The scene is still rendering here. One hour and thirty minutes, 4% convergence and still only using 5.8GB of 16GB of system memory. It is just the basic Iray scene loaded and all the materials loaded and the Iray scen render setting that come with it loaded. All the changes I made were to load a figure and alter the Tone Mapping settings.

Next I going to try to add G2M back into the scene and see if that crashes studio  . its not my GPU memory its using it the system Physical memory  and even if it ws using all my PGU  thats a heck of a lot of gpu at 16 gigs.. to be using with 1 character at 720p  isn;t it?

Read what DAZ_Spooky just posted "it will not combine Video Ram on SLI cards." Iray will only see the memory in your first GPU and that's all it will be able to use. Which makes sense when you say only 55% of GPU memory is being used, as in 16 divide by 2.

It see the memory on each GPU, it does not combine them.

So for example youhave a 980 with 4GB of Ram, a 980ti with 6GB of Ram and a Titan X with 12 GB of Ram.

If your scene fits on 4 GB of Ram then it will use the CPU and all three cards. If your scene requires 5GB of Ram then it will run on the 980ti, the TitanX and the CPU but not the 980.

If your scene requires 11GB of Ram then it will run on hte TitanX and the CPU.

If your scene requires more than 12 GB of Ram then it will render CPU only.

Yeah, as I have read before. It would seem that Ivy was not aware of it. In Ivy's case when I say it will only see the first card's memory, it's just a quick assumption. Hopefully Ivy's got the gist of what I have been trying to explain.

And it would seem that Ivy had other processes running using up memory.

    BTW, Ivy is a she?

I took Y'all advice & I disable my SLi and pull the socket connector off the 2 cards that seem to improve things greatly  and if you noticed  the second card was reconized by daz studio.  so that was properly my issue

    And yes I am a girl..lol

    I thought I asked, so that I didn't get a "dude, I am not a girl." :)

It's happened to me a few times. I kept using the word "she" as I was typing replies and then changing that to Ivy.

This was three hours and only 5% conveged and it never took more than 6GB of my system memory.

Experimenting a bit. Trying to get good backdrops, and... there's something about quiet night-time scenes that appeal to me.

It occurred to me that the only thing I needed for a 'night time' backdrop was making a suitable cloudy sky and that I could just add in the stars instead of trying to render it all together. I did a fairly basic sky in Carrara, futzed with it, then put it in moonscape and some water (which ended up as titanium metal with some ripple patterns, heh)

..I like the ripples in the wter and moon reflection.

...a goofy one I did for last month's RRRR:

Took over 6 hours to render for some reason (2 hours more than the Railway Station scene)

    Such a Horrid Clang.

It is quite beautiful, if you ignore the characters. All that wood, shiny metal and interesting shadows.

...sadly the only character who is fully optomised for Iray (skin eyes, hair & all) is Leela who is seated at the organ with her back to the camera.  For everyone else I just applied the base Iray Uber and G2F shader without doing any detailed tweaking to cut down the render time as I was on a  tight deadline.

I just assumed, based on the title of the image, (and the toy-like colors of the horns,) the characters were intended to "clang" (clash) with the rest of the image. If that wasn't your original intent, then it is a shame you didn't have more time before the deadline. But... I like it as is. I find the characters to be a tongue-in-cheek contrast to the whole majesty of the pipe organ. It is a fun image.
    yes

    ...thank you.

Indeed the clash is intentional as I was going for the humour aspect of the challenge (they give awards for both best and funniest pics). I actually was rather surprised at how good the setting and lighting looked and yes wish I had more time to optimise all the characters and clothing.

IN contrast, the characters in my railway station scene do fit in much better, but then, I was able to spend a lot more time setting them up and optimising all the textures. Still working on that one before submitting it to the galleries.

The horns the girls are playing are a freebie vuvuzela, one of the most annoying and infernal items (next to the leaf blower) ever conceived by humankind.

It was primarily RL that got in the way of putting more time into it, what with packing up, cleaning, moving, as well as dealing with doctor appointments, side effects of meds, and the SSA all last month. The long render times didn't help either, especially during the testing and proofing phase. As my GPU has only 1 GB of video memory, I am unable to use Iray view mode as it causes the Daz to crash, so I had to run a lot of test renders. I actually got the OK to post a screen shot of the scene as a placeholder to make the deadline while the final render was in process as the voting didn't start for another couple days.

I really need a Titan-X or at least a used Quadro K-5200 but just don't have the funds for either one. It would really cut down on all the time I spend (as well as wear and tear on the CPU) running test renders.

All these Fantastic Renders! Been away for a while.....Life getting in the way of my Art.....finally broke down and got GF3....decided I liked the Vyria for Arabella 7 character the best for now.....here she is as My Maker......combined Wild Hair with Christina Hair, attempting to get similar hair shades....

..I hear you on the RL rubbish.  Things are finally settling down for me and with the weather heading into a more normal wintry pattern (hard to sit inside when it is nice out especially after living in a fairly dark flat for almost 18 years), I'll have more time to devote to my work.

... So anyway this is  Natasha for Genesis 2 Female   My new fav girl

(you really got see how great she looks all natural .( Front)   (Back) she is really beautiful . )

I like how the sun shines in the background. She does look great.

Thanks for the comment .. I just love her curves and how much meat she has on her bones. . Though I am not able to render her in Iray using the Castle dungeon because I only have 24 gigs of rams and it went way over that trying to render it ,My NVIDIA cards handle it just great and I can render the castle without any characters, and 4 light shaders.  but as soon as I add  Natasha into the mix..my Ram usage went over the 24 gigs I have and and crashes Studio. So I'm going to have t play around with it for a while to see how come its using so much Memory. . I don;t even think I can install any larger Ram chip sets into my system so I'm gonna have to find a work around for it.   Other wise that Castle dungeon really looks great just uses a ton of  Ram memory

...for the "Horrid Clang" scene, the render woes I was running into were a combination of too many mesh lights and the fact it was an interior scene.  I turned them all off and just used a single cylinder primitive with the emissive shader which helped eliminate to the "stall" I kept running into at 24% conversion. Somewhat amazed it didn't crash the programme as I only have 12 GB.

....this is why I'm following development of Nvidia's Pascal architecture GPUs. 16 - 32 GB should be enough overhead for even my scenes.

Trying out the new http://www.daz3d.com/gully-hair-for-genesis-3-females, I must say I'm really impressed, results look great to me at default iray materials.

  • @Rafmer - Might have to pick that up.  Looks like it might be great for some sci fi stuff too possibly.

New one that just finished late last night.  Thanks to a friend on FB I had to go spend some more money after seeing one of his latest images with Emma & Jordi's "Atskuko" character. So I had to pick her up and these 2 outfits. (Left) Miss Von Dark Outfit also by Emma and Jordi and Lolita Gothic (right) by Meipe. Building by Danie and Marforno "DM's Little Chapel"

More experiments with aging. This adds some of the aged hands freebie from Sharecg (though not too much, the knuckles look weird), witch hands, and a few other things. Many other things (including skin overlay + yanmei skin, to add more wrinkles and age spots and whatnot)

The outfit is dynamic, though the texture is mostly my own creation.

    that is most excellent

About 20 to 40% is best...the full 100% is for when you want a 1000 yr old lich or something.  (should have put that in the read me)

Will, I like what you're doing with the Aging morphs.

I'm trying out some new stuff here, focusing on trying to get natural looking smile expressions.

I'm still super pleased with how well G3F's arms and shoulders bend compared to any previous generation of DAZ figure. I don't think the older ones could successfully pull off this overhead pose.
