You can use DIM and Daz Connect at the same time, and since Daz Connect can't install all content yet (things that need powerloader, plugins, non-Studio content) they should be used side-by-side for at least the near future. DIM and Daz Connect can be connected at the same time as well, so logging in to one won't kick you out of the other.
Additionally, 4.9 has a "Work Offline" option and you can choose for it to not prompt you again to connect on startup.
So in theory, if a user decides not to use DS4.9, then they will not be able to use any new files if all the new files require DAZ connect, correct?
Say I do decide to install 4.9 and allow a one time authenticate, how will DAZ connect install files if a user is not using DIM?
one question that maybe has nothing to do with this but I want to ask.
If I buy a new machine and install DAZ Studio on it, it will be possible to copy also the installed content to that new machine (correct pathes) and everything will work fine? Or will I get problems with licenses or so?
That's actually what this thread was all started by. We exposed the ability to download offline packages from your product library so you can install things through Daz Connect without being online.
Instructions for that are over here: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/990392/#Comment_990392
The files won't have to be redownloaded, but if you don't copy the database over to the new machine you would have to tell Studio to "install" the products again so it would scan and see that the products are installed. There is the possibilty that a simple script could be written to scan the directories to have it automatically "install" any products it found there, so it could be automated for larger backups/restores.
Offline packages could also be transferred and installed on multiple machines without any additional steps, if you want to go that direction.
Thanks for the info guys. Just wondering because it sounds like something id do.
I see three new releases. Dragon Queen, Linsey for G3F and Medieval Storage room. All three are listed as Endrypted DAZ Connect download only. Will all new releases be Connect only?
I think those are just to encourage people to try Daz Connect, as they're free with a purchase of $49.
As you noticed, there were only three new products released today. So yeah, it was definitely a promotional thing.
Additionally any product that wants Poser or Carrara compatibility would have to keep non-encrypted downloads in order to work.
I see that all today releases are for Daz Connect. If this is what we have to expect for the future, I think my wallet be very happy - and other stores will be happy, too. I fully understand that vendors want to be secure against plagiators, but I too want to be secure against any kind of intrusion into my computer – at least from private companies' side. Governmental intrusion is another story, which is not easy to prevent. I read that the method used by Daz is criticised by privacy groups. So, no cloud for me; thank you. This is not a special distrust of Daz; just one of my principles.
EDIT: I didn't read Fixmypcmike's latest post; so if there will still be products for manual downlod, Daz and me can stay friends.
"they're free with a purchase of $49"
always funny again
Got to agree with this. Even if its somehow unjustified, I am very, very wary about switching over to 4.9 and using Daz Connect (like I am with any online service of this nature). Perhaps I'm paranoid, but it sounds to me like a perfect recipe for Daz wanting access to our created content files for some reason. Is there anything in place to stop Daz from downloading all our scene files once we're connected?
Well my PC+ membership was up for renewal next month, so I guess this is perfect timing for me to step back.
I'm not entirely sure why we would want you scene files, but the primary things stopping Daz from downloading everything from your computer are these:
1. Sending that sort of data up to our server would be a huge breach of trust and would go against everything we have been trying to build here with the straightforward and honest approach we have been taking with DIM and Daz Connect.
2. We don't have anything to gain from getting random data off of your machine. We make money off of people buying our content so the data we look at is what content people buy and perhaps what do we think a lot of people might buy if it was being promoted, but we get all of that from our database of purchases not anything off of anyone's computer.
3. There is no code in the software to upload data to servers. If you dump the network traffic on an active Daz Studio running Daz Connect you will see that there are many small requests (HTTP requests for files) and all of the data is coming from the server to your computer. It uses some of the same server code that DIM uses the biggest difference is that we store the content files encrypted on the webserver so we can use a fast CDN to transfer the actual content files so we aren't restricted by the capacity of our servers to get the content in your hands.
