Just a minor clariffication - when I said vendors, I was talking in general as to companies that sell to the customers like DAZ, Steam, EA, etc. I know that some PAs may want this and some may not. That is their call, and I was not commenting on them, just companies in general.
I think whenever DAZ gets the Metadata properly done for all the products and perhaps DAZ or a 3rd party comes up with a simpler way to make metadata for other items (even a set of templates would be an improvement...) then Smart Content will really shine. Right now, the official metadata has issues, such as Lost and Found items. Compatibilities issues that while fixable by unchecking the context box, are still issues. But these are easily smoothed out with proper data entry. (Pity I couldn't get a job at DAZ making metadata, carefully going over compatibilities and categorizations to make sure each item is where it should be and that it pulls up only what it should pull up. Maybe I'm odd, but that sounds like it'd be a fun job. Though I suppose eventually, everything would be categorized except new items being made and the people making those would likely handle their own metadata...)
The mind boggles
I appreciate all freebies from Daz. Thanks for an extra unexpected one.
HAHAHA love the image barbult...that is too funny! :)
Daz has already said they do not intend to work on compatibility with Carrara.
Of course, they could change their minds, but I wouldn't expect anything even Daz soon.
For those who are enjoying the freebie, I am glad you are enjoying it! We had a ton of fun creating that set.
For those who are upset it is encrypted only and so will not be trying it out, we completely respect that decision and are sorry if you are unhappy with us as a result.
(Though honestly when freebies are released and how is not under our control)
I do feel however that giving something for free for people to try out the system for themselves (rather than taking anyone else's opinion of it one way or another) is a good idea though, and am glad to see the set will give people that opportunity (for those who want it)
It's rational in that for both date alone (YYYY.MM.DD) and date+time (YYYY.MM.DD HH:MM:SS), it goes strictly from largest unit of time to smallest. It also makes it trivially easy to order things by date.
As for "Nobody starts with the year", tell that to the Chinese.
That would not be an issue. Imperial measures of length can be converted to metric with absolute precision. One inch is, by definition, exactly 25.4 millimeters, and all other units follow from that.
Thanks jcade - consider my words eaten!! Not to bad with BBQ sauce either.
Talk about ..... welll ... DUH
Thank you for the lovely freebie and all the hard work you put into it.
I agree that as an extra freebie it is a nice idea for people to try it out and I would love to have it.. But, while I'm not dead set against encryptation, sadly, I can't use it now because I'm not yet in a good position to upgrade to DS 4.9. Then again this is not much different than say a Poser or Crrara user not being able to utilize some freebies because they don't use IRAY or Genesis 3 And since it is free I may decide to purchase it just in case I may be able to someday use it.

Imperial measurement? My last property still had the deed written in rods and chains.
Mine says "1, 2, another, another, another"
Where?
Thanks for your hard work! Though I'm not happy with connect or encrypted only (not your fault), your stuff is definitely a good choice as a "test" freebie, because it is always so well done.
Oh, it's very possible, I think a few people here on the forums have done it... by editing the metadata.
FWIW, this is another in my top ten reasons not to use some of the newer bells and whistles; not entirely because I don't like them (although I'll readily admit that is part of it), but mainly because I have no use for them. They don't fit the way I've worked in D|S for many years, since long before the new features were even a scribbled note on a napkin, or an evil twinkle in a programmer's eye.
Hi,
I just ordered the new freebee "Make a Wish Props".
But I still have 4.8 due to the well known security incompatibilities. Now that freebee is only installable by Conect.
I like to use it in 4.8 - how to ??
I can't switch to 4.9
Rub the lamp and make a wish that the encryption is removed?
But you can't rub the lamp until you have installed it....
Forget I ever said anything, you didn't see me. I was never here.
Well, if they said "we have no plans" you might see a new Carrara next week.
...suddenly, stores worldwide are bought out of A1 and HP sauce.
Sorry to say, without 4.9 you can't use it. You could make it usable in 4.8 if you had 4.9 (nstalling the 4.9 beta would allow you to to have both 4.8 and 4.9 on your system), you could export the items (collada or obj), then re-import into 4.8. Unfortunately there is no way to use it directly in 4.8
I appreciate the freebie. The freebie nudged me to install Daz Studio 4.9 just to try out encryption, the embedded store, and the installation process. As I expected, it was about as useful as the "content paradise" tab in Poser, which means not useful at all to the program user - me. I think that when I use Studio 4.9, I will be working in the "offline" option and won't be using the embedded store. I will generally avoid encryption only products but if something really catches my eye, I might make an exception.
Thank you, Daz, for letting me try it out for free.
EDIT: the props set is a fine addition to be combined with Slosh's genie product.
FInished up my tests, asked to have it removed. It's a lovely set, and hopefully it'll be around in an unencrypted form someday.
The thing which worries me about these installation methods is that I don't want to mess up my DS 4.8 content database. I fear that installing DS 4.9 side-by-side with 4.8 might cause the two databases to screw each other up, or the 4.9 database to delete and and replace the 4.8 one. I worry that I would end up not being able to access my 4.8 content anymore. I continue to download content manually and place it in the folders where both I and the software can most easily find it. That way I can use content from Smith Micro, Renderosity, ShareCG etc. alongside of stuff from DS store and also use Daz items from the old Daz freebie site and things from old computer magazine coverdiscs. If I ever set up 4.9 it may need to be on a different computer so as not to mess up all the content I already have. I also use Carrara and Bryce a lot so there's that complication too.
BTW: Date format, if we wanted it to be rational, would be like ducks flying up a wall: small, medium, large (days, months, years).
Hi,
I just purchased the currently free "Have a Wish Props".
Now I saw, they have to be installed using Connect only.
But I only have DAZ4.8. I can't run 4.9 due to the very well known security incompatibilities.
So how to download and install it?
you can't. It's for DS 4.9 only
It isn't security incompatabilities...ALL the other AV/Security software providers have no problem with the #2 database software on the planet. Only one company has a 7 plus yr problem with it...you figure out what is going on.
But isn't it futile:
free <-> strict protection ?
Oh you mean how we do it here in the UK
The 4.9 database uses different tables than the 4.8 database -- the only thing they share is the list of categories, so as long as you don't delete a category in 4.9 it won't mess up the 4.8 database.
As for content not installed with Connect, it reads it the same way as 4.8 did, just make sure you have the content locations mapped in Content Directory Manager.
