What's a geo-shell? And how do you make one?

    David

It's short for Geometry Shell. It creates a duplicate 'skin' with all the same material zones as the original figure, parented to the figure. You can control the offset so you can have it close to the figure or further away. You can turn off visibility on all the parts the figure has, plus use the mat zones for any combination of transparency or textures you want.

To create one, you slect your figure then go to the Menu > Create > Geometry Shell. It defaults to a white shell set at 50% opacity.

  • Cool. That'll make adding body hair to some characters a lot more realistic.

I'm just starting to try some superhero work. This is the Ultra Catsuit with a shiny leather texture, paired with the Exnem dual holsters. I want to sub out the pistols for something more exotic, and I'll have to eventually research how to change an existing prop for that. Failing that, customize a prop and go look up how to save that as a seperate new object.

My biggest problem so far has been finding a mask that can fit close to the face and conform to expressions. The Ultra Cowl from the catsuit does that better than anything else I've found so far, but it still wigs out when an expression involves anything with the foreheard or some eyebrow changes. So far, I've found nothing else that works with Gen2.

Have you considered using a geo-shell of your main figure and making your own mask texture map and transparency map? You're guaranteed it will conform if you do that.

Well, that would be the next step, to simply make my own masks. I haven't done anything like that yet, and I don't have photoshop or other things to let me make things like bump maps and such. At some point I might try to tackle this, though.

A geo-shell, if I remember correctly, is a blank-slate figure that duplicates the figure you want to use? I've seen the suggestion before in other discussions.

There is a free program called GIMP that is very similar to Photoshop. Depending on what figure you are using, you may be able to find some free second-skin overlays people have made and shared on Deviant Art or Share CG. I know I used to see ones for V3, M3, V4 & M4.

One of the nice things about using a geo shell with the Genesis figures is that your shell doesn't have to use the same UV set as the parent. So if you're using Genesis with an M5 skin texture but have a great second skin that is a V4 map, you can use that on the shell ith no problems.

If you own Jepe's body hair or body jewels sets, they use the geo-shell idea.

  • Also of note:  geometry shells applied to figures with geografting include the grafts in their shell figures.

    Playing with different masks

Sux trying to get hair working with the mask....and even when I was done I still had to render twice (once with hair and once without) and blend it together.

  • In case anyone hasn't seen yet, MightyMite has been busy over at Renderosity with a bunch of hero poses (https://www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/?uid=638475). He has them grouped by theme and character type, and there are a lot to choose from. I've chatted briefly with him and he has plans for lots more pose sets. Definitely worth taking a look!

I've been eyeballing those sets myself, I'm just grateful that they are male poses. I wonder if he will expand to make a genesis series?

I've been using cridgit's Posemaster (https://www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/?uid=765127) to convert the files I've purchased. It seems to work pretty well!

Terrymcg has dropped his latest creation on his DeviantArt page, a rendition of the Supergirl costume as worn on TV by Melissa Benoist. I threw together a quick render to show it off...

Nice! I saw that and was thinking about getting it. I sure wish Terry would start supporting genesis figures. He does great work and I understand that tools and knowledge will have to change some to move forward, but I am willing to support the change and buy a few outfits.

I use his V4 outfits on genesis and genesis two, but for some reason the mesh goes all wonky when smoothing modifiers are applied.

Cobra Commander re-imagined as more of a a capable and deadly Super-Villain.

I've been trying to learn how to make clothing for Genesis 3 Male and thought Cobra Commander would be cool to learn with.

Meant to comment days ago, sorry for the delay; great shot, you've really nailed the look and the characters.

Glad you did, they look great! I especially like the "feel" of the renders, very airbrushed-comic bookish. My personal taste would be to dial back the female nipples a little, and maybe a bit of Supergirl's makeup, but again, that's my personal taste, and the amount that's there is pretty minor.

Thanks for sharing, I'm really looking forward to more.

Thanx, was not really planning on doing a full render, picked up the sci-fi lab and got wondering if i could paint it up like a 1940s style rather than a futuristic one. I set a lot of my stuff during WWII. I want to do a whole series of WWII era Captain America stuff. Any way as I was working on painting the lab I remembered i had an Adolf Hitler morph for M4. The cryo-chamber tube thing got me thinking, what if Red Skull and Hydra had gotten hold of Hitler's body and were trying to revive him or something. No idea if they ever tried something like that in the comics, but it felt like a very Hydra sort of thing to do. And so this scene kind of accidently grew out of doing test renders of my paints

Love all of your takes, as they mostly look classic, esp Supergirl, not that silly "sexy" outfit they gave her years back.  Batgirl looks a little... off to me.  can't put my finger on it.  Love Power Girl, she's got that look she had in All Star Comics featuring the JSA!

Thanks for the compliment! My style was definitely intented to be a bit comic-book illustrated looking. I figured I'd leave the ultra-realistic 3D stuff to the pros!

Thank you! I try to stick with the originals, the costumes I grew up loving from the very comic pages. Batgirls color scheme probably seems off. It was a bit of an experiment. I guess it failed?

Credit for some of the costumes goes to the original creators such as terrymcg and joequick

I think the yellow is a bit too dulled down is what I'm kinda putting my finger on and the boots look a bit puffy.  Perhaps the main bodysuit a tad darker gray?

The color scheme for Batgirl was based on some fanart that I saw of her last year. Sort of a cross between Batgirl and Batman. You are right about the yellow/gold, though. It needs to have a bit more sheen to it.
