if there a black hole center of our galaxy, and galaxy still expanding, is stuff comng out of the black hole?  but, if stuff still coming out, then, its not a black hole.

Stuff never comes out of a black hole. If the galaxy is a river, the black hole might be a storm drain, sucking in some of the water. We might then be a small paper boat floating on the river. Perhaps we'll be get sucked in, if we're close enough, or maybe we'll just float by. Let's hope so, cos Pennywise the clown is in that drain . . .

Expansion can be beaten locally - the galaxy itself is gravitationally bound (most of the matter is too slow-moving to escape) and is part of a gravtitationally bound cluster all rushing towards the Great Attractor in Virgo (I think that's all currently still standing). If the expansion is indeed accelerating and continues to do so that may cease to be true, but for now gravity is winning on points.

Black holes aren't that special - if you swapped the sun for a solar mass black hole the planets woudl orbit pretty much as they do now (the only difference, affecting small stuff, would be the loss of radiation pressure). It's only as you get close to a black hole that the differences become apparent in the way gravity behaves, with strong tidal forces tending to pull things apart as they approach the event horizon (the point of absolute no return).

  • "Point of absolute no return":  That point at which you've handed over your money for an item at a store going out of business.

when you're on a ship at see, all you see on the horizon is the see horizon, how far is that?

when i go the beach on north shore of long island, i can see conneticut.  the horizon at sea must be further away than conneticut.

Depends how high up you are above the water. This calculates it for you. http://www.ringbell.co.uk/info/hdist.htm

I am working on developing an art teacher for my story's school.  Trying to decide between Khnum or Khnemu for his name.  Ken is not arty enough so it is either Khnum or Khnemu.

I would probably go with Khnemu because it doesn't as easily invite "num num num" jokes.

Okay Khnemu will be his name and clay will be his favorite medium.

I am thinking of getting of my tablet and sleeping.  Turning on Pandora.

I guess I will figure out about Thor's Hammer tomorrow or something.  It is important for my story.

  • Hello.  Still coming back from Hurricane Irma.  Not great damage, but did (and will continue to) result in some financial pain.  Hope you are all well.

...not a very exciting PC sale so far.  Seems the only PC items that trigger extra discounts are all fantasy themed  and I'm not much into medieval fantasy at all (I don't even have MIl Dragon2 let alone Dragon3).  Yeah I know, PC stuff is not that expensive but I'm on a very tight budget where every purchase needs to be something I'll actually use.

It's what my family would call a "save yer money sale". ie you look at what's on offer and think, yep, I'll save me money for some other time!

I got something that looked like a blister that popped a while back.  I had a doctor appointment and had it looked at.  I got a cream to put on it but the doctor never wrote when to stop it.  It is almost all the way healed but is still a little red. Since the doctor never told me when to stop using it I have no clue when to do so.  I do not want to stop too soon.  Wonder when a good time to call my doctor to see when I am supposed to stop.

Some linguist apologist said it was OK to pronounce "kol-o-nel" as "ker-nel" and it stuck.  If you listen carefully, you can sometimes hear it pronounced with the "L" in some more formal or foreign situations.  But where the "R" came from I haven't a clue.  Perhaps it was left over from the unused "R"s in Boston where they don't have cars, they have cahs.

However, I blame this sort of problem on the lazy attitude toward "L"s in the middle of words like "walk", "talk", "stalk", and "salmon".  But hey, it's OK, "languages change" cheeky

Either that or it was French and god knows which letters are to be actually pronounced in French. frown

it's something to do with the fact that it came from an old latin word,  and then got muddled up with old french.    it gets even worse when you wonder about the British pronunciation of the rank below colonel, which is lieutenant colonel

English is itself a mongrel language, imposed on the true britons by the raft of invaders, there were the Romans (Italianate), Angles,  Saxon, (both Germanic) Normans (French), and even Vikings and other marauders from Skandinavia. Thes have all got mangled together with the original brithonic languages native to the british isles (the celtic and gaelic languages) and you wonder why there is some confusion about spelling and pronunciation.
