Our ancient cat had what looked like a pretty rough fall off my chair, and since then he's been keeping his hind feet flat on the ground instead of on his toes. I suspect he's not long for this world.

I'm so sorry. May his passing be peaceful and cradled in love, and may your time remaining together be memorable in the best ways.
Not really. It's A.I., but I'm having a bit of a problem negotiating anything other than a tablet these days. 73 next month. Oof. Kinda like a punch in the gut. So here it is.

I am sorry to hear this news. It would be lovely if it turned out to just be bruised toes/claws but regardless the furball needs love and care and knows you are there for him.

Oh, no! Poor baby. It's been rough around here for cats lately.

And here is another AI ad to go with yours. Somehow I think it is related.

Yes, I hope it turns out to be a recoverable thing.
...But after I've tolerated 82F for a while it's time to close the windows, turn on the A/C and turn on a couple of fans around the house to try to push the A/C where it's needed.
Depending on angles, exterior wall locations, roof construction, and composition and whatnot, your walls (and ceiling, if you have no upstairs neighbors) could be all heated up by the time you decide to turn on the AC. And the walls are in turn releasing their heat both to the outdoors (as the evening air cools off) and to the indoors (because the indoors, even at 81 F, is probably still cooler than the heat in the walls).
At that point, your AirCon has to fight at least two of the laws of thermodynamics, and you are left with whatever efficiency your AirCon has in moving the heat out of your space.
I learned this a few years ago when I started making use of my HVAC's geo-fencing feature, to let the house warm up during the day (on days I was in the office) vs. having the HVAC run all day because I was home. The HVAC would have to run extra long in the evenings, and for at least the first 3 hours or so, it would struggle against the heat in the house. It used more power too, and that costed more money during the summer months. It was also a lot harder on the HVAC components; running it from 5 or 6 pm until nearly midnight when it would be able to go back to regular cycling again.
About 3 years ago, I went back to setting it to 79F and just letting it maintain that temp all day. Cost went back down, especially during the months of June, July, and August.
Interesting tidbit: When we get a thunderstorm or a good hard rain, I can open the windows at opposite sides of the house, and the breeze cools the house off a lot faster than the AirCon ever could.
My ex texted me last night/this morning to say that his hind legs had stopped working. When I woke up, she had wrapped a scarf around his pelvis and was using it to assist him in moving around. She got an appointment with the vet later in the day, and the decision was made to put him down. He is now in the freezer awaiting taxidermy.

@ Gordig: Sympathies for your old friend passing. 7 decades I've been telling my animal friends goodbye. When they leave me, I grieve, as we do. At some point though, as if by magic, a new little life will be running around the house and getting into trouble.
It doesn't help that I have a niece and a cousin that do pet rescue. But I am a willing victim.

With our Toby, he's really perky now and going to have a repair operation on 30 July once the surgeon is back from holiday. Until then he's confined to a medium size dog crate.
His pain killers have been scaled back & he's no longer on opioids, which makes us more comfortable about his treatment.
Toby sounds like a tough kitty, he will have time to have any swelling go down and drive everyone to distraction.
There are times when we cringe when we think we have to call a utility company over billing, today I had two. My primary electric/gas company and the solar energy company, who sent me a bill with a combined charge for both of them. I had paid my electric bill a number of days ago. Add to that, we have monsoon rain coming in and with it, migraines! But surprise, surprise, two folks on the phones who were not only helpful but pleasant and kind. I was able to get educated how this billing worked together and was able to adjust the one that would have double-billed me on the 31st. And they offered me the choice to let me pay my electric bill personally. Excellent.
And now the gardeners have arrived with the leaf blowers. Sigh.
I hope everyone has a cool day, if not, put on a You Tube video of bird baths splashing. It helps. Or if the mods don't mind, the American Test Kitchen has a You Tube Series on Cooking Techniques if you are interested?

