If it's a receiver, does it have anything to receive?  Have you found all the right outputs and buttons?

I've been thinking about getting a receiver for FM radio to add to the TV/Computer/speaker system in my livingroom.  But I'm afraid I have to admit that I'm old fashioned, but modern equipment all seems to be new fashioned.  All I want is a good FM receiver with built-in amplifier that can drive half decent small speakers but everything I look at seems to have HD TV and a zillion inputs and outputs and enough power to make toast at twenty paces.

It's quite the plague.  Even real high-end systems aren't as componentized as when I was young, where I had a Pioneer amp, Pioneer FM receiver, Pioneer turntable, and a kick butt Denon cassette deck!  Now if you want a small desktop setup it's far more expensive than an all-in-one.

    Feh, I'm geezing... :-/

Instead of getting an expensive radio that can make toast, you can save a few bucks and buy a cheap toaster that also receives FM radio.

    haha!  not joking.  https://www.amazon.com/Platinum-ERT-6067-Maxi-Matic-Multi-Function-Stainless/dp/B00OIT6V5C

...no problem with that, I miss the old HiFi days myself.  So much better than what we have these days (save for those lovely but expensive tube monoblocks a few companies still make).

Once I save up a bit more money, going to take the old Kenwood (hand soldered transistor electronics before they went cheap and farmed their production to Asia) to one of those retro shops to get the left channel fixed.  Then time to pick up a good turntable (looks fondly over at the record collection) and another set of the JBL studio speakers like I used to have.  Will also connect the portable CD player in for the few CDs I have.

Old Kenwood, good stuff.  My ex got the Hafler tube power amp ($########%) but I'm kind of over it.  Kind of.

Thanks for the troubleshooting tips above re: silent receiver!  I have a couple more things to try before calling support and/or sending it back.

Just bought a new stereo receiver which has a very clean signal -- so clean that no sound comes out of it at all, not even static.  Bleh.

Does it have A/B buttons for output?  With the new microswitches, you sometimes can't tell if they're in the on position, because they don't really take a position, just a light touch to switch it on or off.  Sometimes, they will all switch to factory presets, which sometimes seems to be off, if you lose power or unplug and replug it.  Just a thought.  Likewise, if you haven't selected an input yet, it might be neutral.

I've heard about something called "DAZ Account Manager" which seems to help you keep track of everything you own, but I can't find it.

Can anyone tell me where the DAM thing is?

Complaint:  Weather sucks in Buffalo.  My local weather 60 miles south of Buffalo will be rain and in the 40s (F) but the TV weather guys and websites say Buffalo has black ice already and can expect more today.  So, my mini-adventure to the symphony to hear Scheherazade is kaput. crying

Non-complaint:  I just saved $120 for ticket, tolls, gasoline, restaurant food and overpriced intermission champagne.  Also, I don't have to dig the car out of the snow, I've eliminated driving angst,  I can eat more of my chocolate cake, finish off my bottle of brandy, and listen to my CD of Scheherazade through my headphones sitting in my recliner chair with my neck pillow and my granny blanket. yes

  • Just browsing around YouTube and found a recording of "The Great Gate of Kiev" the finale from Mussorgsky's "Pictures At An Exhibition".  Really nice version.  Lots of unusual nuances, voices & strange instruments..

Looks as if that's all there is, pity as it would have added to the other nine arrangements (plus the original) that I have.

Thanks, Dana. I have been checking all that: output indicator, input indicator, A/B, left/right, black/red.  It can tell whether or not headphones are plugged in, so there doesn't seem to be a short in that area.  Can't even get snow using a tuned FM station and headphones, with volume cranked up near max (and headphones not on my head, of course).  Tried a differerent outlet.

But tbh I just came here to complain, not troubleshoot. ;-)  Thanks for the helpful tips, though.

theres no beer in rootbeer,  juliette echo echo zulu  what a scam

  • ps1borgps1borg Posts: 12,776

Morning. Enjoying a little cool weather, has been under 70 the past 36 hours or so and ppl are noticeably less grouchy. On the down side the heat has taken out power lines and roads, is making stuff a little difficult the past couple of days :)

    Definition of beer

1 : an alcoholic beverage usually made from malted cereal grain (such as barley), flavored with hops, and brewed by slow fermentation

2 : a carbonated nonalcoholic or a fermented slightly alcoholic beverage with flavoring from roots or other plant parts

    • birch beer

So beer doesn't need to be alcoholic.    in the middle ages they used to drink "small beer"
Small beer (also, small ale) is an ale that contains very little alcohol, typically about 0.75%  it was a favored drink in Medieval Europe and colonial North America as against more expensive beer with higher alcohol. Small beer was also produced in households for consumption by children and servants.
Until the mid-20th century, much drinking water was likely to make one sick because of poor sanitation. Practical experience showed that fermented beverages were less likely to produce illness. It is understood today that a fermented beverage that smells and tastes acceptable is likely to have a microbial balance in which favorable microbe populations have outcompeted unfavorable ones.
