That and I don't want clutter in my product library that I'm never going to use.

....and, since it's free, all the pirates can download it easily to work on cracking the encryption.

.....though, to be honest, it doesn't look like any of the items in the package require bones/weighting, so a simple export/import/save would probably work for this one.

Another one I'd like, but won't buy since it's Encrypted-Connect-Only.....

(And to all the ones having to file support tickets for returns.....From now on, don't check out without checking EVERY item in  your cart.  You know the old adage, "Fool me once, shame on me.  Fool me twice....")

Oh, I see. Okay, that explains it. :) Thanks for the clarification.

Not just the pirates. Some of us like to poke at ways to circumvent just so they can be reported to developers. I may dislike the DRM, but they might as well have theirs working as best as it can before it's deemed a failure. Spares us some of the dragging on from someone hellbent on DRM just saying the current one wasn't strong enough. Plus just trying to find all the ways that encrypted content can go wrong in 4.9...  And when I'm done, I'll drop in my return ticket to get the garbage out of my product library. (Garbage in terms of it being DRMd, the set itself seems ok, ArtCollab does solid work. Sad thing is, this set was probably like the tollbooth with poser files and everything before being hobbled to be used as a test for DRM)

Hphoenix: Yeah. That's part of my annoyance.

For a year now I've been trained to immediately hoover up all the freebies that appear. Now I have to change my habits.

Such negativity.  I will admit that I don't like DRM/encryption, but I can understand vendors (any type) wanting to try it.  I do my best to be an honest person.  I do not steal,  I try not to lie, and I like to try to give the benefit of a doubt.  That said, there have been numerous freebies offered on this site that have required products that I do not currently own and that are free for a limited amount of time.  Because I like the way the free product looks, I purchase it with plans to someday purchase the required product.  They are still loitering in my DIM waiting for me to make my millions and buy everything I want.  My point?  I like the way this product looks, I LOVE the products put out by the PA.   I have not (yet) downloaded, let alone installed, 4.9.  But I still made my purchase.  I politely vocalize my dislike but understanding of the situation, but I acknowledge that changes happen that I may not like, but that won't kill me.  This is one of them.   I appreciate DAZ offering this FREE item to test out customer response to this whole DAZ Connect situation.  So wonderful item purchased.  Will it be downloaded?  Someday probably, but not today.

    This

Plus I would see it in my account, then go to DIM, and ???, and then post a forum message asking about it, read why, then get aggravated, probably post a few more complaints, then submit a ticket, have to check on that, and so on, and so on, and so on, and so on, and so on...  (...see Heather Locklear, Faberge Organic Shampoo cheeky)

I don't know if any vendors actually wanted to try this. There is no indication this was their idea, beyond 'we are annoyed at the piracy.'

  • I won't buy it for the same not supporting DRM comments...

But even more in my mind is not having any of the DRM content in my runtime because I am worried about potentially getting locked out of everything. I already had issues with DAZ Connect that have been resolved, so I am worried that introducing a new variable will cause those issues to re-manifest.

The previous issues did not lock me from my other items, but the potential is still there and has made me nervous enough to be extremely cautious.

Offer ends Thursday 02.11.16, 11:59 PM, MST (-7 UTC)

2nd of November 2016 is a Wednesday. So what got screwed up, day of the week, month or the day number? Also, seriously, they make a freebie for more than half a year? Why? If it's free for so long, why not just make it permanent?

You both really ought to switch to the rational date format: 2016.02.11. cheeky

How do you SAY the date?

Nobody starts with the year...so how is that 'rational'?

If you say February 5th, then writing it 02/05/2016 makes perfect sense.

Just like, if you say it's the 5th of February, 05 02 2016 makes sense.

Like the United States should switch to the rational system of measurements that everyone else is using...

At least Studio does use metric system units. :)

Interesting aside. I have a friend who has done assaying and informed me that one big obstacle to going metric would be that you'd have to re-survey EVERY SINGLE plot of land in the US. That would be... formidable, particularly since you have issues like something being defined as a precise distance in Imperial, and then... well, do you round when converting? Are people going to insist you round one way vs another? Some of these deeds go back 100+ years.

Add to that, there are a lot of crazies out there who will literally shoot surveyers on their land.

    How about a simple Feb. 11, 2016.................................. ?

  • Well, the existence of the freebie is kinda pointless if I can't get Connect to update itself with today's purchases. DIM shows what I got other than this one item, Connect won't show any of it, even after using Updata Metadata, shutdown and restart, and just logoff and login again.

