Teen Josie First Impressions

  • G3F is really big disappointment for me so far. Every figure looks shoddy and amateurish. The skin textures too often end up a weird shade of orange, so much so that there's actually been add-ons released to this effect. Josie 7 doesn't even look like a teen... or a human being for that matter. Am I the only one who's had this disappointment? I had high hopes for G3. I really like the joints, expressions, etc. but I just don't like any of the figures so far. At this point, I bet M7 will be lackluster as well.

Not the only one. I agree with you - I like the bends and expressions of the G3 model, but I haven't really liked the look of most of the characters so far.

Nope. So far genesis 3 has been a disappointment. Compounded by the all female figure line and the sallow textures.

Josie has never been my favorite character. I'm not really into the kewpie doll look. But I know others like her.

Mind you, 'hispanic' covers a lot of ground. I'm hispanic, and in my case that means 'white enough to show up in a black light.'

I'm 1/64th hispanic and 1/64th irish and lots of other stuff.

    I'm a Genesis 7 Male. Coming Soon™

I'm white enough to make the current Daz forums seem like the old dark theme.

And I made a quick character with A bit of teen Josie, Amandla, Aiko, Hitomi and other secret sauce thingies. Cause Josie's eyes aren't quit big enough for me yet devilwink

Could not resist sale price for the bundle. Below is an iray render of Teen Josie (on the left)

and Mary (on the right) from http://www.daz3d.com/llola-s-lovely-ladies

with head shape of Teen Josie set to 100%.

I think she will be good to mix with the other shapes available for Genesis 3 Female.

Thats a really nice pic - what lighting is that, hdr?

Thanks. It is just the standard light, that comes with Daz Studio, when rendering with iray.

I'm not really sure what you're referring to. Do you mean the Ruins-B-500 hdr in the environment map? Or do you mean you set up some portrait lighting using the standard photometric lights?

It is just the hdr in the environment map, the Ruins-B-500.

I think she looks good, and might get her... I will join the camp wishing she was a little more realistic. This style with the too big head and eyes when she's not really a "toon" has frustrated me in the past, especially Josie 6... And this generation's version seems closer, if not quite to where I want. I might still want to try scaling and see how it goes. A DAZ teen could have real proportions and still be somewhat doll-like, and I'd be thrilled. The classic real-world example:

The film Leon, Natalie Portman iirc.

    Wow, I really love Teen Josie 7 ... 8)

Used head morph of my previous asian character made with Eva 7
combined with Teen Josie 7 head ...

    Quick render test on Iray.

Teen Josie 7 with Karen 7 Maps (3DL),
Genesis 3 Head Morphs, Genesis 3 Female Head Morph Resource Kit,
    200 plus - Head & Face Morphs for Genesis 3 Female(s)

is this a remake character you've done of your profile pic or you just used this new character as your new avatar if it's the first and your avatar is a genesis 2 character you created than that's a pretty impressive remake update on TJ you did

My avatar is Genesis 2 Female version :)
The head of TJ version is based on Eva7 character made few days ago.

Here is the Eva7 version :

    Damn, that's very good.

I see her as more Hispanic than "tanned" but it's still nice to have.  It's a bit too smooth though - no moles, freckles, hair, or other imperfections to break it up.

Her face is full of freckles, here's a shot.

Go up a few nested quotes.  It was refering to the http://www.daz3d.com/amandla-for-teen-josie-7 texture, not the default one.

Hmm, is it just me or does her navel look a tad odd? I mean I know some people have outies, but this... I think someone might have forgotten to zero out the navel before sculpting the morph, maybe?

    TD

It helps if you explain what you're seeing this on?  The base character or a character morph based on Teen Josie 7?  I'm not seeing what you're getting on anything yet.

Thanks for checking. It was just the base figure with one of the default poses. I just got back from work and have been testing, but I cannot reproduce it. Probably Gremlins in my machine... I'll keep playing, but so far everything looked fine tonight. I will edit my previous post and remove the image to avoid unnecessary alarm...

    Ciao

¡Hermano William! Yes, because it is a culture, with differents etnic groups composing it, from Patagonia until USA, España and others.  I know that the world hispanic was too much general against the correct type of mestizaje from european, afroamerican and indigena produced  across the several generations. For me if enough to see her like my sister. wink

Here's my (slightly tweaked) Josie 7.  I think the thing with Thorne characters, at least to me, is that the faces tend to look younger than the bodies. To be fair they're not alone in this that's basically Disney's MO too. It's pretty much the time honored "how to make cute and appealing".

The hardest thing for me to tweak was the nose Josie has a very soft nose and (in part because I've pretty much had the same amount of definition to my nose since I was 4) I tend to associate soft undefined noses with toddlers more than teens

All said and done... She's pretty adorable

Well even though I said I wouldn't buy G3 stuff I was tempted till I found out that I have no where near enough cash, dumb Aussie dollar is in the toilet right now so even with a cart value of $45 USD that blows out to about $64 AUD..  Ah well get her at another sale some time 10 years from now..

Also not sure how people are getting $28 for the pro bundle I cant get it below $31 and if I add 3 Full Throttle items the pro bundle price goes up not down..

