I decided to redo his eyebrows. I thinned out the line and now it looks much better and he actually looks like my OC looking back at me.
There is only one mention of Nirv Anime Modern Bedroom in the forums (before my comment), and it doesn't say that the grumpy Rabbit Pillow is floating ominously in the room. (This is not a criticism of the product. I just find this observation extremely amusing that I want to make the Rabbit Pillow a character for my stories. Even though I have floating Pommeranians already. X'D)
I just loaded this set up because I want to make its interior match Apartment 39 or vice versa.
I haven't been rendering anything worth posting. But, I am more aggressively rendering pics to use as "sketches" to trace over/line for "2D" art.
Here is an example of a character I drew back in late February of this year. Today, I tried to recreate his body in DAZ, because I want to make a more "realistic" styled lineart of him, for a character reference. As always, I will draw a lot over the render.
As you can tell by his outfit, this is not something I will ever find in DAZ which just further discourages me in making "proper" renders of these OCs because they will only look phenotypically accurate, but the clothes will be totally wrong. (I think this one uses a couple of morphs I brought over from G8M. I think the strongest morph influencing his face is SONSY Dwarf Male.)
I'm surprised by the sketch, actually. Except for his legs, he had realistic proportions. It was a small drawing, I think his head was like less than 1" tall, so that's why he looks toony. With taking a photo/scanning, I can draw tiny pics, which I inevitably lose, and then draw in more details digitally.
Since this isn't a DAZ render, I've posted the finished result on my regular DeviantArt account. (It is a brief bio of the character, but the beginning of the bio, after the stats, is not nice.) What is traced off of DAZ and what I drew freehand are indistinguishable.
I am now going to try to draw another OC to combine with a DAZ render but she may be tricky because of her headdress. Her name is Aryanna, she works as a Court Mage. But her real job is being the previous character's (his name is Lord Ernest) partner/significant other. Her specialty is healing/regenerative magic, but visually her aesthetics evoke death/the grim reaper. She's supposed to have a cape and in combination with her headdress, she's supposed to resemble an iron maiden. Anyway, she is the OC to blame for me immediately buying Death 9, specifically the Apocalyse Add-On. And no, Aryanna is not a magical creature or fae, she is a regular woman who just looks like this.
Edit: I finished the drawing. But since the result is meant to be "pure" 2D and not 3D posing as 2D, I will just update this comment with the DeviantArt link (goes to my main/drawing account.) [x]
I actually like the base reference pose for her and may try to render it as is, since I may end up changing her leg pose to fit the reference sheet dimensiosn. I decided to put Olympia 9's eyebrows on her since they were of a similar thickness and it made her look like the Corpse Bride.
She is one of my simplest OC morph mixes. Her head is 50% V3D Nena, 25% HH Belle, and 40% Phx Flynn. Her body is also a mix of Nena and Belle, and a G8F morph I converted but what matters is that she's supposed to be slim but hourglass-shaped. I know Flynn has a female add-on, but I specifically mixed the original male shape to widen out the jawline and chin a bit. A lot of female DAZ characters have really small, pointy chins that not only look unrealistic, but when combined it looks "off." So that's why I either try to widen the chins or mix in a "masculine" head shape, like I did here.
I was watching the 2014 RoboCop remake yesterday (I enjoyed it by the way), and I spotted Babina 8 in the movie. Thought I'd share. XD
Not really DAZ, but it is important to my WIPs, since one of the characters in my current writing project is very, very heavily inspired by RoboCop (at least the original movie, which I also rewatched. I was like 12 the first time I saw it and that was many years ago. X'D) I still need to watch RoboCop 2 and RoboCop 3. I watched the remake because it's meant to be an origin movie. So I was curious at how it was going to be handled. I am of the opinion that this movie should've been a R-rated one, instead of PG-13. They could've made it more dark and unsettling, it felt very "cleaned up," and I missed the ironic violence.
I'm going to draw my OC, Ernie, again. For the sake of the reference pic, I used Nahuel's skin on him but he reminds me of Leo 7 and Diego 8, a bit in the render.
