    North Carolina & Montana.

Florida suffers from Paradise Syndrome*.  I have visited it on and off since 1956 and have lived in Florida for a couple decades.  I moved back to western NY State 9 years ago.  However, Florida is still a great place to visit if you have some discretionary money, and like the sun, beach, theme parks, boating, or sitting in trailer parks remembering days gone by.  Hotel/motel prices are very reasonable because of the intense competition. Roads are great but congested in the big cities.  Avoid Miami.

*Paradise Syndrome: Whereby a paradise loses its luster because it becomes too popular and too easily accessible.  Overgrowth, commercialization, creeping sleezy.

North Carolina is great. Especially the Outer Banks The only downside is the hurricanes.

Arizona is only a good place for retirees for about 3-5 months (unless you're a golf nut who'll tee-off in 110º weather). We're already steady in the 90º range, fortunately the nights are still cool. Phoenix is headed the same way as Portland. The median for a decent (no bugs, gang-bangers, or sub-woofers) is around $1,300/month +utilities. What you northern folks pay to heat your house in the winter, we pay to cool ours in the summer. On the other hand, gas is about $2.15/gal and food is reasonable, with good sales if you're savvy. It's a two hour drive to the mountains, and only 8 hours to the Pacific. devil

But it's a dry heat, right?  I'm from Massachusetts.  When I went to deal with my father's property when he passed, it was in TwentyninePalms in CA.  High desert.  He had a little cinderblock homesteader cabin.  It was Oct. 28 to Nov. 2.  It was 85 every day.  I was working in that little hot box and moving furniture and things.  I was OK, I wasn't feeling like I was going to die.  Back here, 85 would have come with high humidity and I'd be melting and it would be miserable.

    Dana

Normally it's pretty dry, but from June to September we enter the "Monsoon". The predominant high pressure area moves south and east scooping moisture from the gulf. Our normal 18% humidity jumps to 40%. That phenomenon doesn't reach Twentynine Palms. In fact, it barely reaches the AZ border. To you easterners, 40% doesn't sound bad, but it might as well be 90% compared to our normal parched state.

Morning. First light gleaming through green and gold treetops and concrete towers and quiet enough to hear faraway birdsong this holiday friday, everyone leaving town for long weekend seems to have left and us stay at homes grateful for some freeway peace and quiet :)

...yeah back in October of 2015 so this is a bit of a surprise.

Trouble is housing here in Portland is gwadawful expensive and getting worse by the month.  Even a studio in the inner neighbourhoods can go for more than the amount of my monthly benefit cheque and there is a shortage of low/fixed income rentals due to all the gentrification and upscale development that has been going on.  For long term residents like myself it seems Portland is becoming Silicon Valley North price wise even though we don't have near as many big tech firms as the Bay Area does (basically Intel and that is it)..

As I do not drive, moving to the outskirts is not an option as everything is miles apart, transit out there is poor at best, and many areas don't even have sidewalks (including along busy streets with 40 - 45 mph traffic). I like taking my daily walks, going to the park, to do my grocery shopping or just to socialise with friends.  The way I see people in the burbs drive, I'd be too afraid to walk around unless it was absolutely necessary (and the outskirts are where many of the local gangs were pushed out to as well cirme is actually worse in the burbs than the inner city). On top of that, rents in the outer areas are rising as well, in some cases by 30% or more even for really cheaply built apartments with cardboard thins walls, poor insulation/weatherising, inefficient electric baseboard heating (seemingly always placed right below the windows), and frequent mould and moss issues due to the damp climate here.

In short, for myself, it would be like going to the "bad place" while still alive.

hoping it doesn't come to that

...not many in my book these days if you want to get away from winter.  Florida is slowly sinking while Arizona is too bloody hot during the summer, you get dust storms, there are too many poisonous critters, and if you live in Phoenix, you pretty much need a car to get around.

Yeah, but if they get an inch of snow everything stops.  They don't get much real winter.

...kind of like here in Portland (save for this year here), but there have been times they got socked pretty good (especially in the interior), and then there's that freezing rain stuff which does hit that region.

Save for Hawai'i there aren't many places in the US that get mild to warm temperatures all year long, but the living costs there make the inner environs of Portland look like a low rent district. Outside of that, it's territories like Guam (way too many "creepy crawlies" there for me) or Puerto Rico.

...cooking, reminds me I need to do something about dinner tonight.  Turns out my gut issues the last couple days were due to a bug that has been going around. Feeling better in that department today but now have a sore throat and sinus aches.  Rarely do I get sick like this but when I do it seems like it tries to make up for all the years it missed me.

Probably get take out because the kitchen is a mess.  Would like to make my buffalo (as in meat, not seasoning) tacos but it requires a lot of prep space, pretty much all the rings on the stove.

Mega Millions draw tomorrow, 30$ million, that's about 680,000$ a year for 30 years after taxes.C'mon the Kid needs to move to a better climate.

Things that annoy: People who say (singular) "verticee" instead of "vertex" in turorials. Come on people - one vertex; many vertices. It isn't hard! (just like vortex/vortices, matrix/matrices, helix/helices, radix/radices, I could go on . . .)
