  • Anyone know what outfit is on the main promo art for base Aiko 8 (shiny pink top with blue shorts)?

Definitely purchasing Aiko 8 as Aiko 7 was my favorite “7 series” character.

    Greetings,

I know this sounds a little crazy, but I'm wondering if there's a psychological reason many of us are addicted. I have lucid dreams, where I can control my dreams with my mind and create worlds of beauty just by focusing my thoughts and creating 3D art or even working in Photoshop is a bit like that. You can create your own worlds and escape from the horror or negativity that may be going on in the "real" world that you have no control over...

@Wonderland Sure, there's definitely a lot going on, and various aspects to it.  It's sometimes called 'Retail Therapy', although retail therapy is usually a short-term thing.  The idea of alleviating discomforting moods and low levels of unease or depression through buying yourself something pretty and fun is not unusual.  It's aided by the visual medium, and how the items are portrayed...and the brief hit of creativity we get when we visualize our own fantasy scenes with the items in them (fantasy here being 'imagination-related', not 'sword and sorcery').  We get a hit of happy-making creative juices by incorporating the pretty things on offer in scenes in our head that are typically far more complicated than what we'll actually eventually render.

There's an aspect of attraction, I believe, as well.  You often read about folks complaining about the way the characters look (long faces, odd pectorals, etc.) as if humans didn't come in all spectrums of looks...but in actuality, it's because folks (in general; there'll always be exceptions) want to render characters they're attracted to.  That attraction adds another layer to the endorphin hit that we get when we look at some items in the DAZ store.

Lastly, the price is often low enough that it's in the 'impulse buy' category, and we've sometimes already made the mental leap of considering the money 'spent' by buying gift certificates (justifying our pre-emptive purchase by the discount we received).  So the barrier to spending it is lower.

Actually rendering, doing the work to make a good image, and spending the time searching out details to tweak, and make it look better, is a lot of effort.  Our brains dislike effort, so instead we come back to the store for the cheap creativity hit of imagining all the awesome renders we could do with the stuff that's new in the store...

tl;dr - Our brains are hedonistic, lazy little things that don't hesitate to spend money (and discount past purchases) in order to get the hits of happiness and creativity that new visually attractive items bring.

I think a little too much about this stuff. laugh

Now to go finish up my work, so I can get to play with Aiko 8 before new store stuff distracts me tomorrow... ;)

hmm ... if you all don't like that she doesn't look like "Aiko", why not just use Aiko?
Wasn't anime/manga about round eyed Caucasians? that's why they have those huge round eyes interpreted by Japanese as they look at Caucasians.
    does this character look Asian?

No, anime characters are not about round-eyed caucasians. Where Westerners go wrong is by identifying Caucasian vs Asian by their eye shape. Japanese people don't see anime characters as caucasian. Caucasians in anime are big, loud, disrespectful of personal space, and often have blue eyes with smaller irises. (And of course they often have blonde hair.)

A 'proper' anime figure would have every culture identifying it as a member of their own dominant phenotype. In this regard, I suspect Aiko 8 is doing splendidly.

Well their slang for delinquents is Yankee and blonde hair is viewed as a sign as well in anime and manga.  So have to agree with you fully on that.

I'm sorry, but I don't see a single drop of anime in Aiko. Not contemporary nor anything from the past. She looks more Disney than anything. She does look like she could have walked off the set of recent Final Fantasy games as an unpaid extra, but FF is not anime. But Aiko doesn't even look as Japanese as a FF character. Aiko's face is just...generic.

Lightning from Final Fantasy 13 was so popular that she modeled real handbags.

Aiko 8 does not look like that, either. She does not have the same eyes, and her strange button mouth does not fit. Lightning has a full pair of lips. A8 does look better than the horror show that was A7, so there is a mild improvement there. And yes, I'm saying Aiko 7 was a horror show. But Aiko 8 as an Aiko? LOL.

Indeed, "Aiko" is a Daz brand. And Daz has Sakura to pick up the anime side of things...but why did it have to be that way? Why did Aiko have to change so much that Sakura was need to replace the void Aiko 3 left so many years ago? Aiko 8 could have recaptured what Aiko 3 was, while Sakura took the Final Fantasy castaway role. I think that this would have made a lot of sense, and made more people happier than the situation as it is now. You actually have people not buying Aiko 8 based on principle alone...that's not cool Daz, and it can't be cool for business. You could have made more people happier doing it like I said. RIP Aiko.

IMO, Aiko 8 is sort of "meh" and Ok. Sh'e kind of in between the two. I don't see much of a reason to buy her. Also, Aiko 8 releases with perhaps the worst initial offer of any 8 series character. No free bundles, and to get the best deal, you have to add multiple add on items. And for those people who buy every bundle ever, do recall that past bundles had extra discounts for owning previous bundles. No discounts for owning any previous Aikos! This is a very easy pass by me.

Also, the product "Aiko 7 for Aiko 8" has the single worst description of all time in the Daz store. Who approved that? Massive confusion abound from this item. Plus Riza has the wrong requirements listed on her store page, which has led to even more confusion. What happened to the approval process? Come on guys, get it together. These are not random 3rd parties, these are releases for a (formerly) iconic Daz Original character. I say formerly because Aiko is no longer iconic in her generic Final Fantasy form.

One more question Llynara, if you do not mind. Is Aiko 7 a full morph on its own, or is it just a morph of the Aiko 8 morph, and will not work on its own?