I'm scared that my new laptop would get messed up, as it lacks a Nvidia graphics card. So I don't want to push its limits, like I did my old one.
I need to share this somewhere, in case someone else is confused as I was, and needs help in not having to re-download/organize DIM downloads into a SSD.
What I'm trying to do is copy the Manifest Files of the DIM-downloaded products saved to my SSD, into their own separate backup folder. That way, in the event that I use my SSD on another computer, I just copy these Manifest Files to the other PC, so that PC's DIM would recognize them and show me any appropriate update. (This is a screenshot of this storage folder.)
I had issues when I first moved to my newer/current laptop. I did try to ask in the official DAZ Discord, before I started, but the only people who answered my question were other users who rely too heavily on "Smart Content" and other automations, so they were ignorant of manually moving things around. They suggested I redownload everything, which is an inefficient suggestion because the main items in this SSD are very large files that I do not wish to re-download because they take up a lot of storage and bandwidth. (Example is "The Legend for G3F and G8F" by Aeon Soul. Plenty of options but it takes up 2.2 GB's when unpacked. So it must live in the SSD.)
I'm working on and off with my drawn characters that are heavily referenced off of DAZ renders.
Anyway, one of my newest character purchases was Ashcroft HD for G9 because he reminded me a bit of my OC Giacomo (at least his G9 version). In my written stories, Giacomo is a young man who wanted to become a jester, but he was actually supposed to be a bard, so more of a singer than comedian. His DAZ version has proven itself to be a very versatile character actor. I can dress him up in anything and he instantly changes...can't explain it, but I think it's cool and it's made me love him even more.
But the problem with my G9 Giacomo is that his original shape required a Renderhub character (a G9 Astarion), who was a combined head and body morph. So this limited Giacomo's "use" for me, because a lot of the aging/de-aging morphs (if I wanted to see an "old man" Giacomo or child Giacomo), they seem to look better when a head-only shape is used. And also, because one of his main shapes is only "supported by auto-follow" there's a chance I may not be able to quickly fix up any poke-through in clothing before rendering. Having a head-only shaping preset solves a lot of these problems for me.
Since I'm not paranoid about other people stealing my OC, I'm going to share the new head shaping preset I just whipped up that uses Ashcroft (it was successful.) The fuschia/hot pink G9 is the original morph. The gray one is the new one. It is a simple mix.
(If you actually do recreate him based off this screenshot, please tell me. I'd love to see other people's takes on him. Others' renders would probably do my OC more justice since he's not going to be rendered on my potato-PC. XD)
As always, any character that I can use to recreate my OCs is always a good buy that I'd wholeheartedly recommend. Though, I still need to try out Ashcroft's skin and other stuff he comes with but his head shaped looked like it'd work and it did.
I'm keeping both the original shaping preset and the head-only one. Although there's very slight differences that clearly don't match up, as seen on the screenshot, they're small enough that a viewer (of my renders) won't notice a difference. Especially, when I do FilaToon stuff.
Back in 2019, I attempted to make my own version of "Harley Quinn pigtails" using LadyLittleFox's Long Anime Ponytail Hair. The problem with this attempt was the way the hair is UV mapped, that I couldn't make the ponytails be opposite colors. As seen in my other renders [x][x], I didn't even bother to finish texturing the bangs back then, either but it was passable enough. Not only did 3DCoat lag on my previous laptop, but like all my texturing efforts there's no interest (other than mine) to bother and complete the project. Especially now, since this is a G3/G8 hair and most people, who don't personify voxels, have moved on to G9. But yesterday, I decided to revisit this old texturing experiment after moving files around. I made an attempt to give the hair blue/dark streaks but it didn't work out as I hoped.
3DCoat let me paint a single underside streak on the hair, so I decided to make that blue in GIMP. But it doesn't quite match the look I was going for. I am making plans to make a "tropical flowers" ombre hair. (But that would require me to hand draw the textures in Medibang Paint.) The main issue for the tropical flower look is that I must decide on a flower (either plumeria or hibiscus), and then see if my design matches up in 3DCoat.
