I think I have a good bead on how to adapt LAMH fur to Iray, shader-wise -- been using Unshaven 2 'snow white' shader, then plugging in the converted image maps into diffuse and transparency and changing their brightness to 255 and 240 respectively.

And then increasing Glossy Specular to, oh, about 170, 180.

Terradome3 HDR plugging into Iray Skies dome, Terradome A and B zone/textures, and fog atmosphere (usually I avoid it but decided to do it in-engine rather than post)

Then a lot of Tone Mapping to get it to come together.

Feeling a bit festive so I did this in IRAY, no postwork!

The interactive preview make finding the right displacement settings for the garland pretty easy.

That tree looks cut, not artificial. The whole scene feels like I just walked into someone's house a few days before Christmas, (after they'd cleaned in anticipation of guests, of course.)

I'd love to know where you found that tree. And/or where to find the garlands, too!

    yes yes

That fur looks very realistic, Will.

Thanks! I've had a LOT of false starts with LAMH in Iray, but that seems a reliable workflow. I should try it with some human hair.

Thanks, that was the idea, LOL. I LOVE Christmas and have these Norman Rockwell type of ideas of how the holiday should be and look and this isn't far off from my actual tree and fireplace. The tree is mine and is 30K worth of polys as well the the garland which is a high poly helix mesh with a noise filter applied for displacement and then an IRAY metal texture. Same for the lights which are just small polys seperated by group for color and arranged around the tree with IRAY emmisive shaders. The ornaments are from a tree I found on the web, minus the tree to save time, LOL.

The garlands around the fireplace are from RDNA in the freebie section, not sure it exists still with the merger, but I have had them awhile.

Hey Will, how many MB is that hair.  That looks really thick.

This is the first render that took almost 3 days. I finally stopped it at I think 18% converged but it was usable...  Now trying out a Poser RDNA scene that I added Iray Uber to and specific materials on a few objects. I stopped it to check the render settings but it was at 16% converged for over 16 hours... All the setting are in above post. Thanks.

Convergence is an estimate, based on a number of internal metrics Iray uses to try to determine completeness. In scenes like this one it's virtually useless. Only you can determine if it's fully rendered.

Your screen shots of the rendering progress suggests each iteration is taking a very long time. It's not the number of iterations, which would drive faster convergence, but the computational overhead of the scene for each iteration. The intended appearance of your image notwithstanding, the following are probably contributing to slowdowns for each pass:

    1. Hair texture. Stranded hair can really slow down any render, depending on how it was done.

    2. Number of reflections. As noted, you can change the Max Path Length to a positive number; -1 means "infinite," which when glass and other reflective surfaces are involved, can exponentially affect render times. Avoid values under 6, or else multi-surfaced objects like eyes will appear black.

    3. Light-tone map imbalance. In one of your screenshots you show a shutter speed of 1/16 second. This suggests that there's not enough light in the scene, and there is a dearth of samples in each pass. Increase the light, then adjust the tone mapping to return the image to the overall look you want. Light intensity and exposure is reciprocal: double the light; halve the exposure. The more light in the scene, the more samples. The more samples, the faster the pixel conversion.

    4. Indirect light illuminating the interior. This is hard to tell given your setup, but it appears the walls and wood work are all lit indirectly from the light coming through the window. Nice effect, but it causes Iray to work overtime. Introduce "hidden" light sources inside to add light in critical areas. This is a common technique in photography and movies, and has to do with giving detail in otherwise dark areas of the frame. When done properly, the viewer will not be able to discern the additional light sources, but parts of the scene will "read" better because of the booster lights. In Iray, one or two well placed auxilliary lights can help cut down render time.

Edited to add: All this said, it's a great scene as-is, so hopefully whatever you do to fix the rendering slowness won't alter the effect of the image.

"Double the light, halve the exposure" --  I would have never thought of that, thanks!

  • I think I'm all caught up in this thread.  I haven't been rendering as much the last few weeks and what little I have been doing has actually been in 3DL.  Lots of great images in this thread.  I did manage to try out Christmas Dinner in Iray, but that's about it lately.  Way too many things on my list of things to do.  Anway, it's not much, but here's my one Iray render in awhile.

    Gasp! G3F render by me!

Was testing VWD on the one G3F dress I own, the pricess dress. Then decided it needed a backdrop. Then I still found it boring, and the hatchling really brought it together.

If I was hugely motivated maybe I'd try updating the hatchling skin a little, but good enough.

(The texture on that dress is GORGEOUS)

FG is awesome when you find the right pic great customer support  http://fav.me/d4hv01e

HRDI can be a pain to set up since you have no BG to line up characters lots of going back & forth between texture shaded and iray preview...

I love modern contemporary design and sparse environments.  I'm also fascinated with visual perspective.  The set designs and cinematography featured in movies like 2001: A Space Odyssey and Tron: Legacy were a visual feast for me.  So, for my first artistic render with my new dual 980 Ti's, I loaded a Secured Access Hallway I bought a while ago and pointed a camera straight down its full length.  The elevator's red interior offers a nice contrast against the grey hallway, so I put G3F inside for a practical excuse to have its doors opened.
