I could see Ollie mixed for a character actor in the roles often filled by Ewen Bremner (the actor who played Charlie in Wonder Woman)

Help, help!  I am being quoted for something I didn't write.  LOL.

I merely gave a +1 to DivasMakeup observation that Ollie is great for fantasy renders.

But somehow the forum software is quoting me as wondering about the activities of Nursoda.  I wonder no such thing.  I do wish Nursoda well, but I don't wonder about Daz roping in Nursoda.  Wonder what gives.

No idea how that happened, I hit the "Quote" button next to JOdel's comment and it got the quote correct but the source wrong; I'm sorry I didn't notice that before posting.

I don't mind if Daz does different things, and Ollie certainly is different. But these sort of characters should be much later down the pipe. Where on earth are the Asian characters? And don't anyone even dare say Aiko has anything to do with Asian.

This...^ But this is an example of priorities...

I think both rendo and Daz have had a lot of individual Asian characters and morphs hit the market. It would be awesome to see pro bundles of other nationalities, Asian, middle eastern, Russian, etc. until then I use the g2 and g3 versions. And quite by accident I’ve recently  become enamored with v4 because she fills gaps that g8 hasn’t touched yet.

Its more about representation. The Daz Original line is their premiere lineup and always gets top billing for a full two weeks. And they frequently get featured for years on end in other promotions. Not seeing other ethnicity in these lineups is getting old. Waiting until the second half of Genesis 8's life cycle for these characters is not cool, not cool at all. And its a bit degrading to have some sprinkled as "add on" products for other 8 characters. IMO, that's effectively like having the token ethnic side character in other media. Instead, we get Ollie. And sure, I'm fine with Ollie existing. But before Mei Lin or Lee??? Or what about a more Latino character? Come on. What kind of signal does that send?

My guess is that Daz's priorities are already set with market conventions, much like the majority of tech/geek culture/entertainment...Their primary demographics are not the black and brown ethnicities, as they are mostly secondary, much like it is with television/movies if it were not for push back against under/misrepresentation of ethnics there would not be any as there are simply not enough black and brown people as PAs/customers...But that is changing thanks to millenials!

That's how this nation has always been...Asians are fortunate enough as they have already represented themselves well enough in their own countries within tech/geek culture; which is why there's not as loud a protest as much as there are for blacks as they historically had a much more shadowed past with this nation...

The only solution for now is to look to PAs as they are the ones who actually do a much better job at representation, so I would not rely on daz for this, but to be fair they're trying as they've been much better than in the past as the 5th generation has really been the one where they started to develop different ethnicities...But yeah, your concerns are valid and you should always communicate them!

I would like if something like SY'd Faces of ... was integrated as morphs in the G8F & G8M freebies. That might be giving away too many sales though.

I got the starter bundle and the "Creepy Kid" sort of character by Josh and the loincloth collection.  ZBrush is there in case I want to use him full on and need that nose of his more normal in size.  They could really build allot on this base for other packs like a nose options pack!  lol

Theres a morph included to make the nose smaller.

Oh goodie Thanks.  Don't have the packs installed yet!

My thoughts exactly. Daz has gotten better insofar as representation goes... but that's not really saying much, since they started to do an awesome job with Genesis 3 and then have fallen hard off the wagon with Genesis 8 thus far. No, Aiko and Sakura don't count.

The best advice is to support the PAs that actually go the distance and make diverse characters, and ones that aren't Michael and Victoria with a light spray tan.

That said... why they couldn't put a non-white character in the Ollie bundle is beyond me, but they've been pretty bad with that the last couple of bundles. XP

Are the head and body morphs separate for Ollie?  The product page doesn't say.  I really dislike characters which don't have them separated out.

Head, Body, Ears & Nose are all adjustable separately.

    !!!

This is why products need to start having complete "What's Included" lists.

Agreed.  How much more room would the product page suffer with this little and important tidbit of info added to it?  LOL

I purchased Ollie but DAZ Studio is not updating my Smart Content to let me install. In fact, there are three recent purchases that won't appear .. UGH

    Anyone else experiencing this?

@wsterdan - yeah, I realized it was a forum glitch of some kind.  And no harm, no foul, in any case.

I think Ollie is fantastic! To me he's pretty much a "must have" for anyone who's even considering doing fantasy art. :) I can totally see him as Ichabod Crane, an old wizard, a house elf, or any number of fantasy type characters. :)

LOL...Ichabod Crane was the first character I thought of when I laid eyes on this one. I won't even assume how old you are, but that makes ME feel really, really old. LMAO.

