The Riza character is well done but making it dependent on Akio7 for Akio8 seems very odd to me. It's a morph based on a morph based on a character.

I already have Akio7 so have no need for Akio7 for Akio8. The dependency makes Riza into a very expensive character and I'll have to pass on it. If it was based just on Akio8 I would have picked it up.

I love her! She'll be an instant buy for me. I have all the Aikos and think she's adorable. DAZ and the PAs did a great job. The add on characters are spectacular too. I haven't spent much on March Madness, but I will today!

If you squint her eyes, she looks kinda of Asain, when you don't she looks Euro-centric... lol... now you have options. Sadly, this is a no buy for me as there are better asain and anime models for G8.

Riza is also the only character I am interested in, she has a very attractive face, however I don't have Aiko 7, and have no wish for Aiko 8, so it is a shame she is based on both of them. I would be interesting in seeing what she looks like without those morphs.

Since Riza does not look at all stylized, it is curious that she relies on two stylized morphs.

I agree with those saying the problem is the name.  I like the character on its own merits, but... the Aiko characters at Daz are a brand.  That brand has been targeted for stylized or toon needs (anime).  I can mix the character with other content to get closer (thank you for the samples, Diva), but the whole point is that the brand has conditioned me to expect to use Aiko morphs to tweak some photoreal character to make it look more toonish.

So, I am getting the character, and I'm checking how to change the name of stuff listed in the smart content tabs.  I will change the name of Sakura 8 to Aiko 8, and will change the name of Aiko 8 to Teen Josie 8b.

Do you have Redz G3 UVs for G8? She should work with those. I'll try in a little bit. You could dial in any morphs you want from there. Plenty to choose from.

I am not sure why I would need that UV product, since the skin for Riza uses the default Genesis Base 8 (ie Genesis base 3) UVs that all the other 8 girls have. It is the morphs I would be lacking. I have Aiko 6 (and 3, 4, and 5), but it is not obvious why stylized morphs are needed.

Oh, then it should be fine. I was assuming that she was somehow made for Aiko 7 since she requires that shape. Strange.

    Woo hoo!  Aiko 8.

Wait.  That's not Aiko.  Quick!  Someone call the cops!  There's massive identity theft going on. Poor Aiko 8 is locked in a basement somewhere while this chick is walking around using her identity.

  • RAMWolffRAMWolff Posts: 10,364

HAHAHAHA  Perfect Crescent.  I agree with everyone.  No buy for me too.  She's NOT Aiko, she's some imposter and doing a very bad likeness if you ask me.  Perhaps DAZ needs to get the artist that created her to work on an update to included some more Anime stylized face morphs for her, like back in the days of Aiko 4 when she came with 4 face variations.

Also this leaves one more gap for the boys... it's bad enough we didn't really get an OFFICIAL mate for Sukura but if they expect their buyer base to go another round with no male counterpart they are sorely mistaken if they think I'm plunking down my money to have yet another female in my gene pool and no male counterpart.  Get it together DAZ!

  • Aiko 8 looks more like Victoria 8 had a sister. The first thing I noticed was the face. Less Asian and more of a Victoria 8 clone. Whatever DAZ is doing with the Genesis 8 line feels much like how they handled the Generation 5 line of figures.

  • I think she's really cute, and usually I don't care at all for the younger characters!  She's a nice alternative to the Thorne teens, fitting more in line with the rest of the G8F look.  Though I'm not quite sure if she's a teen or a young adult, as it seems to change from promo pic to promo pic.

But I'm not seeing Aiko when I look at her.  Is it time to give this girl a new name?

I really like her as a stylized female base. I think she looks phenomenal. I don't think she reminds me much of any other Aiko though.

This promo image suggests she can also make a very good stylized guy base if ported over which makes me happy.

Reminds me a bit of Fuminn's characters for H4 (Rendo.) I think you could definitly make an H8 out of A8.

She looks a lot like Aiko 7 to me— they both have a tiny thin mouth I really don’t like. I think that’s Aiko’s new niche! Big Eyes Small Mouth!

anyhow, I’d decided last night to probably pass but then Diva posted the blends and I changed my mind. I would like to see Riza without that ‘required’ product though....

  • LlynaraLlynara Posts: 4,772

I've got the required product but haven't installed. I'll do some with and without renders, then post them. I can't imagine she'd look that different since 7 and 8 are similar, but we'll see.

This new version is too much different from the "original" Aiko 4... Her Animeish appearance was something basilar. Even The Girl is starting to look like someone else.

Aiko 4 wasn't the original Aiko, she was the third, and when A4 came out, there were a lot of people complaining about how she didn't look as animelike as Aiko 3.  There were also a lot of people who complained that The Freak 5 was basically a straight copy of The Freak 4, so DAZ really can't win either way.  My take is that we've already received one very anime-like toon style base figure in Genesis 8 with Sakura and we had two other anime-style base figures in Genesis 3 with Star and Keiko, so anyone who was thinking that Aiko was going to take a dodge back in that direction was really just setting themselves up for disappointment.