  • I appreciate the vendor making available an interesting product, and DAZ making it free.

But......................... very big "but"................... I really can't accept as it is encrypted.

No, he said they shoot surveyors.  Not sure who they are shooting them at, but that would require a BIG GUN.  wink

  • It's is a nice try to fishing people with free content for encrypted content. Thanks, but this time the freebie will stay for me in the store. If you want to give us a freebie for all, then please really for all. or make your annoucement clearer.

Once again, Poser users have no chance to use the items. So, if a poser user gets this newsletter and want download the announced freebie he will be once again dissapointed. But I think that nobody here at DAZ really interest in it. Without that Poser-Users DAZ wouldn't be, where they are now. You should never forget those who bring you on top, they could als make you fall deep.

"you'd have to re-survey EVERY SINGLE plot of land in the US"

I think that may be a bit of fear mongering, Will. I can tell you that when we up here in Canada switched to the metric system there were plenty of people who predicted a myriad of problems would arise. Although the switch was not painless, most problems were associated with people who had difficulty adjusting to the new system psychologically. Many had difficulty learning to think in metric, rather than the British system of measurement which they had known all their lives. When the change was first being debated, those opposed spent a great deal of effort inventing potential problems as a way of preventing the plans from going ahead, whether those problems were real or not. For the younger generations, now adults, they have had no problems and almost everyone has become accustomed to metres, centimetres, kiolmetres, litres, etc. Oh, and we, too, have land titles dating back at least as long as you folks in the US, and I am unaware of any particular problems associated with that. We certainly did not resurvey every parcel of land in the country due to the adoption of the metric system, nor were the historical documents altered. So there is certainly some solution to that available. Can't say that I know how it was handled specifically, but it was, and the fact that it has never been a big issue suggests that it wasn't that difficult. Just a little math, I suspect.

There are costs associated with such a switch, of course. You need to change such things as weight scales, automotive odometers/speedomeyers (and signage), gas pumps, measuring tapes and rulers, etc. But these changes were implemented over time, often on the basis of attrition and according to need.

Do surveyers routinely get shot at in Canada?

I mean, we're AMERICUH. We do crazy violent.

Maybe this is wrong, but it's what someone who had actually had field experience told me.

Thanks DAZ!! I was one of those that wanted a true free product to test connect encrypted content

So far I have only downloaded the Make a Wish Props, and set them up in the Content Library tab. I've got to say though, I'm not impressed. the download was rather slow (just noting it, not a deal killer), and setting them up in the Content Library was a real PITA (not difficult, but time consuming).

I'm one of those who don't use smart content  ..... well ..... hardly ever. Mostly because smart content isn't that smart (or maybe I'm just no smart enough to use it). For example, I load a G3F character, then I want to put some cloths on her. Hmmm, in smart content I only get the clothes that are made for G3F (only 10 icons show up in wardrobe, because I haven't bought much for G3F due to Carrara incompatibility), none of the other clothes for Genesis 2, or Genesis that will work perfectly fine on her show up. So ....... why waste my time looking for stuff in the Smart Content tab, when it shows only a small portion of the products that are compatible with the item I have selected.  I do realize that for new users, and for increased sales, smart content is great. But for us old farts that like to get as much mileage as possible out of ALL of our stuff, Smart Content is just stupid (unless I'm just stupid, which if so, please show me the proper way to find everything you might want to use with a figure smartly in smart content ..... without editing the metadata).

If I'm wrong about smart content, I will gladly eat my words. (This sounds impressive, bit is actually much easier now, compared to 40 years ago, where my words would have been on paper, and required a great deal of chewing, and a glass or two of liquids on hand to complete the task. Now, since everything is electronic, in the "virtual world", it only requires virtually "eating" a few virtual bits and bytes and I'm done.)

I'll need to test things a bit more (exporting to Carrara, etc.) before the final verdict. But so far, it looks like Connect only, and Connect Encrypted only content provides much less overall value for me than I had expected, even if the intended use isn't in Carrara.

Thanks again for providing the free test content, Hopefully we will also get a free character and some clothing to test as well.

  • DAZ, playing the role of Jafar, don't you know the rules?  Not even genie magic can make us love DRM.

If you unclick "filter by context" at the bottom smart content will show everything rather than just stuff that is designed to go with a certain object. I

and yeah, I had to have that pointed out to me too.

If you do a lot of cararra-ing then yeah the encrypted content is currently lower value to you, no argument there. Hopefully daz gets on that.
