    ...mmmmm green curry...

Don't do champagne always get a headache from it even if I just have a couple glasses (can't afford the good stuff and the cheap brands are too sugary).  Fin Du Monde, excellent brew choice.  Heading out soon to get some Old Knucklehead barleywine over at the Bridgetown Brewery a few blocks away and restock my supply of cheese and stinky fish for the evening (old family tradition).  Portland may be expensive for housing, however when you can't swing a Gungan around by the tongue without hitting a brew pub, it makes it all worth it (and beer to go there is cheaper than in the supermart).

I ended up with a 22oz bottle of  Big Bad Baptist https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/22893/73618/ since they were out of Fin Du Monde (damn it).  Highly rated and something I've never had before, so I'm happy. Getting a growler would be modestly affordable except for the cab fare to/from, so I'm had there.

I've had good champagne (Piper Heidsick - $35 a bottle) and it still gives me a headache and makes me feel ill. even one glass makes me sick to the stomach.  Plus I really can't stand the taste.  Deffo a good beer for me instead!

Green curry paste, red curry paste, coconut milk all arrived along with boneless skinless thighs, so I'm ready to curry up some chicken!

    ...excellent choice there.

I don't like wines for the same reason.  I'm a very dull drinker.   I rarely have beer unless one is thrust in my hand by someone bigger than me.   In a bar, I always order a simple vodka tonic (not a call brand, just standard bar vodka), period.  Dark liquors give me terrible hangover as do red wines.  And I rarely have more than two drinks in an evening.  However, I do have a few bottles of champagne (little "c", not big "C") at home, per year.  I like a dry champagne because I don't get hungover from it.  To me, sweet champagnes are just yuck!  For me it's got to be at least "Very Dry" but I actually prefer "Brut" .  I've found that for less than $20 (usually $17-$19) a bottle "Korbel Brut" is OK.  It's not harsh nor is it slimy sweet, it's a little tart with just a smidgen of sweet.  Almost a beer taste.  After two 5oz flutes my nose is buzzing and I'm talkative.  I love to share it but nobody I know around here drinks champagne (beer & whisky crowd).  So, I don't go out much, and NOBODY EVER comes to my place.  So, I get a bottle of Korbel Brut for my birthday and one one for New Years, and maybe one for the 4th of July, and spend the whole day drinking it.

    champagne sweetness scale: http://winefolly.com/review/how-much-sugar-in-brut-champagne/

PS:  I've had more expensive champagnes but unless it's a special occasion and one has money to burn I don't see the point.  The taste difference isn't that much better.  But going lower than $12 a bottle for a sparkling wine (I hesitate to call them even little "c" champagne) is not unnoticeable. (*shudder*)

PPS: I do have a pet peeve about exuberant champagne openers.  I've been taught that one opens the bottle without an explosive "pop".  One should control the cork, and the noise should be no more than a "baby's fart".  The point of champagne is the carbonation.  Big pops and spraying foam defeats the whole purpose,  Who would drink flat beer?  Why burn out your champagne in the first 2 seconds?  Leave spraying bottles of champagne for the locker room.  And if it's got a screw cap, you've got the wrong stuff.

White wines are too sweet and reds will eventually burn my stomach.  My wiune limit is 2 glasses, any more and it's Tums all night.  And wine hangovers are the WORST!

I prefer vodka and diet soda (Coke or Dr. Pepper), or beer and vodka shots.  I can't handle whiskey, I turn in Mr. Hyde and can get mean.  Tequila gives me a more mellow buzz than vodka but the kind I like is $50 a bottle (ouch).  A good potato vodka produces many nights of relaxation.

    ...yesyes on the Potato Wodka

OMG I am so stuffed!! And leftovers: spaghetti, lasagna, chicken parm, stuffed mushrooms, zupa Toscana (soup) and zucchini. Not a huge pile of any one of them, but enough for two meals.  Average the price out and it comes out pretty reasonable, and every single thing was delicious.  I got 3 breadsticks too! But I'm going into a food coma... :-|

It's all relative.  What does a cocktail cost in a barely non-seedy bar?  Have two, leave a tip and you're pretty damn close to $20.  Take a taxi (twice), have a cheap dinner and you're closer to a hundred.  At least with a bottle of Korbel at home I have four or five flutes that last most of the afternoon and evening.  And if I wish to, I can have just two and then pop a device on the bottle that keeps the other half of the bottle fizzy for at least a day.  And if you only drink three times a year, price ain't all that much of a concern.