I feel your pain living in Adelaide, while I have not bought any G3F products at all due to it not working in Carrara, I have bought a few other PA sale items and all the discounts get eaten away by our crap exchange rate, it has to really blow me away now before I will buy it.

i hope things improve on the world market as my Wishlist just keeps growing

  • I swore to pass on Josie, but this time the kit and the price were just too good. $28.01 for three sets of nice clothing, one Fantasy clothing (that I'm unlikely to ever use), 2 hairs (one of which has a squirrelly error I haven't worked out yet), a special-purpose posekit, an everyday posekit, 2 characters (one Southern African) and all the trimmings... Well beyond worth the money, even if I only ever use the stuff for promos.

Although I may use a bit of Josie in a character morph here soon. The character skins will make lovely examples as well.

The only thing I don't like on her are the far too long lower eyelashes. They look very unnatural, and the DAZ head morphs don't allow to change upper and lower lashes separately. So I have to take other figures' lashes.

This may or may not help - there's a hidden property under Shaping > Eyes > People called "Teen Josie 7 Lashes" (use Show Hidden Properties in the dropdown menu to see it). It still doesn't adjust the lashes separately, but setting it to zero looks a lot less crazy to me anyway.

Amandla was definitley supposed to be an African American/White European mix girl -.- She was inspired by her namesake

This pro bundle does have a tanned girl. Which is neato. Not sure if she's any good though as I haven't downloaded the pack yet.(edit, thinking about it, this is one of those PA partnerships where I have a few products of theirs that I really like. I like their style a lot, so for me she probably will be useful. They don't do hyper realistic stuff, they do softer more stylized characters a lot. They tend to be very pretty but maybe not for everyone because of the style.)

I could see her being a decent base for a stylized or even toon character with the right morphs. Also some of the expressions seem to show she could age well and be an adult too. So thanks to DemonicaEvilius, Silver for their efforts. (BTW Asobi is still my fave!)

Asobi is still one of my favorites too ^_^ Amandla was definitley supposed to be more then tanned haha she is an African American/White European mix girl -.- She was inspired by her namesake ;) I really do like Josie but I liked Belle more I do hope we get a Belle 7 :D Here is one of my renders of Amandla with some DT lighting.

A make-up line on a natural texture does sound like an issue worth reporting - please do so if you haven't already.

I have no idea how to report and I'm not confident enough that it's an issue - can someone other than me who has her test it out and see if they think her jawline is fine? I'm seeing a pretty noticable tone difference between her face and body on all the makeups (I posted an image earlier in the thread; lighting does not alter it.)

Aside from her makeup woes, I'm just glad she doesn't have the hasn't slept in 3 weeks look that Josie 6 had.

Just messing around with my new stuff. Amandla was probably the biggest reason why I bought the Pro bundle. I just blended in some Ilicites because I felt like doing that.

Also got Attica armor. I slapped the armor on top of the sci fi bodysuit that came with Ysabeau 6 because you always need a little bit of skimpy wear!

Just playing with Teen Josie 7 out of the box. Added Sienna Hair which I love...3DL render. (She loads with iray materials so had to switch to the 3DL version.which was only one click after I found them. They're in Materials not with the character.)

I have to get on-board on the disappointment train, myself... I'm really not seeing a "Teen Josie" so much as I'm seeing a "teenage stylized fairy doll". If anything, the more I look at her, the more she looks like a blend of Girl 6 or Keiko 6 with an attempt of realism thrown in there.

    Post edited by RCDeschene on
  • Well, her eyes being bigger than one would expect from a more mature character isnt' a surprise, as between ten and eighteen people even out the features that made them the subject of protectiveness from the adults as infants. Josie's eyes are a hair exaggerated, but I've seen that on real people before, so I just wrote it off.

As for her being too tall, I had my full height before I turned sixteen, as did most of my peer group. When I look at her, I see a girl in the fifteen-nineteen range, so being at the median height for an adult woman isn't hard to believe. If she's at the younger end of that range, then she might sneak in another centimeter or five to get her final height.

I'm really not a fan of the massive sharp makeup line along her jaw even on the base material, and the dance leotard really doesn't like to play nice with her crotch or smoothing options (at least on the dance sitting pose I ran into a lot of trouble trying to make it either actually cover her crotch or not take over her thigh) but otherwise yay?

was wondering about buying that leotard for my older ladies so if it don't fit TJ too well then there probably be a lot of poke through for them worse on Beth, emotions for TJ6 fits her perfectly though, pity looks reasonable dance outfit, what's the Friday Hair like? looks like a very nice hair and with a lot of movement morphs

I don't have any other Gen3 figures yet (was waiting for more content but a lot of it seems to be arriving now) but I tested on the base female with regular and pear shapes etc. and the leotard fit fine. It only seems to run into issues with some of the more extreme dance poses. In retrospect it's usually in places that won't really be visible (I was just rotating around checking everything at the time but I doubt you'd notice it in the sitting shot) so I'd say you'd be good to go.

I like the Friday hair so far. The morphs feel sort of simple and to the point? Fewer controls than my current favourite oot Zoey hair, but they do the things I want them to without much effort.

well guess like you said it depends on the angles and shots scene I can picture and it's not sexual before anyone gets that in their head is a angle shot looking up at the model leaping through the air above another character either in a graceful dance scene as something arty or angel or that scene from Evil Dead 2

so the hair looks like it offers more in the previews than it does but still good. Love the colours and looks soft . Would like to see some with morphs where the hair just flows hangs down whatever angle you pose the head/character like real hair would relise not really possible yet or least it'd be a nightmare for the creator to create so many morphs one day though maybe we'll get hair with fully posable auto flow hair, but this one still looks worthy from those promos
