I had the great idea last night to uninstall everything from this computer.   Great idea?  not!

My bad day just continues to get worse.  I am home now but have no time to rest, write or do art as I think I am in trouble for I think not conforming to ideals.

May blossom's out! (and Spring just 3 weeks old too!) Gonna wander the hedgerows and "capture" some before the sun goes in. Look out for some very blossomy may trees in upcoming renders . . .

Morning. Autumn rain came at last and dumped three inches of water on us, everywhere you look brown is sprouting green and puddles like shards of glass are scattered all over reflecting the overcast grey sky :)

Just bought a motorcycle. The time I spend on the road will be time I won't be here buying things.

Bike will probably pay for itself.

  •  someone told me the skin on a character in a render looked "....just wrong" but they didn't specify what was wrong exactly, and I asked wrong how, and have gotten no response. and i'm pretty crap at making skin look nice, and this render seemed ok to me, so now i'm confused and a bit annoyed. and i just want them to

Did you ask for advice or is it unasked advice?

I hate it when I do art and show it to someone and they say everything they would have done different?  Wait!  I did the render if they wanted to they could do their own render with the tools found at Daz.  They did not pay for all the goodies I used from the store for the render.  They did not take the time to set up the render!   They did not render the thing?  Who are they to complain about all the details that I choose for the render?

Off my soap box time, but how about post your render here so we can figure out what is "wrong" with it?

I didn't specifically ask for advice, but I'm always up for constructive critisism. Especially about stuff that I know is a weak point for me. But it's not really helpful to tell me it's "just wrong". And I would post it here, but he's kind of very naked, I posted it on my DA account if you want to go look at it there.

And checking again today, the commenter still hasn't replied to inform me what's wrong with the render.

UGH. This is why I rarely post things.

Forgive my intrusion, I rarely uncloak, but you did ask a valid question. I looked at your picture. I can find nothing wrong with the skin texture itself. However, what caught my eye is that there is very little shadow difference as though he's completely surrounded by lights. It may be that the translucency is turned up high and he's generating his own light. If that was your intent, given Pearlescent is the title, then you've achieved that goal, but it deviates from "normal". As always, each sees only that which his "filters" permit.I am often bemused by details that one viewer sees while completely missing those I hoped (intended) them to notice.  I return whence I came. <bampf>

Ok, now that is helpful. Perhaps he is a bit overly lit. Lighting is another one of my weak points, and I guess trying to do a 3 point light set-up was a bad idea.

The three-point light isn't a bad idea, but you might lower the intensity of those lights by... oh... 20%. Also, try varying the intensity for each light rather than they all be uniformly 100%. My formula (and only mine) would be to set the rearmost light fairly high at an acute angle to the figure (say, directly above and to the rear shining down  (make sure it's not hitting the table directly, though). With the other two lights at different intensities to one side and the other. The three-point lights are great for highlighting depth.

I took a look and what struck me was the lighting. It's very flat, like there's too much ambient and not enough shadow. Make sure you've got the headlamp turned off on the camera - it can often blow out a lighting setup. I can see the reflection of the pearls in the floor, but not much in the way of shadows. I think it's because of this that the perspective looks wrong - he appears to have an enormous right arm and a tiny left one. I think that's the lighting not giving much sense of depth.

Ah, I see there's another comment here about the lighting. If you're doing a 3 point setup, try making separate renders with just each light on. That'll help you see their influence. Or try making them different colours, for example have the back/rim light blue and the fill light red, which will help you see where you need more or less light, and can produce interesting images in its own right.
