Complaint-ish: I think I've made a mistake.
Up to now I've been totally ignorant of the people, places, things, and plot(s) of "Game of Thrones". But two days ago I opted to get a 7-day free trial of HBO entertainment streaming for my TV so that I could watch a couple of recent movies that I missed at the theater. However, quite out of curiosity, I have also worked my way up to episode 4 of season 1 of "Game of Thrones". But realizing that there have been 8 seasons for a total of nearly 80 current episodes and yet another season to go, I'm afraid I've been infected with GOT-fever.
So, come next Saturday I either need to quit HBO and GOT cold-turkey or sacrifice something else to cover the $15/month required to feed my GOT-fever.
Egads! I'm now one of those people who knows who "Jon Snow" is. I'm tainted for life.
Apparently it is still up right now, so I am trying to make sure I got everything downloaded.
Does your public library have previous seasons on DVD? Our library has some older HBO shows on DVD, but I don't know about GOT.
Had to test to see if the law of gravity still enforced in my room as I knocked over my remote and saw it fall to the ground.
complaint; using the tv as an external monitor means I can either watch tv or use it as a monitor. So I am watching tv while my computer updates.
You see the flying devil monkeys too? I thought it was just me...
...never seen one episode of Game of Thrones. From what I gathered through hearing others talk about it, sounded like a medieval soap opera.
From the four episodes I've seen so far, it's a battle royal between multiple kingdoms (3 or 4 so far, but I believe 7 in total) with good guys, bad guys, really bad guys, and equally if not moreso treacherous women. Murder, mayhem, treason, unrelenting weather, wild people, barbarians, non-people people, vicious animals, and dragons. All set in a medieval period that has been stagnant technologically for thousands of years. Totally believable if you're an 8 year old. But the blood, guts, gore, gluttony, pride, arrogance, lust, envy, wrath, and sloth are what keep our interest. A perfect mirror to mankind's foibles.
Yeah, a soap opera on steroids.
Left side of face is still numb. I can't talk good. I might call the doctor's office tomorrow for advice.
I am not hungry but I have the desire to munch, so not really hungry but I got the munchies. 0.o
I made the mistake of ordering a couple of the books. I don't have a TV but do read a lot. My first impressions was that I couldn't understand why anyone would think the Author was good enough to write a book that couls be used as a screen play. The 2nd impresiions was that, as you say, the books were written by, for and about chidren. Then a bit later on I decided I could not understand how they had made it into a series for prime time TV if they are using the books as written. Apart from the abysmal writing skills he takes the story way beyond what is normally acceptable, especially given that so many of the main characters are well below normal age of consent. And we won't mention how allowable incest is (oh dear I just did) Children just into their teens running their own kingdoms, without a Steward or guardian to guide them. Heck even Jon Snow was only 14 in the books. I have to assume that the characters have been aged up to make the TV series pass the censors.
The books are now in the pile to go to the charity shop, although I am not certain it is charitable to even give them away, they are so bad.
I did not get the physical books but I got the kindle version of the first one I think not the others. I have not read it yet other than the first chapter. I am stuck on the first chapter of the book.
edit: correction the prolog
I have several hundred books and have read probably twice as many others and I have have never come across a book written in this style. It's almost as though he has sent his precis of how the characters are going to be rather than actually written the chapters.
Have you ever read the Wheel of Time series? Or has anyone else here made it through all the books?
Back to GoT for a moment, apparently the author has explained that the story is actually set in the far future, and that the humans of the Seven Kingdoms are descendants of settlers from Earth, who basically crash-landed. Their new planet was hit by an astroid that knocked its orbit out of whack, and it still hasn't stabilised, hence the extremely long years and random seasons. As for GRRM's writing style, he uses accessible language, as inclusiveness advocates would call it. The main reason most people don't take to Fantasy, seems to be that the language is too stuffy. And that's bad, because of classism and ableism and stuff. But eh, I still think everyone should be allowed to like or dislike any writer's style, and not be a bad person for it.
