...I'm wondering if it it might not be the AV or Windows.  As I am not connected to the Net it probably cannot run certain diagnostics or in the case of Windows is not able to check if there are updates available so it keeps looking for a connection that isn't there. I would think though there would be some sort of message that it was unsuccessful.

When I try to stop the AV service in Task Manager it spits back,"The operation could not be completed." Not sure it would be a good idea to close the process for the AV in the Processes tab.

There also are about a dozen "svchost.exe" operations listed in the Processes window.  Usually there are only a few unless the AV is running a scan.

I may be able to configure and build a system, but when it comes to this kinds oif stuff I am like a blind person in a labyrinth.

I am able to open and run programmes, though I have to wait on everything and on occasion get the dreaded "not responding" message for a few moments. Once a programme opens it works fine with no perceptible lag. This to me says it's some sort of process that is causing this and not an issue with the drive itself.  Also whenever I shut the system down it displays a message for a few moments saying windows can't shut down because a programme or process is still running.

I am no geek squad alum, however I do notice when svchost is running, especially in herds the HD works overtime. Apparently there is a rootkit out there that is the cause, See quote below from answers.microsoft.com

Occasionally after windows automatically updates, my laptop will restart with abnormally high CPU usage. I checked my processes and found that "svchost.exe*32 - SYSTEM - winrscmde" appeared to be using most of the CPU.  When attempting to "Go to Service(s)" no service was highlighted.
As a last ditch effort in a long list of fixes I tried(including scanning my pc with multiple malware and virus detection programs, restarting the computer again and trying a manual fix I found in a forum somewhere else)

I simply chose svchost.exe*32, then clicked "Open file location" and double clicked the svchost application, opening a new svchost.exe*32 and ending the old process and it seems to have solved my problem for the time being, but I can't help but wonder what caused this problem in the first place?

[EDIT]:  I fixed my problem another way, apparently somehow a rootkit was causing the problem? It started out as a problem with all regular google sites, ads and services not being able to be displayed on my browser. I searched the web for answers and found that someone else had the exact same problem and used a combination of Rkill and TDSKill executable programs to stop malware processes and remove rootkits. I never thought of this before because i had no idea what a rootkit was.  After rebooting google worked fine and i found that the particular service host.exe file that had been causing me so much trouble was gone and not running, also my computer runs smoother than ever!

Didn't you say you'd somehow picked up a nasty a while back?

...not on the Workstation.  That was with the Notebook and on the old drive that died back in '09  Ran a MawareBytes scan last night and no items were found.

just for clarity svchost is a generic wrapper for persistent executables ie programs running in an infinite loop, or hopefully a thread in modern times, is not a reliable indicator of anything cos for example the indexing service might have an arbitrary number of processes running to index files so the presence of a service doesn't mean much by itself :)

Morning. A mess of white clouds looking for all the world like a fleet of flying saucers whizzing across an eggshell blue sky on the wings of a hot north wind :)

    ALIEN CLOUD SAUCER INVASION!!! surprisecrying

The night sky here has been a bit orangey from fires on the west coast (3000 miles away?) don't know which would be worse if it  got here first, fires or aliens laugh

    FIRE ALIENS!!! surprisesurpriseindecision

Is like an alien invasion ! Four dead overnight in the WA fires, the whole southwest is as dry as a bone Am expecting callouts to support the local volunteer brigades over Christmas, last year was cooler and started much quieter.

Wow, that's horrible!  I hope it doesn't get worse!!

...yeah when I right click  on them and then select "Go To Service(s)" it shows which services are involved. Most of them seem to be basic system utilities.

Morning. Warm night giving over to hot day with just a teasing breeze to cool tempers on the clagged-up freeway, or maybe not there is much honking coming from around a bend, hunkered down in the back seat of a taxi with a Bollywood song and dance number blaring from the substantial stereo system iz hard to tell what's going on, except nothing has moved for the past five minutes or so :)

my speakers are not working but I might have used headphones last night and forgot about them.  I would need to check to see if there are any plugged in which would cause my speakers to appear not to work.

Morning. A hang-onto-your-hat cool breeze off the bay stirring banners and treetops and half-masted flags to rustling life along the riverfront, upturning pedestrian faces with loud snaps and cracks and drumrolls echoing down the river toward the sea :)
