The world's first fully synthetic plastic was invented in 1907 by Leo Baekeland, who coined the term plastics. Since then plastics have taken over the world, especially once mass manufacturing became much cheaper around the 1950's and 60's.
Plastics are cheap, colourful, and versatile. Everything can be made of plastic: furniture, clothes, wigs, household objects, toys, medical equipment, computers. We achieve huge advances in technology and science as we use plastics to fly to the moon and connect the entire world through the internet. Life in plastic, it's fantastic!
Or is it, really? Looking at the environmental and health impact of plastics, they definitely have their dark side. Is recycling really the solution, or is it just green-washing? Does "plastic" automatically mean "cheap and disposable", or can plastics bring value to our lives? For better and for worse, plastics are all around us (and they may or may not be lead by Regina George.) The theme of August is: Plastique Fantastique!

Title: GRP, the plastic fantastic.
In the 1950's to 1980's, glass reinforced plastic was the wonder material. You could make boats from it that never rotted or rusted. Plastic Fantastic. You could make sailplanes that had glide angles of 1 in 60, twice as good as the best gliders before this made from canvas, steel and wood. Plastic Fantastic. Then a manufacturer in the UK made a car for the people from it, the 3 wheeled Reliant Robin exploiting a legal loophole that treated 3wheel cars as motorcycles with sidecars.. I had one. From bitter experience I called it a 'Plastic Pig'.
The flagship motoring programme of the BBC tried to launch a Robin into space. Best place for it. Anyway, the scene includes a boat and glider while someone recklessly fires a plastic pig towards space with little thought to those who may be affected.
The houseboat, glider, Reliant Robin Space Vehicle and rocket flames are all converted to obj and then DS formats from freebie 3d printing STL files. It's taken time. There are no fancy texture maps, the different colours are different material zones mostly set up in my home written modeller.

Oh my goodness I have fought with this render for almost 2 weeks!!! Barely slipping it in on time.
Doll Drama
“Fashion Dolls” (Barbies) were always a big hit with all the girls I knew when I was a kid. We loved them, made clothes for them, did their hair, and carried them back and forth between each other’s houses. I’m pretty sure that was the vision that the toy companies had when they designed them. But when it came to actually playing with them, mine almost never had fashion shows or went on cute little dates or any of the stuff that it looked like kids were playing in the commercials and such. No, for me and my friends, we combined our dolls and their stuff with toy dinosaurs, plushie tigers, action figure playsets (sometimes borrowed from brothers or cousins lol), and things like that. My dolls, for instance, only dated GI Joes, and some 12 inch Batman and Iron Man dolls(?)/action figures that I found at a garage sale. They were sometimes armed with tiny little swords, as well, so that they could properly defend themselves if GI Joe wasn’t around.
So here is my tribute to the crazy lives of fashion dolls!

Fae, that's nostalgic. I didn't have fashion dolls, but my brother and I played with a combination of dollhouse dolls, action figures, and whatever plastic toys we had that were anywhere near the same scale as them. Had a whole storyline and conflict going on with bad guys.
