, or fashion. :-|

Now drinking plain water and hot water with lemon juice.  At least I'm being useful, splitting my change bag into pennies+nickles and dimes+quarters.  Looks like about twenty-one bucks so far.  That's enough for food to get me to when I make my first Craigslist sale! :-)

Maybe I should jog around the block nakey wheeeeeeeeee... :-O