Thank you for the response DAZ_Rawb - I do appreciate it. It makes me feel a little better, but I'm still pretty wary of anything like this just by default. What can I say? I'm old-skool :)
I'll think about using it.... maybe.... some time in the future...
Be sure you keep a copy of 4.8 before you change over, because the old version is always replaced in the Product Library with the new one. Year after year I read about people bemoaning that they didn't think about keeping a copy and they want to change back.
I'm not reading much about changes to Content Library, or understanding if there's anything new for it. That's all I use, so not feeling a reason to change as I like the DIM.
Also make sure you have backups of plug-ins if you intend to keep using older versions of DS, in case any updates aren't backwards compatible.
How long do I have to hold out? I"m so upset over being forced into Smart Content I'm heading over to RDNA right now to grab the latest outfit for Star.
^Yes!
Having to download and install two files if we don't want to have this thing running is ridiculous on it's own, but even to do that we have to install 4.9 and activate DAZ Connect at least once? ..and if we stay on 4.8 we're just out of luck with certain products (and eventually all I'm sure)? As with the above poster, my wallet and other stores will be happy. I just won't buy anything that doesn't have a manual download.
DAZ, you're making it way too hard to take my money.
Wow, it's the beta threads all over again o.o
You don't need to touch Connect to install or use 4.9 (just make a backup of 4.8 first >.>)
You don't need to go near Smart Content. You don't need Connect or to do anything with your current files. You can tell the signin window to go away and never go near it or do any sort of online thing via Studio itself.
These things were all added but none of the old stuff went away.
Personally I'll be sticking with old DIM content unless there's something I really, really want. I don't like encryption but I have to respect the way they've made every effort to not be privacy invading lockdown types. But they should know that most of their userbase won't understand the technical parts of how it works nor do I think anyone can implement this sort of thing these days without expecting a massive backlash. So I guess despite the explanation pages plastered all over the store it'll be sky is falling for awhile.
Now ... will the sky actually fall? ^^
So it's either upgrade to 4.9 and do as you told to get any new products or stick with the poor member of the family 4.8?This has to be the most embarrassing moment of all times in 3d render community..,pure extortion.
For how long? Sheesh they TOLD us DIM will be going away.
Man I have been so behind since taking on my new job and moving. I haven't had time in almost a year to make any new DAZ artwork. I haven't even gotten to try out iRay at this point. So when I saw this new release, I wanted to know what was up with this whole Connect thing.
I really love DIM. Just being able to launch it periodically and get all latest updates hassle free was worth it to me. But having a pesistent connect service built in gives me a bit of concern. I also have always liked the Smart Content panel, but I used to jump over to my content library routinely because I had lots of custom folders for stuff from RDNA and Renderosity. When I upgraded to 4.8 and realized that I had to re-build all of my content libraries I was pretty disappointed.
What gives me pause more than a persist always connected service (Xbox One already sorta works this way so you don't have to worry about updates) - I am one of those users that was pretty angry when Adobe switched over to a service plan that forced everyone into a subscription. Until my company paid for the service allowing me to have Adobe on my work machine and a second license for home, I stuck with the older CS. Still have them just in case I ever want to re-install. So that was the first thing that came to mind. Is this going to be the future of DAZ? Being forced into an over-priced subscription?
As a PC+ member, the one thing that would make me jump on this is if they integrated a feature that automatically downloaded any daily free items for you. I constantly miss out on PC+ freebies because there are so many weeks that I don't have time to be checking DAZ site everyday.
So is DIM going away then with this new Connect thing? I don't currently have DAZ installed on more than one machine, but if in the future I wanted to set it up on my work computer and also on a home computer will that be a possibility? I know most software now a days works this way. They allow up to two licenses which I am fine with.
Questions:
1. On Michael 7 bundle it reads compatible with DAZ 4.9. Is this encrypted content or is it not? It does not help if I have to wait for the cache to clear at night in order to see this on the details page, when the "Today only" offer will end in the same turn, which makes it attractive to buy the Pro Bundle of Michael right now. But I'd refrain from doing so, if this is encrypted content only.
