I would love a version of Ryuu in G2 + G3, he is such an awesome and unique character, certainly among the best characters for me.

The morph set I made for Lee 6 is probably the closest I'm doing to a asian character for a long while.

I'm sure there will be a Stephanie 7 and Aiko 7, they haven't missed a generation yet, I'm sorta patiently waiting on Michael 7, I got store credit saved for his release but if he doesn't come soon the money could be long gone lol, I did buy Scott but have almost enough aside for his release price with intro and pc discount so hopefully it will be enough to cover the morph packs as well

I think Lee sold well.  Not sure about Monique/Mei-Lin./Darius.

I do think Darius and Lee are my favorites of those. They just are different enough to be interesting and warrant unique shapes.

Of course one of my favorite Asian Characters is Ryuu. Hope to see a gen 7 adaption of him assuming that Gen 7 male makes this possible.

Would like to see some different bases though. Unless the figures are sufficiently unique, I don't see needing more Gen7 women.... Would like an alien/other type base figure (not a kidlike fairy please).  We seem to have the human girl with tanned skin covered.

I think our next female is Arabella. I'm not hopeful that is the name of an alien. Sadly.

Arabella would leap, no, she would positively swan dive into my cart if she were visibly about 60. With a good elderly woman texture for the G3F UV.

  • Uhm.. can someone explain all this to me? I cannot for the life of me understand why people keep buying these canned characters.. Genesis 1 with all the morph sets can be turned into virtually any character you want with the turn of a few dials, and with the right files can use virtually any clothing/outfits from Generations 1-6...  Why do we need another UV set with the insane level of versatility already provided in Genesis 1?

I'm not holding my breath. I think it will be a thin waifish pixie/ballerina type figure like Giselle.

I loved Genesis.  Wish we could go back to that versatile of a model. The gender split has been very unkind to male figures, and I loved mixing things up and not having to buy hair fits and clothing fits for genders.

I don't see the need for most UV sets. The extreme ones I can understand. Some of them just seem a way to make more money. I will be surprised if there is anything else released for the UV set that came with Scott.

I do think they have overdid it a bit with releasing quite so many gen 3 females and not one male. I can understand Victoria 7... But Josie? I just don't get releasing teen figures before a male base has even been released.

I also think We got Lilith last year around October right? will we get Lilith 7 then?

I doubt it, she's only a year old or so. But you never know. Josie and Vickie are both 2 years old about. Means nothing, but if for example Lee 7 came out in a few months I think people would be annoyed. So I think the most recent releases may be closer to the end of the cycle. not last or in same exact time frame, but just not too soon either.

I suspect a lot of Gen 6 bases, like Lilth, Lee etc will not get an equivalent named one in generation 7. The only absolute certs are Victoria and Michael, all the rest could be new names like Karen, Bethany etc. Whilst I think an Aiko 7 is highly likely, even that is not guaranteed, as it was a long time before Aiko arrived as a Gen 6 base.

I suspect we'll see Olympia 7. That is probably one of the few I will actually buy, since I really adore Olympia. Maybe a Stephanie 7.

Actually, DAZ_Steve confirmed that Olympia 7 and Lilith 7 are indeed in the works because they were among the most successful Genesis 2 characters.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a Mei Lin 7 & Lee 7, actually. Both Gen 6 bases got notable character and content support post-release. Plus, Asian stuff is always a hit here in the store, which is all the more reason why I can't fathom the reality of Hiro not selling well... >_>

  • Yep.

I am not surprised Hiro doesn't sell. He doesn't match Aiko. He isn't a 'sexy' character, his content is generic, and he's a weird mix between juvenile and teen. I would imagine that's not big with the base here, who likes female, and sexy. =-0

In general I have never liked the character. But I'm not a huge anime/manga fan. I like my men older.

Although I like genesis, for it's genderless diversity and flexibility I prefer the bends and look of gen 2. Especially the arms, shoulder area. The fingers of genesis male always had an unfortunate sausage quality.

....Um....that would be because Hiro isn't actually Asian?  I mean, it's anime and most anime is actually very western looking and not really asian when you come right down to it.  I'm sure there are other reasons, but certainly, if I think Asian, I don't really think Aiko or Hiro.

Pretty much my thought. The most common Anime characters are high-school age into the very early twenties, and very very few younger or older primary characters.

Perhaps folks think of Anime being Asian because most of the really popular Anime comics are drawn by well know Asian artists in the comic book and annimation fields.  I kinda thought that Anime was an Asian thing too.... I guess we learn stuff every day!

Depends on the crowd. In the States Anime was a bad work for a duration, or Japanimation and what not. But in japan, Animation is Anime. East/West matters not. However you have a Western populace who only accept Japanese/Korean produced works as "Anime".

