"most" here don't use content for commercial work, so not a deal breaker. It kinda goes without saying that unless you purchase a model or have someone make it specifically for you, then commercial use would more than likely be a no go.
There's plenty of freebies that allow commercial use. I have tons of them. And even as hobbyists, people should be concerned, as even something posted on youtube is commercial use. So to me and most hobbyists I know, we don't like to contaminate our assets with private use items. Even as a hobbyist you may wind up doing a commission at some point, and now you have to worry about which assets you can use. Thats why I say its too much hassle. I like to keep my asset library clean, so to speak, so I never have to worry about what I can use in a render. Just my 2 cents, so wasn't trying to offend, but I know a lot of people that think similarly. Usually if a freebie is too close to an actual real life model, its a dead giveaway that its not something I want to take a chance on using.
I agree with DvoraszeniaStudios regarding commercial use, as it is just too vague what "commercial use" means, so I much prefer items that allow this. Even if you used the item in an online contest, one could argue since you could win a prize, that is considered commercial use.
In the worst case scenario, without a REGISTERED copyright - if you rendered something using content that was vague about "commercial use" and the copyright holder sued you - the most they would probably be able to do would be to hit you with a "cease and desist" for the infringing content.
At which point, you've got to figure... the reason someone is pursuing something like that is because you're making some sort of material profit off the use of their intellectual property and they want a cut - and they're trying to force you to concede that cut in order to continue to use their IP.
Which is fair enough. So, negotiate with the IP copyright holder. If their terms are unreasonable, it is fairly easy to replace ANY digital content with unique content. Replace their content with an alternative piece of content that meets your needs and has licensing that you can work with - or create your own alternative content.
It doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me, either. I agree with FSMCDesigns. For casual users, it isn't a huge concern. When it becomes a concern, there is money involved, and then it becomes a business calculation for all parties involved - but there is ALWAYS a solution.
I ended up buying the police car, it was also in the Mega Fastgrab which came out cheaper than the regular Fastgrab. I think it looks kind of 70's in style and great for a retro style render. Seems like if you put emmissive lights on red blue light thing (I don't know what it's called) if you can that is, and new glass window shaders it could look descent. Anyway, I always do a lot of postwork so whatever doesn't look good I can fix in Photoshop. Plus I'll probably put an LAPD logo on it somewhere...
Ooh, I was right! 1970's! I Googled 1970's police car and got this!
Oh, Iray so great, soooooooooooooo real !! (big evil grin)
Even though it still sells, it's one of those products so old I kinda cringe when I look at it. And yet, I suck at cars, and doubt I could do THAT much better today. At least the mapping and the shaders would be better...
BTW, your War Mage outfit and Helms of History are my favorite. Nice work ! :)
For what it's worth, and I understand as a creator the impulse to bury it in the litterbox, as long as someone wants it, let it roam free!
Heh... I'm sorry I've made your police car such a hot topic in this post, Valandar - it wasn't my intent to call you out specificially as an artist... I understand that not everything any artist does is their best work, and it sucks to have someone rip apart something you created to the point where you feel the need to defend yourself. It was really designed as a throw away comment mostly intended to be funny. So, seriously... The closest I could get to creating a car myself in DAZ would be a primitive cube with spheres at each corner of it... It isn't like I'm really in a place to judge what YOU'VE created and are making money off of.
On the *other* hand... it looks like the comment has gotten you at least one sale that you wouldn't have gotten otherwise... so... I guess it is true that even negative publicity is better than no publicity at all. :)
Would you be able to update the mapping and shaders and either sell them as an upgrade package (like the IRAY update for the Ranger vehicle) or... if you were feeling generous, release them as freebies? Or would it have to be a whole new package separate from this one?
I probably wouldn't normally have bothered getting the car, but Val makes lots of cool stuff and I like to be encouraging. ;)
Plus, hey, $4.
Yes.... yes... I feel bad now... I've learned my lesson! I won't knock an artist for a 12 year old item in the store that is still moving product for the merchant. It was bad form.

Unless they agree to give me a kickback of 5% for any product my criticisms help move! Then I'll be as brutal as they want!
Spheres? You could at least use really short cylinders... (joke)
Honestly? You've just revealed the biggest secret in modelling almost anything - starting with primitives the right shape for what you want, then tweaking, adjusting, scaling, extruding in and out, and welding/collapsing bits. Except for the most unusual shapes (usually very organic shapes), this is how almost anything is made outside of ZBrush or Mudbox. It's not called "box modelling" for nothin' :D A hand, for example, is a box with five cyllinders coming out from the front, and a fifth one off the back poly of one side.
Been modeling too many monsters?
Oops...
Now if only I could transfer that knowledge usefully to actual modelling (I know, I just need to apply myself a bit, but too many interests, not enough hours in the day)
*counts*
That hand seems a bit polydactyl though
Bah. Miscounted, and consider most of my beasties have four fingers, not six. :D
I'm still trying to get my head around what is involved with modelling objects. I've got Cararra 8.5 Pro, and I've already ran through some tutorials that illustrated what is possible. I'd like to do more with that - but I'm not sure where to start, ultimately with the intent of maybe becoming a PA at DAZ and turning this from a money pit into something that can at least partially subsidize itself. :)
Consider that http://willbear.deviantart.com/art/Cluster-Cargo-Hauler-561561776 consists of a bunch of textured primitives.
Was that completely posed and rendered in DAZ Studio, or something else?
Totally Daz Studio, yes.
The textures came from FilterForge.
I'm a hobbyist and I won't use anything that doesn't allow commercial use. You never know. And I have far too much stuff to have to figure out if its okay to use if someone, some day, might want to purchase something. Its totally not worth the hassle. I think Reby Sky here in the store doesn't allow commercial use. I have passed over that more than once with regret but I'm just not willing to deal with it.
Wait, what? There are products in this store that aren't allowed to be used commercially? I thought they all had the same 'renders are fine, no redestributing the actual files' type thing.
Reby Sky can be used commercially. The only Daz store product which has restrictions beyond the standard EULA is http://www.daz3d.com/anna-marie-goddard-digital-clone
I often wonder why they even bother keeping that Anna Marie in the store - it's for V3, does not allow commercial use (and commercial can be stated as competition entries as well as selling a render) and to tell the truth...who the heck IS Anna Marie Goddard? I've never heard of her!
The product can be used commercially, just not in a way that implies she's endorsing a product, service, or entity. I assume she's better known in the Netherlands, but she was a Playboy model in 1994.
I know I'm late to this party but I was working yesterday. Here's a version with most of the materials reworked with iray shaders. The indicators could be turned off by painting over the texture map, but I didn't bother as I think it still looks nice :p
Since you brought it up, 1970's era Matador CHP from the same site with some quick IRAY shaders. Will would like this, only 2 textures for the doors, LOL
That looks *awesome*. It is a freebie? Do you have a link to it?
