...interesting he isn't Tween Justin.  Since that was the name for Julie 5's male counterpart.

Anyway, he will find a home in my library...whenever I can scrape up some zlotys.

In another thread somewhere, DAZ_Steve (I think) specifically said that there would be no Justin, whether Tween or Young Teen, because his sales had been terrible. Same with Hiro, which resulted in Kenji. I'm not sure I get the logic in not reusing the name if you're producing an equivalent figure anyway, but ... whatever.

I never understood that, myself. Characters like Freak I can understand, where his niche was pretty much broken-up into characters like Gianni and Ivan. But Kenji and Ryan are pretty much Hiro and Justin simply under different names. If I had to guess the strategy behind that, I suspicion would be that they figured that a new name would make the characters feel newer and more interesting. "No, this isn't the same old Hiro that you clearly didn't like, this is 'Kenji', he's COMPLETELY new and not at all a shadow of his predecessor!" "This is TWEEN Ryan, you've NEVER seen anything like him before in our store!" "Why don't you *$BUY$* them and see just how different and unexplored they are! :D"

Yeah I think it's stupid too. I still want to call them Hiro and Justin. The new names don't really make sense for the character, they're just randomly plucked out of midair.

Kenji sounds like he belongs with Keiko. Aiko+Akira, Hitomi+Hiro would have made more sense. Ironically failed mismarketing over Hitomi/Hiro and Aiko was probably why Hiro 5 failed in the first place.

The product page lists Ryan at 5'1"; the CDC growth chart for boys says that this is a very tall 12 year old, or an average 14 year old.  So, perhaps more a 'young teen' than 'tween', depending on where you personally put the definitions.

Hopefully, the DIM anomaly that keeps me from seeing (let alone downloading) new purchases will get fixed soon and I can try it out...

I don't know how accurate that is or where they collect their data.  I'm sure there is some variation between countries and regions.  My son is 12 and about 5' maybe 5'1" and most of his friends in scouts and karate are all about the same height or taller than he is at around the same age group 12 to 13.  I think they are all pretty typical American kids.

Tween Ryan 7 measurements courtesy of Measure Metrics for DAZ Studio:

    • Height: 5'3" (161 cm)

Measure metrics in the program puts him as: 5'3.35 / 1.609m.

So he's even taller than 5'1.

I have picture of baseball / softball team where we are all 11 & 12 years old and I tower over all the boys by almost a foot so that sounds right. This was in Florida and we were all had much outdoor activities and very well fed too. All of those boys had growth spurts later where they caught up or grew taller.

I am still amazed that DAZ makes any money at all

Same here...  Bought a lot of Genesis 3.  Don't have much interest in a tween figure, but some other items in the Pro bundle look good and seems hard to pass up for just over 6 bucks.

I hope if I buy this, it doesn't ruin a future G3 buy at 90% off!

Maybe the kid figures don't sell as well?  I highly doubt I would buy him if it wasn't for the 90% discount.  Gateway Tween?  laugh

I don't know.  I spent $50 here on a day I wasn't planning to spend anything because of it.  Got a couple of items on my wishlist that showed up at around 45% off with the 10% purchase.  I'd say they are doing all right.

  • yah... same here... now I'm wondering if I missed such an offer for his female counterpart or if maybe daz would be so nice to make such an offer :D

That would be cool wouldnt it?

    definitley!

Could be.  Given the relatively little amount of chatter that happened in the Tween Julie thread... and how on the fence so many people appeared to be... they may have decided to float Ryan out there at such a great price in order to spur interest in the pair.

To be fair, with the direction that DAZ has headed with the new figure of the month model, I imagine that it's getting hard to both drum up interest in each successive new iteration AND to do something that hasn't already been tackled first by one of the PAs.  As it is, there have already been more G3 base figures than the whole run of G2F/M, even if you include the Minotaur and Reptilian, and I can't imagine that there are many who've bought every single one this time around.

I still see a need for freak. Neither Ivan nor Gianni really work for that category. I am wondering with daz practically giving tween Ryan away if this really is the last teen/tween we'll see. They can't be making money with him. If it were up to me I'd probably bundle Ryan with his counterpart and do tween release with both genders

Maybe some of their latest figures did much better than they expected so they decided to be generous, who knows : )

I just wish the Pro Bundle had the male parts in it so that my guys would finally have their genitals but I guess it makes sense not including it in young teen figures so now I'm waiting for another good deal on either Kimo or Ivan :D

Woah... I didnt even notice that the pro bundle was that cheap! I guess ill upgrade then.

    Yup, agreed.

  • This is actually my first G3 male character. Been using M6 and his variations ever since G3 showed up. Totally unplanned purchase, but, whatever.

Two threads on Tween Ryan discounts have been merged with this one to contain all the information in one spot.

My theory is textures look better squished than stretched. So DAZ makes all the figures tall. When you use the dials to make them shorter, the textures get a bit squished. And if you make them taller, those same textures are stretched, but with less issues when going from 6-foot 2-inches to 6-foot 5-inches than going from 5-foot 10-inches to 6-foot 5-inches.

DS does a decent job of upsizing images when necessary, but it's not perfect. Back when 4.8 was in Beta, a lot of conversation centered around a "cross-hatch" anomaly with some of the textures. It appeared when a "regular" sized texture was being stretched over a large object. I suspect it was never an issue with the 3Delight render engine. (I did an Iray image with the barn from Barn Yard back then, and saw the issue...)

This is a good theory - or at least a good practical thing for it.

    Meet Alex, Ryan's older brother!

Rendered in Daz Studio 4.9 with Iray, no post-work.

I made my first render with Ryan and his friends here: http://www.daz3d.com/gallery/#images/200921, I also tried some of the clothes and one of the hairs on a genesis 3 female character and I think that  the clothes I tried fits nicely and  the hair I tried also ( I just used fit control to make the cuffs of the pants to fit into the shoes and make the top a bit looser over the chest: http://www.daz3d.com/gallery/#images/201586 (the pose is also from the Ryan bundle)