Personally, I see a use for her im my runtimes, but I'm waiting to see if we get a prior-purchasers discount as we have with every other iconic figure so far in G8 before I plunks my money down.

Only really liked one outfit so I decided to go ala carte this time. I'll pick up the single figure because I've gotten all the G8s so far except for the Thorne one and Sakura, but not sure if I'll ever use it. Definitely not at 100 percent anyway, but more likely for mixing.

With the exception of Alexandra and Edward, I get less and less pumped about each new character in the G8 line. Especially since it seems there are even less males in this version than there was in G3. Meh. If the trend continues, G9 might just be a total wash for me (and hopefully that won't come for quite awhile yet or it will definitely be a wash).

hmm ... if you all don't like that she doesn't look like "Aiko", why not just use Aiko?
Wasn't anime/manga about round eyed Caucasians? that's why they have those huge round eyes interpreted by Japanese as they look at Caucasians.
    does this character look Asian?

No but in that picture the eyes are bigger then normal giving her that charisteric anime look. Aiko 8 doesnt even have that. She has 'normal' eyes. So she is neither Japanese nor anime.

Dont get me wrong im no0t saying Aiko 8 is ugly or anything she looks beautifull but not wat her name stands for. They should have called her Jenny and im convinced more people would have bought her.

I mean, I was tired when they first put the ad up for Aiko, but I thought for a minute they put the ad for the wrong figure up. LOL. Aiko she is NOT, and I detest anime....lol. But Aiko has always been anime and I agree with the people that say she looks more like a Thorne or a Disney princess than anything. Actually, the more I look at her, the more she looks like a toonified version of Charlotte to me.

No, anime characters are not about round-eyed caucasians. Where Westerners go wrong is by identifying Caucasian vs Asian by their eye shape. Japanese people don't see anime characters as caucasian. Caucasians in anime are big, loud, disrespectful of personal space, and often have blue eyes with smaller irises. (And of course they often have blonde hair.)

A 'proper' anime figure would have every culture identifying it as a member of their own dominant phenotype. In this regard, I suspect Aiko 8 is doing splendidly.

  • agent unawaresagent unawares Posts: 3,513

Anime characters aren't "asian" any more than American cartoon characters are "caucasian," it all completely depends on how the character is presented and the subtle details of their design the interpretation of which often depends on how everyone else around them is designed.

  • davesodaveso Posts: 7,884

then the form of Aiko is immaterial really. does she fit with your art or not is probably more the issue.

I really like the new Aiko, and all of addon characters as well.  I think this will be the first base character that I buy all of her available launch characters.

    does this character look Asian?

No, absolutely not.  The anime look is how the Japanese perceive people in general to look, themselves included.  The origin of the "big eyes small mouth" aesthetic goes back to Osamu Tezuka, the "God-emperor" of Japanese manga who pretty much kickstarted the entire Japanese comics and animation industries by himself.  Tezuka openly acknowledged that his basic style was the result of emulating the elements he loved about the look of Disney's films of the 30s & 40s... to the point where his animators were trained using old photocopies of Disney training manuals.  That minimalist look, in turn, was developed by Disney on Snow White, because, in hand drawn animation before the days of comuters, it was very difficult to keep smaller eyes from appearing to drift across the face from frame to frame, while strongly defined noses usually came across as looking unnaturally big, and all of it would vary from shot to shot depending on which individual animator worked on the scene.  The end solution was to either go to extreme caricature, as with Popeye, Betty Boop or the Seven Dwarfs, or to reduce the face down to the basic details, which is why Snow White, as animated, looked like this:

As a relative comparison, here's Speed Racer's girlfriend Trixie   Note that Snow's eyes are actually bigger than Trixie's, and Snow also has less of a nose. Of course, once Tezuka set the general design aesthetic, a large host of other artists like Go Nagai, Leji Matsumoto, etc., expanded on the look in dramatically different directions.  Probably the biggest differentiation after that was the introduction of the color code for hair, as, when animation moved to color, the idea of giving extreme haircolors was a way of differentiating characters who, since the vast majority of anime and manga characters are supposed to be Jpanese, would all have the same ubiquitous black hair.

Yeah, I do a regular panel on this at anime conventions since I work in the anime industry.  If you're interested in the subject, I strongly recomemnd Frederick Schodt's groundbreaking work "Manga!  Manga!  The World of Japanese Comics" as the best overview on the subject.

It's a decent deal for the Pro plus four addons, if you weren't hoping for two free Pro Bundles instead....

As someone who first dabbled with DAZ starting with Genesis 8, not getting even one free bundle is disappointing. All of the G8 pro bundles before Aiko 8 gave buyers 3 bundles. DAZ has changed their sales starting last January when they now require additional add-ons to get discounts with the pro bundle. If I remember correctly, from 2, then 3, and now we're at 4 additional products.

And speaking of promo pics, the best looking render I found in the Aiko 8 sales page has a product not even sold here. Salem is wearing the Maid Outfit found at the other store. Whoever made that render sold me on the outfit. yes

Hah thanks for the compliment :) I nabbed the outfit specifically for her promos so glad it went over well :D
