Linear keyframe interpolation seems very broken in Daz Studio 6.

Applying it or the way it behaves?

OK, still grapppling with DS6, as I hadn't understood that DS4 wasn't using the RTX 5070 card in the laptop I bought last year until I tried DS6 when the first main release came out and I was suddenly gettig scenes render in 6 minutes that took 50 min in DS4,  I had to step away for a few weeks, came back to it yesterday, decided to throw together a quick-and-dirty render of a G8F and G8M character interacting for fun before going back to finalising the characters to start a long series of renders telling a story ... and ran into a couple of problems I hadn't before. (Typically, I come here to write this only to find a new version has been released. But the changelog doesn't mention anything obviously - to me, anyway - relevant, so ...)

Unlike before my couple of weeks hiatus, DS6 is only doing every other render. By which I mean I load the scene, hit render, get the dialogue open and rapidlly scrolling list of updating this and that ... and then says it has finished after 40.16 seconds (according to the log) when nothing has appeared in the render window but which is now allowing a save even though there's nothing there!  But if i then hit render again, it renders the image - takes about an hour as it runs out of memory on the RTX card. Try to render again, scrolling list of retrieving and updating, claims it's finished with nothing in the render again; try to render again and it renders. And on and on. First try at a render, short time and claims it's finished with blank render window; second try and it actually renders. What the ...?

On my running out of graphics card memory, two quick questions from my ignorance:

1 In the Task Manager GPU performance display there's dedicated GPU memory (the RAM on the card) and Shared GPU memory - I take it the Shared memory doesn't count and the scene has to fit into the dedicated memory - right?

2 Given all the stuff in the environment I was using, I hid a lot of parts and props that were out of view. Does setting props etc to non-visible keep them from being loaded into the graphics memory for the render, or do I need to actually delete them?

    NVidia driver version?

AFAIK, it has to fit into the GPU memory.

I did a test a few years ago, and found that hidden geometry doesn't get loaded for rendering. But since it still gets loaded by DS, I occassionly delete them when it's time for the final render.

Current latest Studio driver (I haven't played computer games since going cold turkey giving them up in 1994) 610.62

I just don't understand the repeated every other render thing. I mean this is without changing a thing - quick blank render, full scene render, quick blank render, full scene render etc etc with me doing nothing but clicking the render button!

Check the log the next time you get a blank render and see if it gives any clues.

Already did after it happened. No clue I understand. Says the graphics memory ran out, but it says that both when it does the render of nothing and the render of the scene.

    - and on to render the image in about 1 hour as it's using the cpu. (Don't understand the part about the available GPU memory having increased, but that's after it's started rendering ouput into the render window)

Click to render again, nothing else done, repeat  of the first; click again and repeat of the second, again and again, whether I do nothing inbetween or tweak the scene a bit. This continues after me shutting down DS, then re-starting and re-loading the saved scene ... and after crashing, then me re-starting DS and re-loading the scene, or a new saved version after some tweaks. 1st render blank, 2nd rrender rendered scene, 3rd render blank, 4 the render rendered scene, and so on time after time.

I don't want to sound sarcastic. However, the message appears to be clear.

    You ran out of memory.

Believe me I'm afraid of getting this message myself. But then I have a very wimpy video card in a computer that is 6+ years old.

Eventually DAZ Studi 6 and iRay will abandon me entirely.

Could you check Render Settings - Hardware and see how it is configured. This is mine.

Well it's not clear to me, because it says it has run out of graphics memory on both odd and even numbered clicks to render, but while on the odd numbered renders it produces a blank image, every even numbered render it does render the scene - and it's the same scene each time.

I have both CPU and CUDA ticked as I thought the scene might be too bigfor the RTX's onboard RAM so it might need to fall back to the CPU. Hm. I have the default 20 for the CPU load limit -you have 32 ...

It's this alternating behaviour that just has me completely lost. It always failing I could understand and try to deal with; or always just doing a CPU render. But always giving a quick blank every odd numbered render but giving me an actual CPU render of the scene every even numbered render. That's just mad.

OK, this is now beyond mad.

So I changed the Render Hardware settinsg to untick the CPU in top two settings and clicked to render (still same scene). I presumed it would just fail, but it did start to render the scene slowly - I presume because I still have Allow CPU Fallback ticked down the bottom. That's not the mad bit. The mad bit is it slowly rendered iterations 1 to 8 ... and then the image in the render window coarsened back up, and it rendered iterations 1 to 8 again, and again, and again, just kept reaching iteration 8 and jumping back to iteration1 endlessly. (I have it set to finish at 1000 iterations.)

    What the actual ...

Did you restart DS after changing the CPU settings?

If you did restart DS, as Richard suggested, and it still happens, then you are running out of memory and it falls back to CPU when it reaches iteration 8. It then starts using the GPU memory, until it runs out of memory. The 5070 has 12 GB or 8 GB of VRAM, depending on the model.

Just out of interest, what is in your scene?

Just before seeing your post, I had just finshed not only re-starting DS, but shutting it down, then shutting down the laptop, waiting a bit, re-started laptop, started DS6. re-loaded the scene and hit render. It did what it did before, started endlessly rendering iteration 1 to 8, back to 1 and up to 8, back to 1 ...

I've changed the Hardware settings back to how they were before with the top two CPU options ticked as well as GPU, hit render, it rendered a couple of iterations, then said it had finished. Hit render again, got the blank render supposedly finished, and again and I'm up to iteration 16 and grinding slowly on. So I appear to be back to the odd number renders quick blank (when i say blank, it's just all transparent), even numbers renders the scene slowly CPU renders.

