Complaints: 1. The weather is very blah today. 2. I spent the afternoon finding the dining table. Which meant sorting & filing all the important & semi-important papers on top of it. Now there is more room forwhat actually belongs on it. But I still have to clean the tabletop & replace the inexpensive tablecloth with another inexpensive but cute tablecloth before dinner. 3. The library has a Mystery Book Date activity. You pick a book hidden in a decorated brown bag with a vague hint. I picked one that said, "Mage and Swords." Of course it was a fantasy novel I'd already read, and hadn't liked that much. 4. I never have a big enough budget for as much half-price chocolate as I want.

Non-complaints: 1. But I picked up a decent sized bag of clearance St. Val's Hershey chocolate. 2. I found 2 gift cards while dealing with the table. 3. The doggos still love me, even though I wouldn't let them sprawl all over aforementioned papers. (Tiny living room floor was only place I had room to work.)

Glad I was sick yesterday and didn't have YouTube TV on and instead was reading until I went to sleep. The cats though were not happy I didn't have their You Tube channels on. They are into 'Birds and Squirrels' fighting over nuts. Charlie is sick too so he just wanted to sleep also. Simon lost the vote, 2 to 1.

There are no fewer than 75 eggs in my fridge right now, in at least five different containers.

  • We never store eggs in the fridge. OK, it never gets very warm in our house, but the reasoning (according to the people who make the regulations for storing eggs in shops) is: If the egg is removed into a warm area for even a short length of time, condensation can form on the shell, and allow cilliated bacteria to swim through pores in the shell. This can then make the egg deteriorate faster. As it means more fridge space for other things, we follow that.

We've had eggs perfectly usable after 6 months out in the 'warm' of our kitchen - though 'warm' is relative. In summer it sometimes gets as high as 16C/61F after a heat wave.

    Regards,

    Richard

I never have more eggs in the house than I'm willing to clean out of the carpet.

Generally that number's about three... enough to make any brownies, French toast, or waffles that Teen Kiddo requests during the week. And they're hidden at the back of the fridge behind a bunch of other stuff. Mom tops me up from her supply when she does the weekly grocery drop.

@memcneil70 - sorry you were sick! It's funny how fur-people get used to their shows. My brother had a bird who really liked to watch cooking shows. My cats generally preferred the fish tank to the TV, though my parents' current cat seems to like nature stuff.

Eggs - During Covid and Bird Flu I tried to keep two 18-egg packages in the small apartment-size refrigerator at a time. We used them for breakfast often, baking, etc... but after I started my weight loss last June, I have been on yogurt for breakfast. I also stopped baking about two years ago. It just took too much out of me physically. Now just for special occasions. So we eat less eggs.

@SilverGirl - I will have to look up a fish tank channel for them. My screen saver on the MacMini are the Dolphins swimming, but while the cats will notice the change over, they don't 'watch' them. Me on the other hand, I find myself lost in them.

It certainly motivated us to go out and conquer the (warmer parts of the) world.

Hmmm..., we've heard from a few people with egg-centric relationships with eggs, but so far nobody's addressed the elephant in the room.  Why do you have so many eggs?  Can I assume that they are chicken eggs?  Do you have a weird hoarding fetish?indecision

It's a difference in the way eggs are treated on our side of The Pond. The US & a few other countries wash eggs before packing & selling them. This removes a natural coating that, under most circumstances, prevents bacteria from entering the shell. So American eggs, even though they are pretty  & clean, have to be kept in the fridge (or otherwise chilled) to prevent bacterial growth.

When we can, we buy eggs from friends who raise chickens (we live in a rural area, so easy to find someone with extra) & keep them in the fridge. I don't think we have to, unlike with the store-bought eggs, but it's habit.

Only one of the containers, accounting for less than a half dozen, is mine; there are two other people in the house independently grocery shopping, and I was compelled to count when I saw a new 40-pack in there last night.

...similar forecast for here today.  So much for the two weeks of "fake spring" we just enjoyed.  Only 39° (F) currently at a bit past noon. Breezy as well. Will be the first time this year I need to break the heavy coat and scarf out.

