Faceoff the developer for the Poser plugin took over after the original developer T3 abandoned it

Faceoff/Paul has been around since version 3 if I'm not mistaking, that's how long I've been around the forums at least. As long as he can recreate the issue you are having, issues do get solved and noted, he's been very responsive on that matter :)

he took over after I stopped using it,

yes 3 existed but I never moved past 2 I bought days before

not blaming or in any way angry at him as never participated in that D|S Otoy forum since T3 walked away, counted my losses and found alternatives

(in fact I feel sorry for him inheriting the then trainwreck)

this was probably 6-7 years ago

I have no issues now as the free tier is here heart

Well, this is a generous Freebie from DAZ & Valzheimer - I'm impressed with the direction DAZ seems to be moving of late: free bridge plugins and now a free kit to make using Octane easier. I did install the free Octane plugin months ago but gave up on it because it reminded me too much of the Reality experience - hours and hours spent converting materials. I'll be very keen to see how this kit performs. But for those of us who are not very experienced with Octane, could someone who is experienced explain the advantages over IRay please?

Awesome! Thank you @valzheimersmiley I have "OctaneRender for DazStudio Prime Version 5" installed. In DS it is 2020.1.0.55. It's currently disabled b/c it was causing delays in shutting down DS.

Is that the best version to use with your kit? Thanks!

Yep! That's the one I've been using too and the one the pack was actually made in :) As for the shutdown lag I think it's something Daz needs to look into, I was getting it when Octane was activated in plugins but ever since the upgfrade to 4.14 I'm getting the same thing with and without Octane. I'm not equipped to resolve that or to know for sure what's causing it (Otoy eventually said it's a Daz issue and not on their end), but is definetly the issue that can become annoying. Task Manager to the rescue, I hope we see the end of it eventually :)

Faceoff/Paul is great and knowledgable - the original guy was always busy with other stuff. And the original Octane developer ticked off quite a few people, but I think he's long gone, too. Does the free Octane we can use allow for the system RAM to be used along with the VRAM? I haven't used Octane in a very long time and this Daz plugin and valzheimer's hard work seems to have cured the problems of converting DS materials in Octane which was a pain. Octane has motion blur, too, if I recall.

Thanks a lot for the tips @valzheimer. I will have to take a look at the video.

Here are some other test renders I did. I have to say that I am really liking Octane Render much more than Iray. It also renders pretty fast.

Excellent presentation in Daz's YouTube channel.

I have to agree. She doesn't talk fast and goes over a lot.

  • After installing the Octane plugin starting an Iray render makes Daz unresponsive and the render-window all white?

Can the Octane Kit skin materials for G8 beused on G3?

  • After installing the Octane plugin starting an Iray render makes Daz unresponsive and the render-window all white?

If auto load of materials in Octane is checked it will work in the background trying to follow everything you have in the scene, regardless if you plan rendering it in Octane or not, and that can affect your memory if you don't have too much to spare. You can disable autoload to make this better, or if Octane is interferring too much you can temporarily disable the plugin right clicking on the tab and choosing disable.

    Hope that helps :)

Unfortunately I am missing the geek gene. What is the main difference in appearance of Octane from IRay? I’ve spent thousands of dollars on iRay shaders, lights, skins, etc... Will these be becoming obsolete?

    So many thanks Valzheimer !!

I'm using Octane since a long time (beta) and it's the only renderer I found who can manage big scenes with my 8 years old graphic card (gtx680-4Go) and with good performance.  I discovered I must buy a new one to run the last beta version (2020.2) the compute model 3 is not supported anymore. Surely a memory jump and RTX will change my life!

Shader is the most difficult part for me as I'm not a tech guy :-) . I'm sure I will learn so many things with analyzing your shaders !

Thanks again !  (now it's time to learn )

Here is my last project: tried to play with an outdoor scene and improve water.

Nope, nothing in Iray will be obsolete. :D Octane has been available for a long time, and you can do all this yourself as far as I know--these are just presets to make it easier for people to get started. Some people use it because they like the look of Octane better, or because it renders a bit faster than Iray.

Where do I find the free Octane plugin for DAZ?

    Thanks!

There should be a dropdown menu that says "Select Software." When you choose Octane for DAZ Studio it displays the plugin downloads. If you already did this and it's still not showing up you'll probably have to contact Octane support.

  • Ah, ok.  Thank you.

I found it in Shop / Try

Great! Looking forward to your video and this kit. I've told you more than once you are great at lighting, and your custom characters and skins are great too, so to have both in this kit and your Octane experience is awesome! On a side note, when Octane can work with instances in DS like those in UltraScenery, it will be even better!

Could some generous person please post a couple of side-by-side comparison renders showing the exact same scenes rendered with Iray and Octane?

Not sure how helpful is this considering it's from me, but I did this one during the tutorial/live on video that's included:

  • Can Octane be used for commercial purposes?  The T&C on OTOY say that any materials, etc., can only be used for personal use and not commercial use.

Check out Westworld,The Crow, Man in the Iron Castle and American Gods along with several other series where Octane was used in the rendering process. you can get very realistic scenes

I believe you're reading it wrong whereas "Material" refers in that case onto a software itself, that software cannot be redestributed without Otoy's permission and alike. At the bottom of the EULA you will find this part:

Permission is granted to anyone to use this software for any purpose, including commercial applications, and to alter it and redistribute it freely, subject to the following restrictions:

    1. The origin of this software must not be misrepresented; you must not claim that you wrote the original software. If you use this software in a product, an acknowledgment in the product documentation would be appreciated but is not required.

    2. Altered source versions must be plainly marked as such, and must not be misrepresented as being the original software.

    3. This notice may not be removed or altered from any source distribution.

So I believe it is free to say renders and animations rendered with Octane Render are safe to use for any purpose, personal & commercial.

This is relatively old but you can get decent renders from Octane.

    More videos from Daz

  • I just saw the others too, I believe that should be the whole tutorial now available on Youtube if I'm not mistaking, handy for those who don't want to download mp4s to their hard drives :)

  • I am a -huge- fan of Octane and have written several reviews, and even a few tutorials about Octane.

#1 - MUCH faster than Iray

I have used Octane for quite a bit before Iray came along. The relase of this Octane Kit gave me a push to try it again and I quite like what I see. The DAZ Plugin has made a lot of progress and the new kit is very helpful in getting things set up. Here is my first test. I used the kit materials on the Skin and Hair of the character, the rest is still auto conversion. Pretty nice for 5 minute setup and 20 min render time.

I will defintely play some more...

    Ciao

Who did the presentation?  I wish they would do all Daz Studio presentations.  It was well planned, well explained and wel presented.  Bravo!
