tryin to work up energy to render on my dual core, 4gb pc.  watching 2 buckets not as exciting as 4.

One of my favourite art stories goes something like this:

Photographer Man Ray went to photograph Cluade Monet in Nice but left his camera lenses behind in Paris. He borrowed Monet's spectacles, popped out one of the lenses and taped it to his camera and took the shots. Afterward he said "the photographs turned out OK"

Moral is you don't need fancy equipment to make good pictures, is how you think about them that makes all the difference :)

What about cooling for all that? Is there a recommended method or you just suck and see? :)

...liquid cooling for the CPUs and a big case with 8 fans including a large exhaust fan by the GPUs. Was a difficult case to find as most have that useless window on the left side panel.

...yeah, that way a scene will render while I am working on it.  Mec4D has 2 Titan X's and her system almost renders in real time.

Doesn't look like cooling and cases are much changed the past few years, the Vista install I have has 8 fans is quite noisy. When the Apple trashcan gets going and especially when the D700s have been flat out for an hour or so it blows hot air like a fan heater. Compys that blow cool air would be real popular here laugh

I see the i7 CPU is still current after so many intel ticks and tocks, the i7 I got years ago has been very reliable I'll be sorry to retire it. The people who used to build for me have closed along with many many other small IT retailers, is difficult to find support here at reasonable prices. I guess a consideration for me is how much fan-rattling can I take while I'm working and how much hot air I can sit in on a hot daydevil Dunno whether another huge video card or two would make much difference to me I guess trace and bake texturing goes pretty fast but I actually like making materials, am devotee of most Node Cults and a couple of the Layer Cults as well cool

I want hardware that will render a scene before I make it enlightened

  • I decided to have an adventure trip and took a drive to my local BestBuy store (60 miles away in Erie, Pennsylvania) to see what they look like this year (obviously, I don't get out oftenfrown).  I noticed that they had expanded their computer display area but it was like 95% laptops and tablets but had only three rather anemic desktops on display. surprise  The times they are a-changin'. crying

Yeah, my BestBuy is the same... In general it seems now the only place to buy even semi-serious computers is online... Costco will occasionally have a decent i7 or Alienware machine out on display, but that's it... Its all tablets, laptops and i3s in the stores.  That and the the all-in-one machines our BB has... I never looked into one (well a windows unit) but the iMacs I've had ruined my opinion of that type of computer.  Then again for all I know they still may be more DYI than Mac... At least they have touchscreens, which Mac still hasn't added to their iMacs.

My stupid BestBuy has started selling 3D printers and drones in the store... Both crappy, none of them capable of printing a robot army or engaging hostile alien attackers...

They also built a "new technology pavilion" (I don't think it has a name, thats what I call it) it's a very Applish/JJ Abrams Enterprise looking area where they put on display all the new and mind blowing technology that I read about ten or fifteen years ago and get to finally see and touch it in person and revel in how lame and cheesy it has become since its conception...   "I have seen the future... And it's pretty stupid"

Sorry no,  YouTube videos can only be linked to, not embedded in this forum software.  However it is apparently possible to embed Vimeo videos.

Okay, thank you... It wasn't really important that one watch the video from the post, a link is good enough... It's funny, all the time that it was possible to do and I thought about asking how to do it, but instead put it off thinking "it'll probably be way easier next upgrade/change"...  Oh well.

I'm guessing this next question is more for Richard or Chohole...  In the freebies section, is it okay to point out free software, or do the freebies have to be strictly your own creation?   I came across an application (still early in development) that is for retopology of tris to quads... I'm pretty amazed by its control (you can make quick edits to the loop flow, both overall and in certain areas) speed and simplicity, but then again I'm pretty easily amazed by stuff like shiny bits of tinfoil and colorful beads (I line my nest with them)...  The kind of models I make, I usually don't need that for, so for all I know this might be useless, but I tried it on a couple of test models and it worked better than anything I've used before.

I figured it might be useful to folks who use programs that only output tris... I've heard it discussed a few times in relation to clothing.

Thanks in advance, for your response.

in a game I was playing I thought I bought some buckets of milk to make cheese but I bought buckets of sand by mistake.  I wonder how I can make cheese from sand?

    Boil it first.

Or use the Kobayashi Maru solution.  (i.e. change the rules of the game) indecision

Morning. A mob of very stout bright-necked turtledoves jostling and pecking on a sack or three of grain spilt across two lanes of freeway making for a real pastoral start to the day for the driver of an eighteen wheeler trying to inch its way past like a giant tip-toeing on eggshells :)

Am reasonably confident the changes will be good for business I think the availabilty of big rigs and people pirating pro software unfairly pushed prices down for freelancers in at least the lower end of the CG industry for a decade or so :)

It could be worse... You could have died and that is hell... I hear hell has a really bad DJ... But don't worry, you seem to be alive because I'm reading your post and as far as I know hell only has analog signal and no wifi.

I found a third pair of jeans in my closet the other day.  Thought I only had two pairs of jeans but actually have three.  Wish I had some money for Starbucks coffee right now.
