After watching the video tutorials, I have focused my attempt on the colors blending, so the rendering is not at 100%.

On Kara Hair I used Deep Red Base, Four layers in the Color Mixer: Black layer in the middle zone, Red brown layer on tips, Mask025 Ginger for strands, then the dark roots layer.

That's a nice effect! :-)  Is that "reverse ombre?"  I saw a picture with light chunked roots and dark tips and tried to mimic that.

I didn't know ombre was dark roots and light tips.  Shows how much I know about coloring hair.

    Thanks @Khory blush

    Thanks @Jan19 wink

Yes Its all in reverse mode! I used the "reverse" method I tried to think like a hairdresser laugh, but i'm not, thinking about how he would do that color transition work, called balayage or ombres. Also my sister is an hairdresser and hair stylist, and recently she has brought three of hair shade levels (her blonde base, pale pink, lilac-pointed) and fake dark roots, so I had the basic idea and tried to recreate it with other shades.

Kara hair model is divided into several parts so I thought about doing the same color transition for all parts, then I used a bright color, that started from the roots, only for the thin part.
    I think I'll enjoy forever.

Taozen... I used Shandi Hair, just as you did, and applied two of the new Shine presets (one is a Max Shine for light hair, the other a Max Shine for dark hair) just to show how I addressed the concerns about adding more shine to the hair.  I added four new presets altogether, and they are in testing at Daz as we speak so hopefully they will be in everyones updates soon.

    This is sort of addictive.

Goldtassel did ombre better than I ever could, but this is a long hair that I thought might work better.  Getting the idea.  Layer after layer after layer, and so on and so forth. :-)  I think I should've scooted the masks up some.

That looks wonderful, Jan19!  That is definitely the way I hoped it would work for people :)  And yes, Goldtassel did a great job with her ombres.  She saw the green ombre I did on the promo with the fairy (before she knew about UHT2) and asked me how I did that.  I sent her a copy :P

Not wanting to miss the party, here's my first go with UHT2. Willow from Mihrelle w/ OOT's Sapphire Hair. Six or seven masks with reasonably compatible shades.

No postwork. Stopped at 72% conversion before I ran out of time (2 hours).

Yikes!  2 Hours?  I'm guessing you are rendering on CPU, then?  At any rate, it looks good.  And it kind of makes me giggle that you used it on OOT hair, considering he/she has a similar product to UHT(1) at another marketplace.  Not trying to be mean, it just does :P

Thanks for the reply and explanation. :-)  Balayage.  I like that word.  Working with UHT2 has give me a whole new respect for hair dressers.

Well, good, I was beginning to feel like a complete failure. laugh  Just kidding, thank you very much.  The ombre video does show things that I wasn't doing before.

Yes, Goldtassel does great hair, I I really like the Mada ombre colors.  Nice of you to send her UHT2!

Rendering on a GTX780. Render quality 2 @ 2000x3000. Loads the 780 to 2234 MB. While I have a fair bit of, and like OOT's products, I haven't used the OOT Iray Hair shaders since UHT1 was available. Don't giggle too much though, until UHT2, I alternated between UHT1 and IDG's Iray Hair essentials depending on the hair I used and the looks I wanted smiley.

There are shine presets in the utilities folder. There are 4 levels as I recall. Also, Saiyaness suggested lowering the bump or normal values to get more shine. Lighting also makes a *huge* difference.

    EDIT:

OK, lights corrected now and this time I set Normal Map to 0. It actually does make quite a difference, the questions is at what cost, if any? I also changed Cutout from default to 4, not sure how much that has influenced on the result.

Hm, now I look at them it looks like the light settings on the new one are different. I haven't changed them, just loaded the saved scene, so I wonder what happened here. Are the iRay settings not saved with the scene?

I actually came here to ask if this product was compatable with the "HDRI Optimized Skin and Hair Shaders", but see that you have it listed. Did you use the shaders from the HDRI product on the hair or just the skin? I was wondering if it's compatable with the hair textures and colors with this product.

  • ANGELREAPER1972ANGELREAPER1972 Posts: 4,555

didn't use the hair shaders in that product this time around just Slosh's but I'll give it a try but used the skin and teeth shaders yes

  • SloshSlosh Posts: 2,391

I don't have the HDRI Optimized Skin and Hair Shader, myself, so I'm afraid I can't answer that.  By what I read in the description, however, I think it might be.  If it is simply a shader that adjust the shine on hair, then maybe it will work with UHT2, but if it involves replacing textures it might now work "with" UHT2 so much as "instead of" UHT2.  If anyone who has both is willing to share your thoughts and impressions of using them together, please do so here.  I'm curious, myself.

I noticed some real render time impacts when playing with this in an empty scene with just G3F and a hair.  Should render reasonable fast even on my meager system with low render quality settings but it was taking a long time to converge.  I think it was the backscatter, I turned that off and it improved the time but it did change the look of the hair.  A tradeoff I guess.

  • SloshSlosh Posts: 2,391

hmm... I didn't use back scatter settings in UHT2... or were you referring to UHT1 or the HDRI hair product?

  • grinch2901grinch2901 Posts: 1,247

Oops, it was UHT2 Scatter On/Off, not backscatter.  I guess thats driving transluscency scatter / transmit? I don't know.  I was experimenting with the settings and that seemed to help me.

I played around with the color mixer a bit and re-rendered the image I posted earlier. I added just a touch of brunette to break up the black a bit and add more definition to the hair, I also turned down the shine a notch, and added a touch of sss. The differences are very very very subtle, but they are different. I like this "new" hair better than the first one.

I actually want to reach out and touch her hair and see if its as soft and smooth as it looks.

Thanks! Of course 90% of the credit goes to Slosh for the great plugin. Except for the addition of the sss, I just used to tools provided by the pligin.
