    (Late Feb. 2016)

Oh-oh, I seem to have stumbled onto something... again. I like canoeing so I tried to download the current freebie... SURPRISE! Something called "DAZ Connect" was mentioned on the download page... I have DS 4.8 installed so I ignored it. SURPRISE #2!!! The canoe files are not present on the D/L page, only the templates.

Office said the canoes are "DAZ Connect" only. No hyperlink to explain that exactly or to indicate this was a new product or an important new concept. Ok, so I was swift enough to go to the Commons forum page and sure enough, there's the FAQ and, a bit further down, ahhh... the hot discussion.

My two cents: Metric or imperial, QWERTY or ASK, tiny fonts or ZoomText, DRM or GNU - in the case of digital models, I bet a lot of people make their choices based on a quick visual. It's nice to be able to support artists and to show your feelings with either your wallet or your feet but I daresay this is getting waaaaaay too complicated. IT'S JUST A CANOE for Pete's sake!!! WE KNOW that if we want to float it down Andrej's forest stream we're going to have to pay. Sell more lakes and rivers later on if you want, but let DS 4.8 people at least have a go at the basic model.

"Free" should be <BLINK> FREE </BLINK> and if you want you may put a hyperlink or small JPEG in the zip file to advertise your other wares or some new direction... it's not a good idea to make your customers have to keep jumping through hoops to get to their desired results.

A year? I've clearly missed some news items..

Well a bob is now the smallest coin of the realm (in size if not value, but even then there's not much you can buy for 5p) so I wouldn't worry about it too much. I don't know about gerbils, but 500 quid (a quid being another word for a pound, which I also forgot to mention) is known as a "monkey" in certain circles, and £25 is a pony.

Given that there appears to be no way to upgrade to 4.9 *without* agreeing to DAZ Connect -- because you *can't* simply download the upgrade from your product library and install it yourself

Yes, I discovered that once there was a full release (not beta) the installers were downloadable. So that problem, at least, went away.

Don't know what the person who is naming the thread is thinking. No, the Wash Down freebie isn't encrypted. It isn't Friday. So far, only the *Friday* freebies are encrypted.

  • KeryaKerya Posts: 10,943

That person is me and I was "complaining" about encrypted Freebies.

Then I changed the title when the first unencrypted freebie showed up (it does not matter to me that it is not Friday, it is a freebie for everybody).

Now I changed the title because the second freebie Canoes is only encrypted for one year ...

  • ChoholeChohole Posts: 33,604

But JOdel is correct that washdown is the weekly freebie, which, so far, has been unencrypted. The Friday freebies were extra freebies, given in response to some non PC members asking for true freebies to test connect on, not freebies which needed a purchase in order to get them.

  • KeryaKerya Posts: 10,943

Well - usually the weekly freebie is "with purchase only", so there is that change too ... the world of freebies is in turmoil! LOL

OK, what would you like as thread title?

How do you SAY the date?

Nobody starts with the year...so how is that 'rational'?

Because it sorts correctly in an alpha sort.

    CoolScene-2016-02-14.duf

    CoolScene-2016-02-15.duf

That's why YYYY-MM-DD is the ISO standard, and not MM-DD-YYYY or DD-MM-YYYY. Dashes, not periods or commas.

If you say February 5th, then writing it 02/05/2016 makes perfect sense.

Just like, if you say it's the 5th of February, 05 02 2016 makes sense.

That last format never makes sense.

Japan uses year month day (biggest to smallest) The last format is smallest to biggest which makes much more sense than randomly arranging them.

Well, until you can change the mind of everybody in the US, you're going to see a lot of dates of the form MM/DD/YY.  And until you change the mind of everybody in some other countries of changing numbers like 27,3 into 27.3 you're going to see that silly logic also.  It is the way it is.  Learn and adapt! enlightened  If the US government couldn't convince their own people to change over to the metric measuring system from that outmoded English system, or get rid of the stupid penny coin, or change to dollar coins instead of dollar bills what chance is there that the unwashed masses will see the logic in how the date is written. surprise   And besides as mentioned in an earlier post (but incorrectly I think) if one's culture is in the habit of saying "Today is February eighteenth" the date form MM/DD/YY is not a random arrangement but makes perfect sense.