Here is the original attemt loaded up on 3DCoat, for reference. I did do proper bangs, and even a dark brown hair that's intended to match my own hair color, (the default brown hair is too light) but I haven't tested these on Iray...or Filatoon.
Here is how the bangs look. The character is my G9 self insert with Olympia 9's skin and this particular hair was converted to G9 with Riversoft's converter. It is a boneless hair, so I need to figure out how to add bones to it.
Anyway, this iray render is actually the brown as the Base Color, but everything else -- translucency and glossy is the Harley design I did. I also forgot to mention that I made a scalp texture for the Harley design that has a bit of root showing. Though I don't think it is visible here.
This other render is the Filament render without any Filatoon shaders applied because I wanted to show you the brown I did, which would be the one that gets the flowers added to it. Though I was originally planning to make it brown with blonde tips. I am just surprised that it looks 3Delight.
You've been busy. I really like the way you dive into how you do your art work and your illustrative posts of that process.
Thanks. I partially feel obligated to explain my process. A lot of people I know think digital art is difficult, and are hesitant to try it since they fear they'll become overwhelmed. 3D art is very difficult, compared to other digital art like drawing. However, DAZ makes it seem easy. So if I explain the random things I do in and/or with DAZ, hopefully it encourages others who stumble upon my posts, to try it for themselves. Even if they have a weak laptop, like I do.
I do not mean to make this into an anti-AI statement, but if you (or anyone else) makes the effort of creating art, you will learn how to appreciate it more. Especially after knowing all the work that goes behind the scenes. Or even grow to love making things that have your own personal touch, which is a satisfying feeling that cannot be imitated when someone or something else does the work for you.
I can't believe I had time for a decent test render, where I at least gave an effort to the composition because I only believe in posting presentable (and "educational") stuff online. Anyway, here is a big guy in a bunny suit to balance out all the women in bunny suits. DAZ Galleries link [x].
I'm still scared to make Iray renders on this newer laptop since it has an AMD graphics card. But, so far, it tolerated this render well. The "joke" in this pic is that I want to use an item that will get vaulted, so if someone sees my render in the DAZ Galleries, the item will say "Inactive." That is the statement I want to make.
Yes, I will be looking in this threat for help getting AI art that I have generated turned into DAZ Studio only renders. The AI generated art seems to almost always get the lighting just right. I always struggle with that.
I have strong mixed opinions on DAZ lighting. I hate "dramatic lighting," because it's dark and I can't see anything. (So I'm going out of my way to avoid it in my works.) The other is that it's guesswork that I might as well just do two renders (one "normal" and one "extra bright") and edit them together in postwork. The biggest issue with bright lights in DAZ is that most people use strong pure white lights and that washes out their images.
My opinions about AI are very different than most people because I value "effort" and skill. If you read the mixing DAZ with AI thread, or any other threads made by AI users, you'll quickly see that they (the users) put in a lot of work to make nicer, presentable results. Sometimes even doing more work or straining their PC further, than just doing a regular old Iray DAZ render. But then, there's results that can't be done or are difficult to do in DAZ, so I understand why they'd go that route.
For my own art, I still think drawing by hand will get me the most accurate and creative results. DAZ only will get me the most consistent results. (Need to get better at texturing though.) And finally, AI is for when I want to mess around, while not in the mood to focus on a more serious project.
I took a risk and purchased CC Caius. The body hair pattern is accurate for my OC. Surprisingly, the skin was good too, at least for the bright lighting I tend to use. DAZ Galleries link [x].
I think I will need to create a hair color that matches. I decided to try making him, after I noticed that the Toon Generations hair I used on Braxus looked similar to my OC's usual style. However, for the colors, I need to decide if I should make him have salt and pepper gray hair or the stylized "mouse gray" hair I use for him. And yes, I gave him mouse colored hair as the 2D toon because his original design/color scheme is based on Mickey Mouse. I even gave him red shorts for the render as an emphasis on this.
