Then perhaps you should try an AMD or Motorola chip instead of Intel.

    Okay that might work.

What won't work is trying to play with Michael 7 when he is not installed.

Speaking of Intel I have to start thinking about a new windows compy, don't think Vista is on any upgrade paths for any of the software I use now, must be three versions behind? No idea what the current intel thing is at all meh why is stuff so complicated ?

...if you can, go for a Win7 "downgrade" (which is more of an "upgrade" compared to 8 and 10) unless you want Microsoft playing "Big Brother" and telling you they know what's better for your system than you do.

I see almost everything I can buy built has Win7 Pro x64 as an option but is only OEM version which means no Microsoft support as far as I can tell. Always happy to pay for support. I figure there must be some kind of vendor or 3rd party support for a prebuilt system but OS problems need support as well but from experience the premium you pay for vendor support never quite includes those lil Win OS gremlin things. Am rusted on 'nix person, Windows is wild and untamed and thar be tygers territory on the whole  imo laugh  Have you got a dream spec list ? Anyone got a dream spec list?  For example I need cores more than speed, RAM more than SSD's, io ports more than optical drives and heat management more than an app store :)

...I usually design and build my own systems rather than purchase "off the shelf".

My absolute dream system is a total beast (at a "beast" of a price as well, though far less than having someone else build it for me) However, it is built with rendering speed in mind It starts with dual 8 core Xeons, then 128 GB DDR4 quad channel memory (expandable to 1 TB), and has four  Nvidia Titan X GPUs with 12 GB Video Memory.  By then Nvidia may release consumer versions of it's Pascal architecture GPUs (projected to have 16 GB of HBM memory and 5,000 - 6,000 cores).

So that would be the Xeon E5 2640 v3 ? Is about the right speed for me. Four Channel RAM? That's one ram stick per slot x four slots so 32GB might be a reasonable outcome, 4 x 8 or maybe 4x16.  Can't find any ram sticks > 16 . FWIW I found 64 is a sweet spot, for my stuff anyhow, don't really want to cool 8 slots, I guess that's server grade stuff. Oh I see the Titan X cool. What's the latest in motherboards for those they look huge, 266 mm wow nearly a foot long Oscar Mike Golf so they will probably take up 2 slots worth of space.

...actually the Haswell 2630-v3 as as it uses the LGA 2011 socket (the only boards that support quad channel memory configuration)

There are several LGA 2011 server boards I've looked at that will support 4 Titan-Xs.

Concerning the memory I remember you once posted that one render job you did even brought your 64 bit Mac Pro to it's knees (lots of reflectivity I recall).  I like having overhead just in case the scene exceeds the Titan-X's 12 GB.With quad channel, the workload is spread more evenly among the memory sticks (one of the reasons I get decent rendering performance with my current system even though I have only 12 GB).  With 32 CPU cores if a process does dump from the GPU, at least I'll have decent base core speed.

What about cooling for all that? Is there a recommended method or you just suck and see? :)

tryin to work up energy to render on my dual core, 4gb pc.  watching 2 buckets not as exciting as 4.

Just a quick question to anyone who can answer this... I didn't want to start a whole thread asking and I think a few of you do it regularly here...

How do I attach a YouTube video, so it can be viewed in the post without actually leaving the page...?

It can still be done here right?... Anyway, thanks!

Sorry no,  YouTube videos can only be linked to, not embedded in this forum software.  However it is apparently possible to embed Vimeo videos.

No, having a suitable nVidia card will speed rendering but, as long as you give it long enough, the end result doesn't depend on having one. It may be that without an nVidia card the render will time-out before hitting the quality threshold, which would give a visual difference, but if you find that (the default is two hours) you can increase the Max Time setting in the progressive group in the Render Settings Editor tab.

nah you should be able to use CPU mode with a physical based renderer, What's in it for ppl is a simplified materials workflow bit you have a good grasp of materials anyhow :)

eta too early here for a rant but PBRs have a ways to go before they are production-ready for animation, noise is a big problem un noticed if you only render stills :)

There is a time when sun is below the horizon but still reflecting off clouds == twilight. There is a time when the sun is below clouds but above the horizon we (camera depts) call it the five o clock flash cos you get a couple of extra fstops at the end of a day's exteriors :)

Yes. (if you want h/w assist)

And neither do I.  Seems like a lot of trouble and expense but little gain for most people.