2. Is the problem with Connect resolved, that renders it not usable on Linux? Support did not want to know about it, so I'm rather sure it still won't work. That'd be sad.
3. What is going to happen about textures? I read that in 4.8 there were IRay bugs and for 4.9, where these are fixed, textures need to be redone. What happens if I use these overhauled textures, if they are going to be overhauled at all, with 4.8?
Not in 4.9 it won't, and even if it does disappear in say 3 weeks, it's not going to stop manual downloads of content you already bought, or using content you already installed. All DIM does is download zip files and then unzip them. You can do this manually if you want. I already have everything I've bought downloaded and backed up, so there is no point moving to Connect for it.
If all new content becomes encrypted Connect-only then I probably won't buy much (if any) of it so it wouldn't really matter. Of course the Connect-only stuff I did buy would be installed and then immediately manually backed up, because the files still exist and in encrypted parts can be rebuilt (at least well enough for personal use) without encryption as an emergency backup.
My point was that installing 4.9 will not lock you into some terrible system. They may move to some terrible system afterwards, but if you want the bug fixes now then it is possible to have them without any of the new Connect part.
1. Michael 7 isn't encrypted. The only encrypted content right now is the promotion "freebies" that were released today. Older stuff is completely unaffected.
3. The texture files don't change, but the surfaces tab settings do. As far as I know; I haven't seen the fixes but in the beta the Iray fix took out a lot of the red, which you put back by adjusting the translucency colour or whatever it was (the blueish one) to be more red. To go backwards I would assume you do the opposite. (I haven't tested this on Live.)
I have absolutely no plans to use DAZ Connect.
I install things manually, as I like to sort things in subfolders (otherwise, it's a mess).
However, I am forced to use DIM to see what products have been updated.
If DIM eventually goes away, can we please, please, please get a "last updated" field in the Product Library? Many other stores (e.g., Rendo) provide that.
It's very likely "optional" as e.g. facebook changes are "optional": At some point there is no more optional and the changes are forced upon you.
Think about it, the whole DRM is pointless if you still can download your stuff without it. So you bet that sooner or later everything that is going to be released will have DRM. There might be exceptions, though. I expect "old" content to not get DRM, simply because the cat is out of the bag already, no point in adding DRM at a later time. Common sense overall.
@Ix: Thank you!
Sorry folks, I didn't intend to precipitate a range war here. Honest.
Of course I knew the official release of 4.9 was coming; I just didn't know that it would be today. (I didn't get the email until 2:30 or so this morning And seeing that 'offline authorization' link on a download page that didn't have one only hours earlier..., well, it just raised the question, "Is this one of those 'encrypted DAZ Connect only' products that we were told to expect?" (The item in question was Hellenic for Genesis 3 Female(s), by the way.) "Am I going to need to upgrade to 4.9 to use this?"
I've read all about all of the cool new features incorporated into 4.9, and the improvements to the Iray render engine are a pretty persuasive reason to make the upgrade, all by themselves. However....
My biggest concern about this whole deal is the question of how this is going to affect my bandwidth-usage. I have cellular internet, with a rigorously-enforced data ceiling (and downright obscene overage charges), so this is a serious issue to me. It's bad enough that Windows 10 insists on being online 24/7 (and burning up my bandwidth with its incessant updates!); I'd really prefer that DAZ not get into the act! And I'm even less enthusiastic about allowing them a 'foot in the door' in the first place.
No plans for the 'foreseeable future'? That's rarely as long a time-frame as most people like to believe....
Will everything downloaded via DAZ Connect be encrypted? For example, if I redownloaded Micahel 7 (to use the example above) via DAZ Connect, will that download be encrypted? If not, I think we need a further designation to indicate if the content will be encrypyted.