    Aaaaargh.

I know I don't understand the later DS 4s and Iray rendering the way I used to DS 0.9, 1, 2, 3 and early four always with 3Delight, and I don't understand thge generation 8 and especially 9 figures the way i understood the first 4 generation figures and reasonably the 5th and 6th. I've also forgotten most of what i used to know amd also don't think clearly inmy medicated brain fog, keep forgetting what I've just done, and expect to run into problems and struggle to understand. But THIS behaviour is just crazy to me - I haven't any idea where to start with it. And it wasn't doing any of this before the couple of weeks hiatus.

I think I'll just install the new Beta, and see if this craziness stops and it appears to be vaguely comprehensible again.

When i re-started with DS but the 4.24, I was producing a sequence of 50 or 60 images telling one incident in a story with one morphed HD G8F, one morphed HD G8M, hair, clothes, interior of a beech condo set from here with a Spanish beach HDR both light and visible dome through the floor length windows and open glass door at one end, and and some xtra props and extra mostly 'ghost' lights inside.

When I started with DS6 when the first supposedly non-beta came out, I initially was re-rendering some of the same scenes for comparison and to understand DS6 a bit, especially I was getting 6 mminute renders in DS6 that had taken 50 minutes in DS4, not having understood that DS424 wasn'r using the RTX 5070 card whereas DS 6 does. Then I switched to just working up more refined versions of characters for the next part of the story, so was just rendering one G8F and no background. Note: that with the ones of the scene as described above there was no memory problem, no weirdness, and it was doing GPU renders.

After a hiatus of a few weeks, before going back to the story set up, and what i'm getting this madness with, is a 'for fun' (which this isn't) scene thrown quickly nto together, not done the detailed finger positioning and all that - the scene is the same HD G8F character, same materials, same hair as before, i'm just tweaking the morphs, plus one HD G8M character, in the Viking Blacksmith set, indoors, HD G8M different morphs, different materials, less clothes, less head hair, some body hair, whataver lighting is in that scene as supplied (no HDR environment lighting) plus one added spotlight, and lots of the scene/environment set to invisible if not visible in the  render. Compared with the previous scenes I was doing with no trouble, I'd say the HD G8F is a bit lighter due to clothing difference, the HD G8M (differetnt character, Kjaer8  instead of Adam rather than my own unique concocoction like the G8F) is a bit lighter due to clothing difference; the Viking Blacksmith set is probably heavier than the beach condo, even though I'm hiding a lot of the blacksmith environment when I didn't hide any of the beach condo, adn the lighting I'm using here is simpler. So, basically that's it: 1 HD G8F, one HD G8M, one environment/setting. I did once, as a test, manage to load 5 of the DAZ G8M characters and one G8F, all HD, in a set from here of a New York basketball court - well, in the alley behind it. In DS 4 it crashed when i hit render, but DS6 rendered!

    <Bangs head on table>

All the time it's takent o get the DS 6 Beta configured, my layout and everything, importing layout and menus, and toolbars leaves a whole ton of stuff to do manually ...

Loaded the scene, hit render ... first time, few seonds, render supposedly finishes, blank. Second time, 9 mins 10s and I'm up to iteration 99, so the slow cpu render.

EXACTLY the same as the madness with the main release version.

I give up. There's absolutely no sense to this.

I think the only thing I can do is delete the environment, leaving the characters, load a different environment and see if it's just something freaky in the environment.

Deleted the Viking blacksmith set, leaving the HD G8F and G8M and their hair etc, and the one piece of prop furniture I'd added (And the one floodlight - and I left the default environment light).

First try at render - completed:

    2026-07-25 01:03:52.274 [INFO] :: Finished rendering.
    2026-07-25 01:03:52.289 [INFO] :: Total Rendering Time: 2 minutes 7.68 seconds

    So GPU render.

It's that set. Though how a set can make it do even number renders blank, odd number renders complete with CPU I cannot imagine!

Oh well, back to what i was actually doing ... but I'm going to have to figure out what I'm going to do when I finish finalising the characters, start doing the story, and get to the part in the story where i was going to use that Viking Blacksmith set ...

  • Is it possible to use DAZ Speech Salad with DAZ Studio 6.25? It always crashed DAZ Studio 4.x, and I would like to continue doing lip-sync animation wiht Genesis 8.1 human figures.

Probably not for now since they're aniblocks and Animate doesn't have a DS6 version yet.

I would suspect so, yes. If I can get confirmation, I'll let you know.

Usually you can check the product on its wiki page > File List:  https://docs.daz3d.com/public/read_me/index/117165/file_list

If there're plugin files for both DS 4.x and 6.x, it should work in DS 6.

It is listed twice at the above URL, Once for DS6, and once for DS4. So will this take care of a lot of the problems with scripts for poses not working? Can a figure be posed solely with this product?

And since it seems to permit posing between figure generations, could a G9 figure, for example, be posed with poses made for G8, or G4, etc.?

You may need to create a seperate post for this in Daz Studio Discussion itself, as it's a 3rd party plugin.

There is a DS 6 installer I'm told.

Want to reinstall Daz 4? You can't. It says I already have it, even though I uninstalled when I got 6. There is no download link.

Installing DS6 doesn't uninstall DS4, it installs next to it. So unless you specifically told DIM to uninstall it, it should still be on your system.

Except that when I got 6, I thought "Why keep 4?" and I uninstalled it. I didn't realize 6 was some vibe-coded nightmare until too late. And other than some pirate site, I don't see that there is a way to get 4 back.

DS 4 should be available in DIM and in your store Product Library.

Check in your product library. It's still in mine and has download links
