Octane Content in Sales Ticker

This crept in when logging in, https://www.daz3d.com/are-you-ready-for-octane with Filament coming out of left field, we now have what could be major in roads into Octane.. As one of the interesting products on that page is https://www.daz3d.com/octane-render-kit looks like we are being spoiled with render engine choices this year..

To use the octane stuff yes, but you can get a version of Octane now for free, just has a limit of 1 GPU and you have to be online to use it if I remember right..

Octane Prime version that the ORK package was built around is available for free at Otoy :) You just need to create a free account to download it: https://home.otoy.com/render/octane-render/demo/

Hope you like the kit ;) Cheers,

    V.

I have been casually interested in Octane for some time, but initially the cost was prohibitive, and having been an early adopter of the REALITY render engine and fiddling ENDLESSLY with materials I wasn't willing to go through all that again, but things may have changed...

    The Octane Render Kit says"

This product requires the OctanerRender Plugin Free Version Link Below.

    • OctaneRender Prime for Daz Studio

And the link leads to OTOY website where you need an account. I just now set up an account. You can skip the billing section (deal breaker if it hadn't allowed that) and after some noodling around found this:

You can Rent, Buy, or TRY. Under TRY, it specifically lists DAZ 3D and says:
      ___________________________________________________

      Product specifications:

    • Use of the software is available only while online, connected via the internet to the OctaneRender licensing server
    • Only a limited sub-set of plugins are available (see above)
    • OctaneRender Standalone is not available in the Prime tier
    • OctaneRender Offline USB Dongle is not supported
    • A maximum of 1 GPU is available for rendering
    • Network rendering is not available

      ___________________________________________________

I guess I'm going to give it a shot and see what the truth is. I hope this helps anyone unsure of what to do, where to go, or if they SHOULD.

Agreed, its an awsome kit. The only thing that stopps me from an instant buy is the current state of Studio and Octane, which will not fit well on my Mac

    • DAZ Studio 4.14 is not compatible with macOS 11 (BigSur)
    • Octane 2020 is (so far) only working on nvidia GPU's (no longer supported by Apple)
    • Octane X, supporting Macs only, with AMD GPU's is still in beta, and will ONLY support macOS 11

So, once all that obstacles are resolved (DAZ Studio working on macOS 11, Octane X plus DAZ Studio plugin releasedI), I will move that nice package from my wishlist to my shopping cart laugh

Btw, we might need a new section in the "3rd Party" space on this forum soon.

  • Worth noting, materials and lights and render settings may still work in Octane 4 (possibly version 3 too, I forgot what were all the changes made in between) in case you own that one or the new Prime 2020 one doesn't work for you.

Although mainly with shaders, newer shader nodes introduced in 2020/Prime (like Universal Material, SSS Randomwalk Medium and similar that weren't available before) were indeed used, but not in all of the presets, leaving enough room for folks with earlier versions to have a go at it as well. Granted it doesn't make entire pack compatible with older versions per se (nor is it advertised to be), but it won't be completely useless either :) That information may be useful to have in case you're interested, if needed I can check the presets for full statistics or tests as I own the Octane 4 OcDS on hand.

  • Same here. Once I saw the Promo on the home page I had hopes that Octane X for Mac would have been finally released.

But since unfortunately Octane Prime is still not available for Mac and there's no word from Otoy on the release of Octane X (although their page says out now in big letters on the home page) I think buying the Octane Render Kit as a Mac user does not make sense yet. Also I will rather wait to upgrade to BigSur until compatibility issues with studio etc. are resolved. So have this wishlisted for now.

I like it, but I can't seem to get the viewports working properly. I put the setting properly in DAZ and matched it in the settings in the Octane plugin, but it still wants to make it's own viewport size in both live and final render.

Here is a DAZ Octane test render I did.

  • Did the developer for the Octane plug in change?

I tried to use it about seven or eight years ago and found it was a mess. The developer didn't seem very interested in working on it and was very bad at commuinication. Turned me off from attempting to use it.

I am referring to the developer that made the Octane plug in for DAZ on the Octane site. It was a short screenname, 2-3 characters or so...

The main Octane site said the software was ready to go. So I invested ~$750 on it and couldn't get the thing to install or function. When I inquired about it I was told "it's not done yet," "it's just beta," and "I will finish it when I get around to finishing it."

The other people on the forum defended the developer saying something to the affect that he was "working on it for free" and "it was just his hobby."

After spending almost a grand on the software, that wasn't the support / communication I was expecting. I asked for a refund. The Octane store refused. I pointed to their misleading communication on the main site as compared to the forum. Then they refunded my purchase and removed the plug in from the main page.

Since then, I never went back or thought about it much.

There was a change in developer some years ago.

Ahh k, was not sure what you mean't by your post.. :) But yeah it does suck when you lay out a large wad of cash for a program, and find that one part of it does not work as advertised.. :( That is good that you did get your money back, and I too would be hesitant to go back to that site again..  And with that it has me wondering why the sudden generosity of the makers of Octane to have a somewhat free version..

  • No problem gents / ladies. I was just curious. I don't want to disparage the software if changes were made...  But I didn't want to go experimenting if the same people were involved.

And yeah, paying a premium price for (what appeared to be) an amateur product really jaded me.

I simplified the "getting my money back" adventure. It was a lot more of a headache involving screen capturing their sales pitches and putting them along side what the developer was saying.

  • So is this perhaps the answer for those of us that use gpu processing?

  • DamselDamsel Posts: 389

    Thanks for the answers!

Sure you don't mean CPU processing? If you use GPU processing, Iray should work fine and you won't need to redo materials and lights.

OTOY bought Octane in 2012, and OTOY is the company developing it currently.

Faceoff the developer for the Poser plugin took over after the original developer T3 abandoned it

Tugspx contributed to the original don't know if still actively involved

Val's kit looks awesome, one of the reasons I have disabled the plugin was the difficulty with converting everything

I may need to buy this once I have funds hopefully after Christmas yes

Yes, thank you Valzheimer for developing the product. And also many thanks to DAZ for provuding it for free.

  • ...and thanks to you Charlie for pointing that out. Was not free earlier (showed just the 51% a DAZ original does) so I would probably have missed it.

Yes, T3, that was the developer when I tried the plug in. I knew it was only a couple of characters, but couldn't remmber which. Glad to hear that its more stable now.

I was left very angry and unimpressed as were a few others

I had just purchased Or2DS when they then immeadiately updated it to 3 days later and wanted me to pay again and then a friend bought 3 and it didn't work with his card and they would not let him use 2

I never did update it, I bought the alembic exporter and used the standalone instead for D|S cheeky

I bought the Carrara plugin and loved it, great developer Sighman heart use it a lot but staying on 4 simply because I cannot afford subscriptions

yes installed this free tier and since I only have one card is sufficient, I have given OTOY far too much money over the years in upgrades (am on Octane 4 started with 2) and don't do subscriptions

Hey Richard, do check a thing. Dimensions are in the Render Settngs tab and make sure that your icon in the viewport on the top is set to an image, not the arrow, also that your Camera doesn't have local dimensions on. I explain settings and also how to resolve some common obstacles in the video included in the pack too so that may be helpful :)

Faceoff/Paul has been around since version 3 if I'm not mistaking, that's how long I've been around the forums at least. As long as he can recreate the issue you are having, issues do get solved and noted, he's been very responsive on that matter :)