Here is a screenshot of my OC (in red) standing next to Caius. Please note the size differences, though I think G9!Ernie is a bit too short. He is meant to be 5'9"...and the Genesis Males tend to be 6' or more. Caius looks like the older standard male height. My OC is also supposed to have an inverted triangle/"Dorito" build but I think it's just too subtle. He looks "average build" in the various angles I've seen him but he looks good.
(My OC and Caius both have the same beard. So I have no idea why it looks different between them. Maybe it's just the combination of my OC's head shape and shortness that the light hits his face differently, so his facial hair looks lighter.)
One final render for the day, because I wanted to use another "Christmas in July 2025" Freebie, before it vanished. (So another render where one of the items used is labeled as "Inactive" in the DAZ 3D Items Used section. Though, I think this one will most likely pop up later, elsewhere.) DAZ Galleries link [x].
Unlike my OC or Braxus or even Caius, I will not be doing a photoset of Calypso!Kelpie. The scene never wanted to light up no matter how many lights I kept trying to fit into The Alchemy Chasm.
I also noticed that TMHL Kelpie for Genesis 9, has no forum topics, before my comment. So I might as well use this forum post of mine as a review. I had her on my wishlist for a while, because I sometimes feel like I need an extremely colorful character. She "base" character shape also reminded me of an AprilYSH character, who tend to be very pale. She's one of those characters who's download files are very compressed (184 MB) and then get bigger once installed (218.7 MB, according to DIM.) It's something to keep in mind, if you're concerned about space, like I am. It's why Caius lives in my SSD now, but he's nearly 1 GB. Kelpie's only flaw is that her fantasy ears are a part of her head shape, so they cannot be applied to other characters. But, she comes with a nearly identical head shape that has normal ears (the only difference). The one thing that surprised me, because I wasn't expecting it, is that her fantasy looks hot pink in the Texture mode and Filament mode of the Viewport. (The attached screenshot just shows the Texture view. It also shows the star-shaped pupils that can hardly be seen in the finished render RIP.)
Back in May, I started trying to make my own toon eyebrows for my personal use. I'm glad that I shelved that project for a couple of months because I'm working on it again. So far, I actually made 7 eyebrows, but one shape (an early one) doesn't look good to me anymore, that I may exclude it. The original goal was for this to be a pack of eyebrows that have several styles that can work with a variety of regular human characters. So I was testing them with the G9 shapes I had installed, and the one character who was an awkward fit on most of them was Claire, by Blue Rabbit. She comes as a shape-only character in the dForce Highlands Gown and Shape for Genesis 9. By my logic, if Claire doesn't look good in any of these, then the pack I'm making is not as versatile as I thought.
Long story, short, I am trying to draw a custom eyebrow for Claire, that I feel fits her head shape. (Doesn't match with the product's eyebrows.) I will polish up what I make and mirror it in GIMP. The problem with Claire was that my other eyebrows were either too high or too thick for her. (The other brows being high surprised me, since I was drawing them pretty low. But I guess I wasn't low-enough.) I did have a slimmer design, but I feel like this character needs more rounded brows. The other was too arched, but I tend to draw everyone with stylized arched brows.
And of course, in an ironic twist, the eyebrows I was planning to remove are ones that look good on her. I'll try to see if I can tweak/edit these rejects against the new thing I'm drawing.
Actually, after comparing the two shapes. I decided to redraw them anyway. (Notice how much of the original gray I removed.)
Here is how they look like on Claire, completed.
Finally, there is one last eyebrow pair I feel obligated to do because I use them a lot in the non-Filament renders -- the ones for FaberInc's Nahuel. Interestingly, Giacomo's Spock-like eyebrows are the closest match in terms of size. All I need to do is figure out how to edit the ends, so they can curve down "normally." Hopefully, I won't redo them like I did with Claire.
(I will work on these tomorrow, because Thursday evenings are my busiest days.)
For these eyebrows, the real challenge will be re-saving them as H. Materials. I want to do it like the default colors, but with the shades that I use for my OCs, so I won't keep hunting them down every time. I have made attempts because they look like they're saved as H. Materials. But tmy results either turn the whole eyebrow prop the came color without opacity, or save it out as only accepting the OC's opacity. In the icon, it says "RLA," so I may need to figure out how to use that. Unfortunately, I fear that's one of the DAZ settings whose information that's locked behind a video...