Sorry for your loss Gordig... I'm not good at saying condolences, so I'm going to say something stupid instead and hope it distracts you.
I hope someone puts me in a freezer for taxidermy when I croak. Equally acceptable would be mummification... but like scary haunted mummy, mummification. If they taxidermy me (like I've numerously stated as my preferred post mortem state) I've requested to be posed in my old party persona getup which is wearing jeans and a tacky Hawaiian shirt, my pirate hat and eye patch with a poorly taxidermied parrot on my left shoulder and a pĩna colada in my right hand... and a beer bottle in my shirt pocket.
That probably didn't help, but if I croak soonly and they do stuff me, I'll have someone post the picture of me, which hopefully will be amusing by then... unless they go with the mummification thing in which case I want the Scooby Do scary mummy pose, which some people might not find that amusing... I mean it could work from a nostalgia angle, but technically if they do the whole ritual correctly I'll be reanimated and I can actually go around chasing meddling teenage sleuths.
I thought there was a 3D printing forum here, but my stupid brain lied to me like it did about those styrofoam peanuts being a good snack choice...
I got a Bambu Lab P1S (FDM) printer recently and I'm looking to get a resin printer for higher quality fine detail prints and I'm really annoyed that nobody out there (or probably it's just Google's crappy search results) has good pictures or descriptions of what the resolutions mean in comparison to real world objects... like the closest I found is an image of a figure next to a penny, but there is no explanation of the resolution... all the pictures show ambiguously sized prints next to each other (8k, 12k,16k) but without knowing the actual dimensions of the printed objects being shown it's kinda unhelpful... yeah I can see 16k is way more detailed than 8k or 4k, but is the figure shown 2 feet tall or 2 centimeters?
I'm aware of the concept in microns and lcd screen size and layer height, but visually what does that look like? And apparently lcd screen size, independent of "K" can make a difference in resolution and crispness... and apparently, apparently there are "high resolution" resins that can make a difference too...
My solution if I were writing an article would be to print a 3cm block or square plate with different (fine) point size raised letters (Ariel Regular font) on it and maybe some detailed sculpted relief of some sort on the surface too and photograph it next to a penny and a 5 cent euro coin and print it in several different resolutions. The lettering can exemplify clarity, detail and sharpness in a known format (points) and the coins a real world object that is familiar.
When I used to have to deal with clients when I was a model maker, I'd often have to give the client a real world example of material properties... like "the 1.35mm/.053 in. wall section is about as thick as a dime", "75-A is about the same durometer equivalent as a pencil eraser", "160,000 cps (centipoise) is about the same viscosity as peanut butter "... stuff like that. I worked with a few industrial designers who couldn't visualize what their own dimensions were like... and you'd have engineers who'd just be tossing out numbers and dimensions like popcorn to pigeons and the client would be baffled by all the nonsense flying around... but you'd give a good real world example and their brains would recalibrate and they'd suddenly have a reference point.
Too many people just say or write stuff without thinking if it makes sense to others or its helpful... (yes I realize the irony of that coming from a person who has frequently written about the international Ninja Space Hamster Peanut Butter Conspiracy... but then again I'm an irony wrapped in a conundrum stuffed with bacon)
Megh...
I hate trying to figure stuff out in this crappy useless timeline.
Pbfffffft!
And by the way... howdy folks... I hope everyone is well and doing as okay as this crappy timeline will allow.
Anyway... I'm gonna go finish off this bag of styrofoam peanuts before they go bad... see youse folks later.

My beloved departed splotchy kitty was convinced they were an EXCELLENT snack choice. For a while it was absolutely baffling because I kept catching him with them, but I couldn't figure out where on earth they were coming from. I finally found him raiding a stash from a forgotten box in the basement and looking extremely guilty when he was caught.
(I later learned that his first mama had given him the corn starch kind to play with as a kitten, although this was also the cat that would try to eat anything, whether it was edible or not.)
Thank you for that smile. I hadn't thought about that in ages.
non-complaint: Finally, a few days of reprieve from the heat! Getting to 90+ isn't unusual around here, it's just not usually so sustained. We actually set a record for third-longest run of 90+ degree days for the state... 10 days in a row. The two ahead of it were 14 (in the 1930's) and 11 (in the 1940's). Unfortunately, it's back to 90+ starting Saturday, but by then we should be on a schedule for dawn walks, so it matters less as far as keeping us cooped up.