The way I saw your dial controls, I thought it might be the latter, but according to the product page, Aiko 7 for Aiko 8, relies on owning Aiko 8. Does dialling in Aiko 7 alone, create the identical morph to what you see on Genesis 3's Aiko 7?

I think a lot of judgment is being made without a careful observation. I spent some time looking at the promo pics and the renders presented by the people who already bought her. One thing to say for sure is that she DEFINITELY took a huge step away from the "anime" style, her eyes are almost normal sized, her body is way less curvy. Even her lips feel more on the "realistic" side.

On the other hand, I feel the promo pictures are VERY deceiving, because she has bright blue eyes in almost ALL of them and that takes a HUGE impact on how you perceive her "nationality" style. If you look at the 4th pic from last to first on her product page, where she wears a kimono-ish outfit with a longer hair, her eyes aren't so prominent, you will notice that she feels way more "asian". In my humble opinion, she looks way more like a south korean K-Pop girl, where the old "anime" style of previous generations has been replaced by a western animation style (Disney, Square Enix, as people mentioned already).

I do think it is very possible to make her look asian, depending on your choice of outfit, hairstyle and eye color. The thing that is keeping me from pulling the trigger on the sale is that I don't know how long will it take for Lilith 8 to arrive, which is the one maybe most people are waiting for.

  • I would really love to know what outfit that is in the promo images for Aiko 8  that would number 14.  Love the shoes stockings sock combo there.

I don't think it's any different than doll collecting, honestly. Except this takes up less space and has no resale value.

Yes, I dialed in Aiko 7 and the dial for Aiko 8 was not dialed in at all. I could try uninstalling Aiko 8 and see if the Aiko 7 morph still works. I suspect it does.

Yes, I agree, I spend more time in the store imagining what I'll do with a product, than actually doing it, LOL. Sometimes I imagine it so clearly, it almost seems redundant to actually do it! But I've had dreams (in my sleep) where I see a pixelated ocean or something, like it's an unfinished render, then finish it with my mind, or create oceans of all different colors or art with my mind. I wish creating scenes in DS were as easy as they are in my dreams! But when you are creating scenes or working in Photoshop, especially if it's your own project and not for someone else, you can escape into it, forget politics, violence around the world, just escape into your own world that you control completely!

Hmm first chance to play with and compare. Loaded Sakura and Aiko  gave them both Aiko's base skin . Then I did a 75/25 split with each figure Sakura went to 75S/ 25A and Aiko went the opposite,  Seems to work nicely for style. I like the new Aiko although she doesn't have the wow factor I had with Sakura.  She will be useful creating the one type of anime character I like but rarely see done. The tall black haired student president type that seems to rule the roost as either the villian or antihero.  I really like Salem she has the dark look like as well.  The loli characters of late tend to make me cringe with few exceptions lol.

I did end up getting the bundle because I liked several of the PA products that were add-ons and I really like the long hair, sci-fi stuff I can always use and it came out to $29 in cart with add-ons at $4.00-6.00. Not the BEST deal but OK... I always like the ability to add morphs to my gene pool, the more variety the better. I'm tapped out though now. Unless they have a really good gift card offer, I'm probably done for this sale...

Yeah I have to fight the urge to buy . Wish I had not given in on Alexandra . I liked the addons as well and picked up a few and hair will always make look twice.

Aiko 8 reminds me of Aiko 5 in these renders but with a much better and improved shape.

I LOVE Salem! Here she is in quick unfinished renders without Aiko 8.

Top one just out of the box front view, default lighting.

Second one, slight expression, same default lighting.I think she looks like a French model for some reason.

  • I still use A3, since it was pretty good approximation of an anime girl; although now there is Sakura that takes that spot, so Aiko is more like a generic FF/Disney movie girl. Which is not bad to be honest.

They used to sell a product called Aiko toon, which was giving yet another different type of animated figure, using the same A3 base. In the end depends from what you want to accomplish, the figures nowadays seems to converge all in the same direction, while in the old days of 3.0 figures (A3, V3, M3), you could see a very distinct separation among them. I like the new Aiko figure, but what I don't get is if she can actually use previous Aiko and Genesis clothes/characters, or if it can only use Genesis8 and Aiko8 products.

Aiko 8 can use Genesis 1, 2, 3 clothes/hairs, Genesis 3 chars' skin (base UV). And if you convert/autofit Generation 4 clothes to Genesis 3, you can use them on Genesis 8 too.

Thanks! That add more variety, since I have some clothes for the Genesis family that I use with Sakura

Thank you so much for posting this! I really wanted to see her without Aiko and she is so pretty! Does Salem use the G8F Base UV?

With Daz not offering the additional free bundles, Aiko 8 is a "no buy" for me. However, I do like the look of Salem and would love to use her skin on some previous generations.

    Yes, base female!

  • I do love the sci fi action suit for the same reasons as the person posted earlier in the thread, No stilettos or holes.  But I can't help picturing a Klingon wearing it.

I think all the G8 figures use the same UV - even the "Daz Original Official 8" figures. Males and females use different UVs but as far as I can tell all the G8 female characters have the same UV as the base Genesis 8 Female and all the G8 male characters have the same UV as the base Genesis 8 Male. I think they've pretty much gotten rid of doing a different UV for each new "Official" figure (thank goodness!).

  • They all use Genesis 3 base for the uvs.  I am grateful they did as well.  Some of the kenji charactersI would love to use but they don't convert over due to the difference.