I have finished the last eyebrows that belong to Nahuel. I hope there's a semi-toony resemblance in him now.
Ironically, my OC who uses Nahuel's eyebrows in the Iray version doesn't look like him with the approximated Nahuel eyebrows.
He does, look like himself with these other eyebrows I drew that are based off another OC.
I feel like everyone thinks Filatoon = soft-shaded style because y'all aren't 2D illustrators, that somehow I have accidentally developed a distinct Filament style. Things like this are why I just don't bother with promoting anything I publicly upload. The interest in it is low as it is too niche. People who cry about wanting "originality" don't realize that it is, in fact, a curse if you wish to appeal to the majority. You're too different and no one wants that.
Another quick limited time freebies render. DAZ Galleries link [x]. Other thread I posted it on [x].
This morning, on some DAZ-focused Discords I was part of, there was a poll asking for reasons we (DAZ Users/DAZ Store Buyers) look for things to purchase. "Cool/Needed," "Fan Art," and "NSFW" were separate options on that poll. My problem with the poll, which feels more like nitpicking, was that "Cool/Needed" overlaps with Fan Art and NSFW. Every one of us DAZ Users has similar but every specific needs. I'm pretty sure the answers for that poll all skew towards "Cool/Needed," because most of us are buying for our rendering projects -- whether they be for stories/games or to create content for the paying subscribed audience.
Anyway, I tend to buy more Fan Art and things that seem relevant to my OC stories (even if I do not make "proper" DAZ renders with them.) In this case, I recently bought the Pathfinder Mech by Mely3D because it looks like a cross between ED-209 (adorable, trigger-happy mech from RoboCop) and D.Va's "Meka." If I ever wanted to do something RoboCop themed, at least as a drawing reference, I may need to scale down the Pathfinder mech to 60% to be of ED-209's canon height. The character I've loaded up for comparison is the bad boy, CHB Lorenzo for G9. (Yes, he is a bad boy, because the other G9 men Cherubit has made, Thomas and Gabriel, their descriptions describe their personalities as well as their physical beauty, but Lorenzo just gets described as "tall and handsome," with no mention of his personality. So he is likely mean and/or up-to-no-good. X'D)
Here is a bonus screenshot that shows this DAZ asset in its default 100% scale load. (The mech is rigged and can be posed by selecting its limbs and body.)
For my OC story, I need to decide if I should use the Pathfinder Mech in its full-size (my "mech character" has a hologram pilot to give the impression that she is not self-driving but she is) or scaled down. I have barely described her in my WIP as being too large to fit through a door, yet she can stand and sit down inside a room without bothering the occupants. I need to color the DAZ Asset in 3D Coat with my own custom color scheme because, in the story, she is supposed to be red/black/chrome with yellow accents. The texture Add-On has a red and black, but not in the way I imagine my character should have it. But, I'm going to put the mech coloring project on the figurative WIP shelf because I need to finish those eyebrows before there is a paid product that does the same thing.
PS. I need to pick up Thomas one of these days. My runtime needs a "Golden Retriever Guy," and my OC who is basically a "Great Pyrenees" doesn't count.
G9 is easily becoming my favorite figure because my rule of judging DAZ figures is how easy it is to recreate my OCs and G9 stays winning.
In this WIP, I'm trying to make Ernest's best friend/right-hand man, and didn't really need to try that hard and got close-enough in one sitting. (He's the big guy.) Unfortunately, he uses some unavailable morphs by AOBB, but he mostly uses M3D Mauro HD as a base. I need to redo Ernest's body and it seems like Wagner 9 + SY's "Tortilla Chip" body can work but I have to figure out how to zero out Wagner's feet/create a foot neutralizing morph because they look "innaccurate" for my OC.
Okay, I hurried up and finished the G9 Toon Eyebrows freebie I was working on. It's currently uploaded to DeviantArt, so I'll post the links here because it is still technically considered my art and has renders I made.