Now to be fair, Japan and Korea do make the most anime yearly. And for the most part, that is what a lot of people mean by anime. Aiko and Hiro are obviously Japanese inspired. They are common Japanese names. And in Japanese anime, you can't ever tell nationality or ethnicity cause Japanese girls can be blondes, or blue haired.

When people say Aiko and Hiro aren't Japanese, it's an oversimplification. They obviously are inspired by that style of Anime. And when they bill those figures as "Anime" (including Keiko) that is the audience they are targeting. People who like Japanese styled/influenced Anime. (don't forget Hitomi, see a trend with the names?)

And honestly, Anime characters are commonly middleschoolers. More middleschoolers than 20 year olds. 20 is over the hill, middleschoolers save the universe in mech suits. We could do some math, but saying younger than High school isn't represented much, isn't accurate. There is a ton of Middleschool anime, and it's not just for kiddies. (even if the leads are kiddies)

Hiro fit the age group of most male leads. He's 14-17(could be up to 20). He may seem younger to folks who don't watch anime and aren't as familiar with the huge eyes :)

  • I've read my share of manga but the style doesn't resonate with me too much especially as an adult. Too age ambiguous for me. When I was growing up I preferred more traditional western style.... As I grew older manga and manga fusion became quite common, and although I read it from time to time I still prefer western style.

I'm firmly in the G1 category myself for all the reasons listed above, and with autofit/clones/smoothers I have almost no issues with wardrobe other than the occasional poke through using M4/V4, G1, & G2 clothing... For my needs, G1 provides enough resolution and details... however, if someone is into hyper realistic renders, or is trying for photo real, G2 is noticeable if only slightly better than G1, and from what little I've used, G3 is slightly better than G2. for me, neither G2 nor G3 offers enough improvement to warrant abandoning G1 just yet, but I know there will come a day when G1 looks as dated as M3....  Just like any 1980s CGI looks well, like 1980's CGI...

Anime is certainly Japanese, or a Japanese-style of animation, but the stylization, in it's most well-known and popular forms, were very westernized.  Certain authority figures, such as parents, would be given features more reminiscent of Japanese features, but they were normally not the main characters that people would remember from a series.  For this reason I had said I don't consider these characters Asian despite names such as Aiko, Hiro, Hitomi, Keiko or others.

I do not like the pecs, and face of gen 2 male, so more often than not, I'm dialing in a gen 1 morph to gen 2 male to get a look I prefer.

I haven't taken to gen 3 yet at all. So we'll see how the male line works.

Westernization is in the eye of the beholder, as is orientalization, so to speak.

Well they are pixels so they aren't Japanese for that simple fact.

    Anime is certainly Japanese,

And again whether Anime is Japanese style or not depends on your slant, but you will find it's not universally held that Anime is Japanese styled. Hence the Japanese including Disney and even Simpsons in Anime :) Anime is just Animation to the Japanese. It's westerners who associate the word with a particular style. Sure when westerners say Anime I assume they mean japanese styled. And I mostly mingle with westerners, but not exclusively.

Anime is just a short world for Animation. Not a word designed to identify style or origin. Though I know the majority will argue thats not the case. The spin in meaning didn't come from the source however.

That's a good  decent video though I only watched like 60 seconds so far. It addressed the biggest point of confusion I think people stumble upon.

I'm laughing at all the youtubes about Anime characters being white. Shows tend to give characters a background so you know what is intended. It's different with Aiko/Hiro dolls because they are stock figures that others can do whatever they want with.

I have many more comments to add, but I'm tired, and will only add, that it is important to remember, that especially in Japan, there is a cultural fascination with western looks... to the point where there is a surgery to make girls eyes round... and it isn't uncommon throughout anime to have western looking characters... As for hair color... that is a cultural thing that I don't feel comfortable to try to explain....

And of course there is the second aspect of this, which is people see what they want to see in characters... I'm a fan of Bleach. Many Anime I've watched have setting that are vague as to where/when they are, but Bleach is 50% based in modern day Tokyo, 50% other... I made the comment in a bleach forum about "why it seemed there were no Japanese people in Tokyo", to which I go a response of  " I see mostly Japanese people in Bleach, as do most of my friends in Japan". It's all about points of view... Westerners tend to pick up western features, where Easterners are going to see Eastern features in the same character... Anime drawings are often simple enough to allow one own "minds eye" to fill in the blanks...

As for Hiro and Aiko, whether or not you deem them Japanese or not, They certainly would fit into most Anime I've seen without issue, even those based in modern day Japan.

P.S. can we get the spellcheck back to the old way... It is far too easy to forget to run it...

You can't say that without expecting someone to challenge it! "Thats not real anime!" Cause a very small but vocal group think there is such a thing as pure distilled "real" anime. frown Everything else is not "real" anime, only stuff they accept is.
