Skin is more than just light to dark; there are quite a few color hues for skin that are valid and subtle but hardly ever available.

Some people have nearly flawless skin, but most do have a lot of different hues in different areas of their face. The below render is G3F and the skin texture is from a woman who has a much less than perfect complexion.

My question is how much detail is too much? Where is the line for what is attractive and when does realism start to become undesirable? My take is that DAZ and their PA's have a pretty good sense of what people actually want and what sells.

The character you posted looks awesome. I'd buy her.

That doesn't look more realistic to me as the distribution of the varying skin tones isn't nothing that I've noticed in real life.  I was refering to shades of white, pink, red, yellow, olive, brown, green, blue, and black tones overall and less filling the faces with uneven tones, blemishes and cranking on the bump & normal map strengths. I would say some of those skin color tones mentionted above probably belong in something other than the diffuse maps but I'm not expert enough to be sure. I should try to do so myself as I've noticed these tones but perhaps most artists generally haven't.

To me 'realism' is never undesirable but thats a personal taste and subjective.  For me... you can always remove reality once you've achieved that standard.  It's real easy to white wash and make bland colorless characters... it's reality that requires an effort.  I think the answer of which characters are the best of the best will tell them what the market wants. :)

    +1
which is why I still use Syyd's
"Vanilla Sky & Horizon" photo based textures
for V4 ,on the G2 Female.

Thanks msam, not really a character, at least not yet. Just a WIP.

Thanks for pointing out Syyd. I had a quick look (I will definitely take a closer look when I have more time) at his characters, some of them look quite interesting and with good detail.

The skin is from 3dsk, a woman named Edita. At least that is how she is listed on their website. The render is overly saturated to emphasize the point that there are people with quite a lot of varying colors in their face. Not at all intended to try and be realistic, although I think that reasonable amounts go a long way to that goal. She also has some pimples, scabs and even sores (I know, sounds gross). But that is the reason I was wondering how much of that kind of stuff do people want in a texture set. At any rate, I'm glad that you like the render. If I ever finish her, I'll be sure and make a render suitable for the DAZ gallery and post her.

Doesnt look oversaturated to me, looks pretty awesome, best 'realistic skin' image posted in this thread by far. She just looks like she hasnt slept for a while, but really quite stunning. Only detractor is the lipstick line on the bottom lip.

@RT: I really like your character too. I hope you finish her.

See.. I so agree with what you had to say and I LOVE that you said she looks like she 'hasn't slept for a while'... exactly what I was talking about.. the look of the character tells a story... I noticed that lipstick line but given the amount of details in the rest of the face, I could chock that up to some kind of make up trend .. besides.. real easy to swap out just the lips from any other character so long as the rest of the body looks as good as the face does... that's going to be a lot of work.

:)  Have a great day.. happy rendering!

It's hard to tell from the promos any more. Most vendors are so proud of their mad makeup skillz that you never see what the character looks like without it.

I almost never put makeup on my characters, and I detest the "buried in eyeliner" look, so that's had me veering off from a lot of characters in the store.

Am quickly reaching the point that perfect eyebrows are enough to make me hit the back button.

You know... I usually pride myself on my 'attention to details' ... something that they taught us in the military... but now that you've mentioned it, I see your point like never before.. I was just examining another recent release and as soon as I saw the promo pictures I saw exactly what you are talking about.. all to stylized painted on 'mad makeup'.. Thanks for pointing that out.. So what's your favorite character to date?

I just picked up Kalea and her HD morphs, and was quite suprised at how nice she renders up