Yes I have the complete Wheel of time and have read it through several times. There were a couple of gaps you see, so it was best to read the previous books before reading the new ones, to remind oneself what had happened before. In fact when I was waiting for "A Memory of Light" I got so eager that I bought the Hardback version, whereas I normally buy paper backs as they are a lot cheaper. I just wasn't going to wait another year before the paperback came out, we had waited long enough already to get to an ending.
It was not the ending. There are no endings , and never will be endings, to the turning of the Wheel of Time.
And you will never change my mind about the chappy who attempted to write the GOT books. I can honestly say that it is the first time I have given up on a series part way through and thrown the books out. Normally I struggle with trying to sort out some books to pass on so I can make room for some new ones
I've only worked through a long series of books a few times. I read the first half dozen books of the "Dune" series, up through "Chapterhouse Dune" but didn't continue the others not written by Frank Herbert. I also read many of the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind beginning with "Wizard's First Rule" and ending with "Confessor" by which time I was fed up with the snail pace of story line and the incessant preaching. The story (belaboredly) had come to a satisfactory ending point and was running out of steam. I also read all of Azimov's "Foundation" series. I have very little interest in fiction these days. Whether in print or by video. Preferring instead documentaries, histories, biographies, real reality shows, or scientific books & discussions. At this point in my life there is no point in delving into fantasy. I find reality so much more interesting.
I believe my fascination with "Game of Thrones" is curiosity to see how far over the top and tasteless it will get. I suspect I'll probably just end up watching most of the 1st season then skipping to five minutes in the middle and the last five minutes of each show and bingeing the entire rest of the series that way because that's where all the shockers are. All the rest of it seems to be just programmatic filler. Then I can terminate my free trial access to HBO and be done with it for another year.
I've read Wheel of Time a few times most of the Dune series ,I read the first 4 books of Game of Thrones but gave up waiting for the next ones ...... got caught up in Jeanneie Frost books ,and Black Dagger Brotherhood instead ........

it isnae healthy to live in constant fear. completely powerless against the irrational and ferris wheels
Sounds like Game of Thrones is one more move in the game to dumb down America...and attempting to take the rest of the world with us. It is, unfortunately, what the people want...mindless "entertainment". I'm glad I don't have HBO, now. They used to produce some quality stuff.

Saw a couple of GOT episodes. My brother was watching it, he'd read the books. I thought it sucked (don't tell him).
I found out it is hard to hide guppies in a 55 gallon aquarium as they keep swimming in the open while mating. Also a 55 gallon aquarium is hard to hide too.
It is however, easier than going to the coloseum, and you don't have to sit in the sun all day waiting for the blood, it comes about every 35 minutes. Plus you get to see who's f'ng who in the interim.
Non-complaint: I mentioned liking real reality shows, there's a series of clips on YouTube called "Stop a Douchebag". It originates from Russia and is in Russian with English sub-titles. It's a Russian youth movement to shame traffic offenders who drive and park on pedestrian sidewalks which seems to be a rampant situation over there. Some of the offenders get a bit too defensive (and that's putting it mildly) and sometimes will draw guns or tire irons. But the group tries to remain non-violent yet immoveable from the walk. When someone won't comply they stick a large sticker on the passsenger side windshield. The sticker says (in Russian), "I Spit On Everyone, I drive where I want". If the offender continues to refuse to leave the sidewalk they paste a sticker over the driver side windshield. Attempts to quickly tear the sticker from the glass only succeeds in raggedly tearing about 10% of it. The police are sometimes called, either by the offenders or the youth group, and usually convince the offenders to leave but sometimes issuing tickets or carting the offender and or a couple members of the group to the station to make formal complaints. The most vocal offenders are (you guessed it) entitled women. The most violent offenders are (you guessed it) thuggish men.