The dA link: https://www.deviantart.com/mimicmolly/art/Extra-Styles-for-G9-Toon-Brows-1225541507
The promo photoset that had to be posted separately. https://www.deviantart.com/mimicmolly/art/1225542751
I actually did want to post these on Renderhub and Renderosity too, but couldn’t get any beta testers. These other places are marketplaces with buyers who will affect the product ratings, so that's why I'm not bothering with uploading over there until I know it works for others.
While I could've made a separate thread for them, I feel that there's a low demand for this product/freebie to even exist. So making a separate thread seems pointless. (Besides, I hate having to do any marketing.) I've enjoyed working on this project and using it, so that's where all my satisfaction lies.
I don't know how Daz created their H.Mat color presets for the Toon brows, because saving a H.Mats created a file containing way more information that what is inside one of the H.Mat color presets by Daz, but it's not too hard to create them manually by modifiying your color presets to make them act like the presets from Daz.
The main changes:
I also created metadata for them, looking at how Daz did it. It's currently looking like that in Smart Content:
(I added LEM as a prefix because Extra Styles for Toon Brows felt a bit too generic and I wanted to avoid possible name conflict if someone else decided to create their own extra styles).
I used the main picture in your Deviantart message, just slightly ajusted to end with a 10:13 picture.
If it's okay with you, I can attach the metadata with the H.Mats color presets, with your picture used as a thumbnail, to another message.
Edit: I forgot, but thank you for the freebies :)
@Elor you can attach both the metadata and the h.presets here as a reply. I'll try to repackage it later today and re-upload. Thank you.
The "original" product name was even more generic. It was just "Toon Brows" as it's written in the folder they're all found in. '^^;
Hopefully I didn't make any mistake when archiving the relevant files
To keep the information about what this about, I archived a Metadata folder with a LEM Extra Styles for Toon Brows inside, this way even with the renaming done by Daz forums, it should still be easy to know what the archive was about.
In case you have some doubt about how to import metadata, the whole process is explained here, with the difference that the product to look for is 'LOCAL USER LEM Extra Styles for Toon Brows':
https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/738806/render-presets-for-agent-unawares-skydomes
@Elor Thank you. It worked and I've updated the deviantART .ZIP file. Now, I will try to see if I can redo the promo pics to hopefully, repost to Renderosity and Renderhub. That way people who aren't on deviantART can at least get a chance at getting it, if they want it. Might even repost it here, but without the ReadMe, so the attachment is lighter.
Early this morning, after waking up to go to the bathroom and returning to bed, my mind compared my Cinnamon Bunny Boy OC to Damascus Steel. So naturally, now that I have time I decided to try to create a Damascus Steel skin texture as a drawing reference. To get this look, I used a Wikimedia/Creative Commons pic, made a tiled texture and stamped it on G9 with 3DCoat. I'm going to see if I can make it like a tattoo just for this one character. Decided that he should have these markings on his arms, and lower body. I originally wanted markings on his face, but decided that he should be "conveniently pretty" since I need to design my OCs as if I'm trying to market them.
This is going to make me sound like a hater, but I'm glad that there's no more prolific 8k texture add-ons anymore. I avoided the PA responsible for this bloat, while they still had a shop here. I only bought this item because I wanted to support the other PA who modeled this, now vaulted, outfit. I will just manually reduce the image size to 4k, for my SSD. I doubt it will get an update. 4k makes no difference to me since I feel everything I do is non-photorealistic.
(I'm aware of the irony of my complaint and then sticking this big phone photo as an attachment. But this is the only way I can share "proof" of this finding without sharing any full texture maps, albeit reduced quality, in the pic.)
I will usually check the product info for 8k. If the asset has such textures (or too many of them and they are all implied to be 4k) I will skip the product. It takes up too much space, and possibly UV-mapped poorly. I had seen a very large set get glowing reviews, and checked the product page, only to see that it said 8k textures and not "up to 8k textures," so I ended up removing it from my wishlist.
For this item in question, I am scaling the textures to 4k in GIMP. MS Paint does a messy job, especially in Windows 11.