    Laurie

The more I look at him, the more I see lots of potential.  I am thinking with the right morphs he might make for a good Dobbie even.  LOL

  • I like him and I was kinda right in my guessing of what he'd be like and Chohole may come after me and wack me with her stick for saying this but he does have the classic British look. He reminds of Wilfrid Brambell from Steptoe and Son, and other Brit actors such as in the Carry On Movies and many other tv shows and movies.oh and Mr Bean.  Has a lot of potential he could be in the old streets of London or around the WW1/2 times and depression, in a village/castle, as a mad scientist  or assistant, grave digger or character from the old horror comics/movies, as a background character scifi like Star Wars or Doctor Who, as a Marvel or DC Villian put some weight on him he could be Penquin as is could be Beast Boy or Dr. Thaddeus Sivana and again so many others and of course various fantasy characters

  • Ollie 8 Characters Side-by-Side - No postwork (besides adding names). Lighting is from Ultra Genesis Studio.

I'm mildly bemused at the lack of the page showing the morph mixes with other base characters. Those were becoming fairly standard and they are *useful*. My only suspicion is that at 50% of Ollie, you only see Ollie in the mix. But from Divamakeup's example, he clearly mixes very well.

As for out of the box; the issue with Toons is getting them to play well with other Toons from different artists. Ollie looks like he might work fairly well with some of 3DU's cast of characters. I agree that the face does remind me of Billy, but the body type isn't anywhere near as stylized. D Master's figures are splendid in themselves, but they don't necessarily play well with others.

I'm extremely happy with this release, I have a project pending that I was thinking of doing in at least a modified Toon style, and Ollie is right up the alley (or garden path) that I was leading to.

To each his own, I guess - I bought the bundle precisely because it wasn't a G8 flavored re-release of a character I already own several generations of. Like others, he reminds me of a Nursoda creation (which is a huge compliment), only more useful because he's based on G8M so he can wear other's clothing and take part in my forbidden gene pool experiments.

Was also swayed since Josh's Glumgurgle was included in the bundle, which is something I would have picked up for sure. And oh yeah, I got the Darius 7 Pro Bundle, too.

Anyway, here's Ollie borrowing some clothes from 3DU's Mythical Pixie:

  • I like the character on the sales page, with the bushy hair and beard, it almost reminds me of a older animated version of Hugh Jackman. Which hair and beard product is this?

Actually, G8 seems to be getting well more than the typical serving of stylized and Toon characters, and it's getting them early.

Some generations *do* seem to get a lot of stylized or Toon characters, and others go by with barely more than that generation's iteration of the classic official name brands.

Giving Ollie a HD addon and a widely aplicable skin was a clever move.

    (Great Pixie, there.)

You only get one free figure. The only difference is from which group you can pick according to how much you buy. The 1st category is if you buy 2, the second category is if you buy 3 and the 3rd category is if you buy 4. Hope that makes sense. These Daz sales almost require programs these days they're getting so convoluted ;).

    Laurie

Okay, thanks for the reply. I'd gotten spoiled on the 3 free pro-bundles when buying the newest character set and add-ons.

I think most of the time DO characters don't have extras like a nose size morph, so they didn't think to mention it.

Not when you have absolutely zero interest in owning the DO character specific HD morphs... Every character that comes with them now is a lost sale from me.

It’s a cute figure but nothing I can really use so I’m going to have to pass on this release and hope for something more interesting next month.

  • It's interesting, but not something I think I'd use, I do however LOVE Glumgurgle. I'd like to be able to just use him, wonder if you need the Ollie morphs? Oh and the aviator outfit is way cool!

Reminds me of the main character from the Ratatouille movie. I am not a big fan of Ollie but I am happy to see Daz have added variety to G8M characters. Hopefully, Gianni 8 will be released soon.

And here I was, thinking that DAZ is selling it's stuff worldwide, which would make ethnical misrepresentation a wee bit trickier than the usual Hollywood misrepresentations...

Perhaps there should be an policy for DAZ to bring out new figures in percentages fitting to thedistribution of ethnicities in the real world.

Too bad that this would mean the number of Orcs, Elves/Elfs, Dwarfs/Dwarves and (add your favourite not really existing fantasy creature or alien here) would be terribly small.

Here's Ollie as a quick and not entirely accurate impression of Pratchett's Cohen the Barbarian, with the Vinnuth Kriegor armor. I definitely like him :-)

I adore Ollie, and confess that  today is the first time I have ever purchased a Pro Bundle on release day. I see him more as a caricature than a toon or fantasy figure and will get a lot of use from him!!!

Oh My! I do so love Ollie.jpg