The roads are predicted to be slick enough that they're preemptively canceling public school due to concerns over bus safety. Not common.

On the bright side, the beautiful weather is no longer taunting me. Hard to be sad about being stuck inside when it's doing that nonsense out there.

On the less bright side, we now have to make a judgment call on whether people who appear to be stranded motorists are actually stranded motorists. Because over the past weekend there were reports that such people in the city that shares our eastern border were not.

@SilverGirl I heard about that. Be very careful.

BTW the fish is on and both cats are cuddled together and 'kind of' watching it. They are washing each other's head, pause, look at the TV, glare at me, close eyes. Repeat.

We are having crazy winds and because the topsoil is so dry, it was picked up and blown across the HWY 25 on the North bound side yesterday. Now 5 dead, many in hospital. The South bound side was reopened by last night, but North was still close this morning. And blizzard winds/snow up in the Rockies.

I just told my boyfriend that and he was clueless about it,

For good or ill, that one only applies to me minimally... the kids and I haven't left the house since we got back from my folks' place on New Year's. I had to warn my parents, though... Dad especially. He can fix anything that could go wrong with a car, and he'd absolutely stop. And being an older white straight cis-dude who's always lived in reasonably safe places, he's not used to having half an eye out for threats. Mom's more likely to smell a trap. Dad also has some hearing loss that isn't fully compensated for with hearing aids, as well as some mental processing lag from other health issues, so he's likely to have trouble parsing what's going on in a situation like that (whereas at home we know what the tricky spots are and just work around them. He's still firecracker smart, he just needs some extra time and a reduction in distractions.)

Yes, of course. I am also going to work this Saturday.

There is a nasty nasal flu going around. Maybe a nose ring might be something to wish list for summer months?

When I was six years old, 1960, living on remote island, Newfoundland,. and schools closed, we (six siblings) would hold hands and weather the storm, trudge up the driveway, snow to our thighs, and knock and knock and knock. The harder we knocked the louder she (housekeeper to be step mom)  dialed the TV volume. We huddled outside with our German Shepperd, until Dad got home. Next day at school we said a prayer for the people who died in the storm, thankful it was not us, and wondered if tomorrow it would be us  that did not survive. Storms are never friends or friendly.

I'm glad you had each other, and that you survived.

Our districting was nonsense. There was a school within very reasonable walking distance, but we were put on a bus and driven 20 minutes across town to a different school. Even aside from the closest one, there were at least three others that were closer than where we were sent. More now... seems like you can't throw a stone without hitting another one.

Non-complaint:  Yay!  Half of this month's paycheck received yesterday, already spent on things like rent, groceries & transportation.frown  But I've had my mini-adventure.yes  Will need to have another mini-adventure soon for laundry, and another grocery run.  Although I did get to the beanery in the decrepit mini-mall for breakfast, I didn't get Biscuit & Gravy, but opted for their Breakfast Sandwich (i.e. "Egg McMuffin"), which was properly done.  So round, so firm, so fully packed**, Mmm...,heart McDonald's, eat your heart out.cheeky

Just saw Crime 101.  I had to check out the ladies room right before the end.  It had Mark Ruffelo and Chris Hemsworth.  Mark looked like he was trying to keep calm so he won't let his big mean green alter ego out.
oops wrong movie,  What was the name of that movie that both Mark Ruffalo and Chris Hemsworth were both in?

Non-complaint:  Weather still non-frigid.yes  And I've had a couple of days I didn't need to run my humidifiers.  So, this morning I had a chance to finally clean them with a dilute vinegar solution to get rid of the calcium dust deposits.  I'll tackle my hundred, or so, displayed collectibles some other day.  Ug, so many things to clean.  But I remember back in the '50s when the houses along this main street always kept their windows open in the summer (no air-conditioning) and road dust was everywhere, because there was no Interstate bypassing the town, so all the cars came along this street.  My grandmother was forever dusting but she smartly kept her collectibles in a big glass cabinet.  I would too, if I had one, but try to find a decent one under a thousand dollars these days.frown  I have many of my more fragile collectibles under glass display domes of various sizes scrounged from yard sales & auctions, but most of my items are simply sitting out on shelves, attracting dust.indecision