Oh, but my big splurge is when on the rare occasions I go to a real concert hall for a symphony, I always have a glass of champagne during the intermission.  Now, that drink is overpriced! surprise  But classy! yes

..yeah when I spend 17 - 20$ for something to drink at home it's a bottle Potato Wodka (usually 15$) or Irish Whiskey (19$) which lasts me a while (about a month).  True going out does cost more but art of it is the socialising (which is more important to me). Usually I just get beer (which is cheaper than hard drinks) or only get a well drink at happy hour (and we have several places here which have all day happy hours on Sunday and Monday).

Where I am we have a special deal where low income seniors like myself can get symphony tickets for 5$. I have to check each Monday before the scheduled concert for availability but rarely miss out. Now the drinks they offer there, yes spendy though not as bad as at the main arena during concerts (most overly loud) and sporting events where a "rocks glass" equivalent volume of Buttwiper is something like 5$ and mixed drinks (well quality) around 10$ (and measured out to the picoletier).  When I used to go to Basketball games there (when the Blazers were good) I'd take a flask with me, got to the one Coke Machine they had (3$ for a 20 oz bottle), sip some off then go somewhere to discretely pour several fingers of Rum in.  Would last me until halftime.  I'd do the same for the second half so for maybe about 8$ total (cost of the coke and rum used) I had maybe 40$ worth had I bought the same amount at the concession. Unfortunately, since 9-11 they inspect everything you bring in and you have to pass through a metal detector.  The Blazers also haven't been all that good since to warrant the expense of a ticket (which has also gone up in price) either.

Speaking about booze ... Maggie May was my favorite song. My first drink was at age fifteen was on my wedding day. My wedding song was "Whiter Shade of Pale" and I have no doubt I was. Sitting in my rigid Catholic Mother-in-laws house, me a ward of the court, unworthy of him, ordered a rum and 7 (because that is what the person sitting next to me ordered) ...  and got drunk on it . . . but what child bride wouldn't? For me life happened after we divorced. My favorite performances were Phantom of the Opera (went 3 times) and Evita. My favorite concerts were Bowie, Rod Stewart and Jagger. BUT now my fav is Halsey but I still prefer rum with 7.

...damn, I still love Maggie May.  Actually saw Procol Harum perform Whiter Shade live. Have a record of theatre organ music where the organist actually performs the original Phantom score.

...yeah, am toast tonight.  Wisconsin Badgers won the Orange Bowl and several people at the pub bought me drinks including as glass of Laphroaig malt Scot's whiskey.

The really neat part is the Orange Bowl stadium is the home field for Wisconsin's opponent in the game, Miami U.  So much for the "naysayers" who said Wisconsin wasn't a tough team this  year.

Cold last night outside.  I stayed warm & toasty under the 'lectric blanket till 9:00AM.  Temperature on porch was 0F (*brrrrr*)  Haven't even opened my door or swept the snow from the porch since Christmas.  Don't have to go anywhere until Jan 16 (blood test) but groceries getting low again.  Will have to trudge through snow to the store to pick up milk, eggs & salad stuff.  It's only a third of a mile, but for me, in snow, it's like a marathon.

Having worked in the game industry long ago, I can tell you it's barely controlled chaos - the list of things that can go wrong at the last minute are huge and can't really be identified until most of the game is done.  Most of the issues we had were level and art related, like holes left in a level that you could fall through and never return from! All it takes is one undetected unsealed piece of geometry and bye-bye player.. it could take QA weeks to find it and you have to delay ship to fix it!!! Glad I got out of th buisness, it's super stressful.

Yecch. I hate FROZEN WATER FROM THE SKY, bloody stuff is a huge pain to walk in.  Stay safe!