Personally I use the MM/DD/YYYY form for formal or informal correspondence but use the YYYYMMDD form only when labeling things that have a possibility of being sorted alphanumerically by computer.  Makes perfect sense to me.

And if the argument is that DAZ should use YYYY-MM-DD because they trade internationally, it's up to them to decide which cultural group they think are more able to adapt. devil

However if you really want to get me going, ask me if I'm going to adapt to how the word "ask" is pronounced by some. angry

Friday again and another encrypted "freebie". I guess the encryption testers can't make their minds up - or could it be a form of enticement to toe the line with Connect and Encryption?

Nope - they are probably testing the waters with the encrypted for a year thing, I think.

I am now putting them in my cart and check out and will download with DIM in a year. *grin*

When I was a kid, pocket money was half a crown (2/6d "two and six"), twelve-and-a-half pee in modern money. A quid was also known as a "knicker" (knickers are BrE for panties), so 2 quid was "a pair of knickers" (and the old joke, "Can a lady with a wooden leg change a pound note? No, because she's only got half a knicker!")

Bring back the groat (= 4 old pennies) I say!

Another encrypted freebie I can't use / don't need! Sigh.

  • I may bite on this one, but if I need a bed, that bundle with one in it will be more useful now, since I don't plan to use Connect.

Friday Freebie "Cozy Bed" is available in DIM ... No encrypted file :)

On store page it says "Encrypted DAZ Connect" only, but if you add it in your cart and process,
launch DIM and it's available to download. Works in DAZ Studio 4.8.

    * No link available to download the unencrypted file in "Manual" mode in Product Library !

They must have read your post becuase they seem to have closed that loophole now. It does not appear in DIM for me.

EDIT: My mistake - yes it does appear in DIM. I didn't spot it at first.

Ehm ... but that one is not the PC freebie - the PC freebie this week is the unencrypted Wash down http://www.daz3d.com/wash-down

Just saying ... personally I was grandfathered until last August with the old PC rules and then let my PC membership expire, so I don't try to persuade you to stay a PC member.

I just don't want you to make your decision on a wrong assumption.

When I was in primary school a lot of the time we spent on arithmetic was about dealing with pounds shillings and pence, feet and inches, pounds and ounces etc. I wonder what they find to do now? But this sort of thing does prepare you a bit for dealing with other number systems like binary, octal and hex.

I've always thought that the reason schools teach multipication tables up to twelve was because of the 12 pence in a shilling and 12 inches in a foot, For ordinary multiplication you really only need to go up to 10.

Cozy Bed rendered in DS 4.8, works just fine. I assume they will eventually stop making the same mistake, but of the 6 DAZ Connect Only freebies I have picked up so far, I got 3 through DIM.

Apparently the French once tried to introduce metric time, but everyone ignored them and it was quickly dropped.

The odd thing is that when time units are smaller than seconds, or larger than years, we go straight into metric (millisecond, decade, century, etc.)

Picking up the bed, free, so I can use it in a year. ;)

Nicstt: It's not a PC+. Currently, encrypted products don't have any direct bearing on PC membership (except for diffuse issues like 'I don't want Daz to be going to DRM')

Yeh so I realise. TY for pointing out much more politely than a Daz representative.

I donno if it was a mistake or not but the cozy bed is showing in my dimm as unencrypted . just thought i let someone know if this was not intended

  • MelanieLMelanieL Posts: 7,712

Looks like that was fixed - I just picked it up but it's not in my DIM (nor Product Library except as an offline download package) - I guess I was too slow! Ah well, only 366 days to go...

  • hphoenixhphoenix Posts: 1,335

And thus the early birds who aren't already at work get an unencrypted DIM file, while those of us who can't get to our DIM machines remain locked out.  And the pirates get another one to release easy.

So even though I "purchased" the make a wish and canoe freebies, I can't download them unless I download DS4.9?

Huh, well, that's not gonna happen.  So I guess I have purchased 2 freebies I'll never be able to dl.  C'est la vie.

You can dowload them in 1 year, so it is not quite never.

And ditto for the nice bed I just "purchased"  A year from now I can have my freebies?  Wow, that's as bad as a 'non-compete' clause.

Now we have a 'non-usable freebie' clause because some of us won't dl 4.9.  Freebies will only be valid for use 1 year from the date of purchase.  It's like an investment in my future.  Right. frown
