Morning. Gentle rain falling from a luminous grey sky glossing brick and tarmac and mirrored towers with pale early morning shinning :)

dunno if they want the create date, or create timestamp zulu, doing both cuz which ever i pick will be the wrong one.

What do they do?  Give you a file extract and say, "Work with this!"  You should have specs before you start the process.  That's no way to work.  It's a sure way to waste time and get it wrong, and of course it will never be their fault, it will be yours.  I always got specs for the desired output before I tackled the job!

    Dana

This is probably a slight deviation from the general line of conversation, but there are two ways to work. smiley  At least two.

I always start with a vague idea and run with it.  The idea changes and refines, and what isn't working can be pitched to absolute oblivion.

No final specs in mind.  Ever.  That is way too confining.

    Good morning, everybody.  :-)

That's fine for art, but for writing code for a business application, it's terrible!

    Dana

OK.  smiley  I was going to ask "why," but I won't.

No creativity in writing code.  That's a shame.

No, there's plenty of creativity in writing code but usually clients don't want the risk involved.  A programmer on his own projects is just as much an artist as any fool with paint and brush.  But also code being commissioned is usually more objective than subjective.  Thus the finished product must be defined before starting.  Not that there couldn't be some creative means of getting to the end, but when a code writer unveils the finished product it damn well better be what the buyer wants.  Pretty bells & whistles don't sell well.

And creativity in the art world sometimes backfires also.  This is what happens when the artist is trusted too much: (hint it's supposed to be Lucille Ball but was quickly dubbed "ScaryLucy" by the residents of Jamestown N.Y.)

Note: you have to dig a bit to find the name of the artist.  Must be interesting to be known for this work.

Scary Lucy says, "Take your Vitameatavegemin™ or I keel you!"

...on the other hand, the real Lucille Ball was instrumental in getting the original Star Trek to the small screen.  As head of Desilu studios she supported Gene Roddenberry's idea, using her position as chairperson to override the rest of the board's decision to cancel the then ambitious (and expensive) series before it ever aired in 1966 even though NBC decided to order the first season worth of episodes.

So thank a former "ditzy redhead" for giving us one of television's most iconic and enduring series.

Arness and Ball were great TV pioneers, reruns of I Love Lucy still running on our TV :)

OMG, I worked on that stopped up sink for hours.  It's almost 4 in the morning and I can't go to sleep.

What got into me?  I took all the pipes loose under the sink and found a leak.  My mama's snake won't work.

The plumber couldn't come Saturday because I got sick.  Now I'm too mad to call again.  Damn that sink, damn it three times over.

Five and a half bottles of Drano, right down that sink.  And none of it got anywhere near a clog.

I can't figure out which emoticon would fit this situation.

Too much blue, or not enough green, is there a headlight on the camera that needs turning off? Use the colour of the light from some emissive geometry to adjust skin tones, high K's are blue-er K's, say 10000K. Lower Ks are orangy-er K's, say 2900K or if you can[t adjust the Ks use the colour of a matte surface instead. eta make sure any "white point" setting is whatever Studio defailts to :0

Non-complaint:  It's been exactly two months since I cancelled my DISH-TV.  I don't even have an antenna so all I get for TV is NetFlix and NetFlix DVD.  What I've noticed is an increase in my peace and quiet and lack of random noise in the background.  No commercials!  Nobody screaming "0% Financing", no "full story at 11", no drug hawkers trying to convince me that I should buy their product despite the over-clocked disclaimer that essentially says "taking this might make you dead".

Occasionaly I feel that I need to catch up on news (although I don't know why) and I log into a website to see if the world has ended yet.  The static ads are an irritant but the articles are usually sufficient to allay my fears (or stoke them). However, when I click on a video, every freakin' one of them is preceded by a loud fast advertisement assaulting my calmness, and I'm thrust back into the screaming world of 0% financing.  I tend to believe that one of their purposes is to numb us to the news that will follow.

But that said, since having abandoned DISH-TV I've discovered a whole new world of commercial free drama, mysteries, comedies, bad cartoons and old long dead shows, that I can search through to find something viewable.  Yes, many of them are pure crap.  But when I find a gem and especially a series of gems like "Doc Martin", "Vera", "Wallander", to name just a few I add it to NetFlix's "MyList" which has now grown long enough to last me through the winter.  Some of those shows were originally on the high price networks like HBO or STARS or SHOTIME.  A lot of them were on the BBC-America that I had to pay extra to DISH to get their 200+ selection.  The biggest advantage of this type of viewing is that you can watch the series in order, from the beginning, on demand if you have adequate Internet service.  I can go back and find old episodes of my favorite shows that I know I missed 20 years ago.  It's a virtual smorgasboard of TV.

I'd had enough.  I couldn't afford $100/month so bye-bye DISH-TV.  I'm already paying for adequate Internet service so the extra cost of the combination of NetFlix and NetFlix-DVD is only about $20/month.  I save $80/month and I have peace and quiet in my home without continual blathering in the background.  The TV runs only when I am sitting in front of it and nobody is telling me to buy anything.  And when I tell you that I also listen to the Buffalo classical radio station "WNED" (via internet) http://tunein.com/radio/Classical-945-s21414/ that is essentially commercial free, you can understand that my brain has been de-commercialized and I didn't even go through any prolonged period of withdrawal symptoms. smiley
