...I miss travelling by train.  Sadly it's become too expensive for long overnight trips as rooms are have become ridiculously overpriced.  Can't sleep sitting up anymore.

Such a relaxing way to travel though. Not long security lines or TSA to deal with, no restrictions on what I can and cannot take on board with me, I can get up and walk around, get a beer in the club car, watch teh scenery roll by, and not have to worry about my luggage ending up in someplace else than my destination.

Sadly, for say a trip to say, Milwaukee, First Class air is about half the price.

I think I hear a train.  Not sure if it is mine or not.  I am traveling by coach, not in a private room.  Not looking forward to sleeping like that.

I slept on a train in coach.  Though the train was not in England, it was good.

Non-complaint:  With travel an impossibility today I busied myself by examing another upcoming on-line auction catalog.  Yeah, I know... shame on me. blush  And although I found a couple items under $50 I also found a nice pair of chairs in the same auction with a starting bid of $8,000,000 Yes, eight million dollars. surprise https://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/65956730_a-pr-ming-dynasty-imperial-horse-back-huanghauli-chairs  or you could try to get the white stem cup with a starting bid of only a half-million. frown  At those prices they should charge just for looking. devil

    ...

Frederic Chopin's performed on Erards (paticularly during his concerts in London) and considered them more "forgiving" than those made by Pleyel (which he usually preferred) claiming the sound was always more beautiful.

For a pianist it's interesting how much difference there is in piano manufacturers.  Acoustic Yamahas have a bright brilliant sound, Chickering are soft and muted,  Baldwins are somewhere in the middle.  Steinways are clear and reverberant with a beautiful silky touch in the keys.  And for professional pianists the differences within the same manufacturer is even more subtle and agonizing.  They'll sometimes shop at the Steinway showroom trying instrument after instrument until they find a piano with a particular sound and feel that has the perfect sound & touch for a particular piece for a concert and rent that piano for the evening.

    ..exactly.

My favourite Steinway of all was one my old college in Wisconsin had in the choir rehearsal room. It was built in 1928, donated to the college 5 years later for use by visiting artists and student recitals.  When the new Fine Arts centre was built in 1971, it was moved from the Auditorium in Old Main to it's then current location and two new Steinways were purchased for the Recital hall, one for the Arts and Lectures series (which oversaw guest artist performances) and another for student recitals and concerts.  These two both had rather "stiff" (heavy) actions which is more desirable in a practise rather than performance instrument. They were also "too new" in that they hadn't quite been "broken in" yet so the tone was al little bit on the bright side  in the mid to upper registers (not as much so as a Yamaha, Kawai, or Baldwin) though the bass still had that characteristic dep "Steinway rumble".

The old instrument still had ivory key covers and natural ebony accidentals. It had that "silky smooth" touch mentioned and a lovely warm, yet reverberant tone with an assertive but not over dominant bass.  The one flaw, the room it was in had an extremely dry climate which resulted in a crack developing in the pinblock that affected tuning stability.  It would stay in pitch for a few weeks after tuning but slowly slip and need to be "chipped" back to pitch again. This became "my Steinway" as in the evening when the room wasn't used for small ensemble or choir rehearsals, it was open for general practise. I often was allowed to stay while the custodial crew attended do their duties after building hours.(between 10:30 and midnight).  I had so come to prefer the instrument over the two newer ones in the recital hall, that I would request it moved there for my performances (I even offered to bring it to pitch afterwards as I had studied piano tuning and maintenance).

Sadly being in that room was effectively killing this instrument. When I came into a small windfall I had it appraised and went to the college admin with an offer to purchase it.  The college tuned me down as the instrument was donated and therefore could not be sold (I was told if they "retired the old piano, it would have to be be destroyed under an odd state property law, which I felt was a travesty).  I even entertained the idea of "liberating" the instrument by getting together with a couple friends renting a moving van, and leaving a prepaid cashier's check for the appraised value on the floor of the room behind (of course the college would have a good idea of who did it).  Fortunately there were others in the department who had similar feelings and affections for the old Steinway who I knew.  We petitioned the college to save the piano from further demise, and impressed on the administration that it was a piece of history, not just for the college, but in its own right which needed to be restored and well cared for.  The college relented, brought in a couple piano technicians who replaced the pinblock, restrung the instrument, and performed other needed maintenance (sadly the ivory surfaces of the keys were replaced, but a small price for saving this otherwise wonderful instrument).  The college also put in a climate control system to balance the humidity (which also improved conditions in the room for singers as well), so all in all, a happy ending.

Tonight I travel by train to Florida to see my Daddy’s two furry friends Oliver and Penelope.

Nice    are they cat type furry friends?     My brother and I had a kitty we called Oliver when we were young.  We called him Oliver because he kept asking for more.

Complaint: Newsletter says "Get a free puppy!"  But nowhere is there any details.  Is it really free, or is it a bonus if you buy something?  Is it Puppy 8 or Mil Puppy (which I already have)?  Banner says "Details Here", but there is nothing on the page that leads to about the puppy.  Nothing!  no

i went to the disability eval dr
my blood pressure was high. 200 over something
she insisted on calling an ambulance

a nurse tells me i should talk to the psych eval person
cause i was feeling down about being in hospital again
as a result, they decided i was suicidal, no matter how much i told them i wasnt

theres a thing i didnt know about in the usa health system
they can keep you "involuntary" (they called it protocol)
as in, you arent allowed to check out of the hospital against medical advice.
    found out the hard way
i'm upset i wasnt informed of this by the nurse or psyche person before talking

i had to contact a patient advocate lawyer to file a court hearing.
i had a 50/50 chance od being discharged.
lawyer said they hate going to court cause it costs them money.

you should have seen her, she was just like marissa tormay in my cousin vinny, looked like her too
i have a serious case of hero worship

anyway, they discharged me the morning of what was supposed to be the hearing.

miss kulay might be interested in advocate system, they are there to help our most vulnerable
lawyer said, hospitals dont always do what they should
