Complaint: I'm Worried about Saturday the Fourteenth

  • frank0314frank0314 Posts: 14,790

With Nov 13th being mine, if it fell on Friday, I don't leave the house. I've had a very wide range of stupid stuff happen over the years. At least I was born on a Thursday.

Weird, my son was born on a Wednesday the 13th. Generally any 13th is pretty okay for us. But yesterday, I have to say traffic was nuts and folks were doing their best to make it a really bad day for themselves and others.

I describe really terrible days as a cross between Friday the 13th & a Monday.

Pre V-day issues, maybe? I generally stay out of public around commercial holidays if I can manage it, but the year I was pregnant with Teen Kiddo I wound up at Trader Joe's... three guys ahead of me panic-buying flowers and chocolates, and then there's me with three cans of spaghetti O's and a jar of pickles. The look on the clerk's face was priceless. I felt like a walking punchline, but it sure as heck wasn't going to sway me from the only two things that sounded edible at the moment.

Yeah, flatmate said that at Target around 9am, a quiet morning all of a sudden turned into mayhem. One normal cashier and him on (manning green-side self-check outs 8 registers) were swamped. He chalked it up to the 13th, V day, President Day weekend, snow in the mountains finally, and people off taking a four day weekend going crazy. By 2pm, it was going strong still. One woman bought over $120.00 of balloons! I watched a guy walk down the main mezzanine with seven V day balloons. Thought it might be for each year of their marriage/relationship?

Oh wow, yeah, I hadn't even thought about how Presidents Day on Monday and V-day on Saturday would interact.

Complaint: Yet another home visit assessment in the process of getting Little Dude the appropriate supports. Same questions as the last one I had to complete for the other thing last fall... why on earth can't they just share the info??

non-complaint: Assessor was nice, it went well, and best of all, Little Dude was asleep for the whole thing.

complaint: ... but he went to sleep at 11:30, and the assessment was from 2:30-4:30. I got to sleep about an hour later. He woke at 9:30 PM. It may be most merciful to all involved if he sleeps through, but I'm stinkin' tired.

Complaint: Seriously, how many days in the 40's does it take before my driveway melts down to just the pavement??? (Having a north-facing house sucks.) Not that it probably matters because we're still stuck inside, but it's the principle of the matter. I'm just super ready for the ice to be gone, and it's showing no signs of actually doing that, regardless of what the forecast has promised us.

non-complaint: Teen Kiddo made brownies yesterday. Nom. It works out well because they like the edge pieces and I like the middle pieces. (Little Dude finds the entire concept revolting.)

Complaint:  I have to make an appointment for my ride on the Ancient Person's Bus into the city, a day ahead of time.  I've avoided going into Jamestown for almost two weeks to try to save money.  Finally, February's SS deposit arrives and I can have a mini-adventure this week.  I'm primed and ready to go grocery shopping, so this morning I dial up the dispatcher to schedule a bus for tomorrow morning and get the recording saying they're not available because today is "President's Day" (joint celebration of birthdays of Washington and Lincoln).  (*Sigh*).   No salad, no milk, no bananas, no cereal, no oatmeal, no bread, no apples.  Gotta wait till Wednesday.  One extra day of cheese and crackers and I'm out of cheese.frown  Yeah, yeah, I ain't-a-gonna starve 'cause I have lots of canned stuff, but one gets tired of canned stuff.cheeky  I want a mini-adventure breakfastof Sausage Gravy & Biscuit in the hole-in-the-wall beanery at the decrepit mini-mall, before using the rest of the morning for the exciting experience of shopping for groceries again.  Patience, LG.  Patience.indecision

Non-complaint:  A rummage through my freezer and pantry found enough ingredients (hamburg, jar of tomato sauce, canned tomatoes, canned mushroom pieces, elbow macaroni, an onion) to make a pot of goulash.  So I did.  Mmmm... goulash.  I even had a frozen Jalapeno pepper that made it into the pot, along with a can of kidney beans, a big dash of cayenne pepper, and chili pepper.  So, I guess the concoction is now more accurately called chili-mac.  Mmmm... chili-mac!  Now my freezer is full of containers of chili-mac.yes  Wow, it is hot!heart  Or as Lucy would say:  "And so tasty too" as immortalized in a 50 foot high painting on the parking ramp in downtown Jamestown, NY.cool

So, in the United States people have to pay taxes, generally by the middle of April. I paid for TurboTax software, and downloaded it. After I tried to install it, it informed me that it will not install because I have Windows 10 instead of Windows 11. They said the paid download could be converted to use the paid version of “TurboTax online” on their website. I suspect getting everybody to go to their website is actually the end goal. More on that later.

Costco says they will not accept the return of software. Never mind that I could actually buy a new computer there, do my taxes, and return the computer.

So I went to the TurboTax website. I found out because I get no deductions whatsoever, I qualify to actually use the free online filing even without a prior purchase. That worked, but it means I never should have spent money on TurboTax in the first place.

Re Tax Time. I had made an appointment last year with H&R Block which was lost when I moved to a new computer. But they just contacted me to confirm my appointment for a coming Saturday in late February. And just a day later, my 401k account contacted me to say my biggy tax document I need would be delayed until a week after that appointment in March! Whatever happened to companies having to have documents ready by 31 January?

I hate this time of the year. Chasing down donations to charities that don't send EOY totals, delayed documents, and trying to schedule normal life around taxes. At least H&R Block and my accountant is on the ball. I will need to call them tomorrow.

Sympathies to my fellow US folk enduring tax season. I'm still waiting on forms that I'm quite sure ought yo have been here by now... so now the question is whether they didn't send it or whether my postal carrier delivered it to someone else (something that happens with alarming frequency). So I guess I get to go figure that out in my copious free time.

Turbotax wouldn't let me file for free because earned more than $1,500 interest. There always seems to be some catch. So, I went with Taxslayer because their rates were lower.

I went to work! Yay! I was told I could get a free steak sandwich.  I assumed small.  I opened up the box and it was regular steak with bacon!

Don't forget to set some aside against future need.

There is a certain form we have to file with our return, and there's no deadline for sending it to the taxpayer. So, usually we don't get it until close to the filing deadline, unless we prod or beg the issuer.

If anyone is looking for free tax preparation, or just help, AARP offers those services. We've used the AARP service for years & recommend it. You don't need to be retirement age or a member, but there is an income limit I think. Info is on their website. The IRS has a similar program called VITA.
