PThe history of comics (and their adaptations) is long and complicated.  After 'Superman' was a hit in 1939, Fawcett Comics created a new character, Captain Marvel, who was summoned when newsboy Billy Batson uttered the word 'Shazam', an acronym of Solomon/Hercules/Atlas/Zeus/Achilles/Mercury, and also the name of the wizard who gave him this power.  It actually outsold Superman back in the day, and grew several other 'Marvel' characters (Captain Marvel, Jr., Mary Marvel, and later the non-powered Uncle Marvel and others).  Fawcett stopped publishing in 1953, partly because of the overall decline in superhero titles, and partly because DC comics had ongoing legal action claiming the character was a knockoff of Superman.  While the 'Captain Marvel' trademark was inactive, Marvel comics created a 'Captain Marvel' character and grabbed the trademark.  Because of this trademark, DC (when they licensed the Marvel family from Fawcett in 1972) branded the character's book with 'Shazam' instead of 'Captain Marvel'.  Actually, within the 'Shazam' comic, Captain Marvel still kept his character name until 2011; now he is 'Shazam'.  But most people still think of the big red cheese character as 'Captain Marvel' anyway, adding to everyone's confusion.  Meanwhile, Marvel's Captain Marvel has gone through half a dozen different characters over the years who have called themselves 'Captain Marvel'.  The current Captain Marvel, according to Wikipedia, is Carol Danvers, formerly Ms Marvel.

Most of the original Captain Marvel titles are in the public domain and can be viewed online.

Okay... You just explained why he's called Shazam... Sorry, I must have skipped over your post... Thank you for putting it perspective.

I was going to go with a far less rational narrative...

Which was that in 1948 at the age of eight, he (Captain Marvel) accidentally consumed a box of laundry detergent (Shazam! brand detergent) which he mistook for breakfast cereal... The box of detergent contained the ground up remains of a powerful alien necromancer who was somehow buried in a borox deposit, which was eventually mined and used to make the detergent Billy consumed... His name was Billy... I'm assuming in the 40s most boys were named Billy... Anyway... The detergent killed Billy instantly, but luckily his pajamas were washed in the same detergent and when he keeled over into his bowl of detergent, his tongue was sticking out and went right into the toaster... The combination of electricity and radioactive milk (which came from a radioactive super cow) negated the evil powers of the alien necromancer, turning the powers to good... Also the electricity shocked Billy back to life.  Billy then took the name of the detergent as his superhero name: SHAZAM (which stood for Soft Healthy Amazingly Zestful And Magnificent).

In retrospect it's probably not worse than what the TV show was about, since kids Saturday morning TV shows at that time were pretty terrible.

    Anyway thanks for the info!

...yes, in the comics, Carol Danvers AKA "Ms. Marvel" became Captian Marvel.

Not to be confused with "Marvel Girl" which was the original character name for Jean Grey of the X-Men before the Pheonix transformation

Or Linda Danvers, Supergirl's secret identity (DC Comics).

I thought I choose free shipping for an Amazon order of fish food and catnip.  I apparently did same day delivery. Now I am short about six dollars for shipping of fish food and catnip.  I do not need either that bad or urgently.

At least your fish don't queue up at the door when the man comes to deliver their food like my cats do. I use a small company for most of the cat food, and they use a delivery company that uses the same courier each time, and there is only one driver that delivers to our village.  SO when the cats see him pull up outside they wait at the door for the parcel, because chances are it could be for them,  and have a new box and food and treats as well.

The cat will approve of your choice... Is this cat nip for medical or recreational use?

Nip addiction is a serious problem with cats worldwide... Every day thousands of cats are strung out on nip, stealing cars and robbing people to support their adorable habit... Please be careful and monitor your cat's nip usage and make sure you know the signs of addiction.

1- Sweaty paws and shifty eyes.

2- Disappearing for long stretches of time.

3- Sleeping more than 20 hours a day.

4- Appliances and valuables disappearing from the home.

5- Strange cats or other animals showing up at odd hours of the night.

6- Police making inquiries as to the availability and location of the feline in question.

    7- Peculiar behavior.

Be vigilant and don't let your cat become another statistic.

Neither, it is too make sure they keep scratching their scratching post not the furniture.

The home’s fire alarm is going off loudly when there is no fire.

I no longer think my external monitor just died because I know it does.  I hope I do get that tv for Christmas which means in two weeks I get it, hopefully.

Is it called evesdroping when you are in the same room as someone on the phone?  I did not hear the other end of the conversation but I heard one end.  I assumed from what I heard that I would be getting a tv.  Not sure which size but pretty sure it will not be a jumbotron from what I heard.  Hopefully I will see it under the tree in two weeks.  Of course the the tree has not been purchased yet.  and of course the tree and hopefully the tv will be at my mum's house.

...see if you can qualify for low income/disabled housing assistance. Mention that you are having trouble managing stairs and have your personal physician as well as your advocate go the bat for you.

Portland OR where I live is pretty much the same, when it comes to housing prices.

I'm sure this isn't helpful, and it's not something you are unaware of, but I figure it never hurts to mention... East and South of the Huntington area rents are a bit cheaper... That's kinda why I live on the south shore... The north was way too expensive to purchase a home... Even 20+ years ago in a buyers market.  I don't know all your requirements, and transportation and walker access are obviously important. I only mention this because friends who were looking for apartments in Suffolk found better rents in those areas... But, they had different criteria.

Either way... Sorry, you are going through this... Good luck.

..here in Portland we have an association called "Home Forward" that certifies  and lists rentals for those on a low or fixed income as well as with disabilities.  That is how I found my place (which has three lifts so I don't need to deal with stars). There should be something similar in the area where you live.  Best way is to Google "low income and/or disabled housing" in your area and see what comes up.

"Market level" rents, which is what you are seeing by looking at classified rental listings, are way out of line with what we can afford.  Low income places usually don't advertise in the classifieds.  Oh, and stay away from Craigs' List.

They have a lovely expression in the UK,  which is  "Affordable Rent"      Every time I see it I think   "but all rent should be affordable"

Yes its a phrase that I find funny, even 'affordable' rents in some places aren't affordable for some, my rent is a little bit under the average for the area but is still a good 60-70% of my income.

  • kyoto kidkyoto kid Posts: 41,925

    ...exactly.

Half of my monthly pension cheque just goes to rent alone (in what is considered "affordable hosuing") but it's better than sleeping in a doorway or under an overpass as market rents here are something like an extra 60% to 100% above my monthly benefit.

  • I'm back.  I've been DAZzing much of the day trying to unscramble what I did to one of my scenes.  Finally gave up and recreated it.  Also listening to radio and my audio library.

Ran across a quick little piece (3:40) sometimes used as an encore piece at symphonies when not played in its original place within the complete suite.  The small piece is "Procession of the Sardar" It's a quick little piece kind of rhythmic, zippy and refreshing tune.  Lots of flute, piccolo, horns and drums.  Try to sit still while listening to this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MueWVRMFodk

It's just one of four pieces from the "Caucasian Sketches" suite #1 by Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov.
