I have my DS 4.8 installed to C:/ Program Files which is where I thought programs have to be installed, all my purchased content is on my external E:/ drive...if I install the 4.9 update through DIM will it not automatically overwrite my 4.8 install as all updates in the past have done? How did you who have both copies achieve this?  I may just wait until the new system is ready and start clean with 4.9 and install DIM to d/l or maybe just try Daz Connect instead, a more streamlined approach would be nice instead of having to maintain 2 programs to do the job of one.

If you install the full release version of 4.9 it will overwrite your current full release version of 4.8. If you install the public beta version of 4.9 you will get a near complete version of 4.9, it just has a bug in the offline package installation, but everything else should work fine. It won't continue to get updates so you will want to shuffle over to the release version of 4.9 after you are happy with how it works, but it should let you dip your toe in the water for a bit before you fully switch over.

Kharma, It didn't ask me where to put 4.9, it did it. The only thing that happened was the popup your computer does asking permission to download the files, then it appeared on my desktop. I was looking at my 4.8 folder and lo and behold, the 4.9 was there too. You definitely can have both side by side and NO the 4.9 did not overwrite my 4.8. The new version also kept the studio exactly as I had it.

Jon, correct me if I'm wrong- I read that changes in categories made in 4.8 will show up in 4.9, but not vice versa. True?

That is correct, there is code in there to migrate changes from 4.8 (and DIM)'s tables over to the new 4.9 tables but going back the other direction was too difficult.

  • Uh-oh.  I'm following this post, as well as several others when I found 4.9 offered this morning at the store.

I have a mainframe system for rendering in 3D using DAZ 4.8 that NEVER-NEVER hooks up to the internet.  The reason it does not hook up is because I will NOT get an antivirus program on my mainframe, which will bog down my rendering and CPU speed.

My main content has always been downloaded unto my gateway laptop using DIM, and then transferred over to my mainframe PC.  I utilize the DAZ serial numbers (gratefully) when the need arises.

    Help!

Will it migrate settings from 4.6 pro to 4.9?

I have absolutely no plans to use DAZ Connect.

I install things manually, as I like to sort things in subfolders (otherwise, it's a mess).

However, I am forced to use DIM to see what products have been updated.

If DIM eventually goes away, can we please, please, please get a "last updated" field in the Product Library?  Many other stores (e.g., Rendo) provide that.

I use manual ONLY. Will not hook up or buy products via DAZ Connect. Period.

Ivy- they have said the content that is DIM downloadable will stay that way. They may add Connect as an option, but they are not taking DIM off any products, nor edit-  taking it away for quite some time, nothing specified. They have said that repeatedly.

Hi Novica, I do not use DIMM either .. I use Zips only, where i can load them into a sand box first. and store them in a compressed  FAT32 storage drive for back up.., Back when daz use to have installers I was able to load the installer in a sand box and then load them into my runtime and content directories as I see fit.and Zip them for back up... I like to see what in the files and how they are loaded into my system before i allow anything to sit in my drives. I'm just funny that way.  I always download and install everything through a sandbox..  I have my own reasons for not supporting DRMM (Digital Rights Managed & Maintained) products so please don't try to convince me how great it is I could give you a million reasons why it is not But the forum Mods will just remove it anyway. So I will say I truly have no interest in Daz 4.9 or Daz Connect,..   That Is why you have not heard any more from me about DRM in the threads.  I figure its User Beware and its none of my business how or what people want to do with their systems... . I know! what they say. its the way of the Future, But i won't be participating in this path of it when it comes to the things i buy for 3d...  "No Offence."

When Adobe went creative cloud, I never went to it and I just use my older creative suite software and content I have and I'm still doing just fine with out all that Adobe cloud & DRM software drama that comes with it.,  so I can imagine i will do just as good now with Daz 4.8.   Though I am going to miss buying new content I am sure I'll be able to find thin gs I like other places

The only reason I asked my question is because I just want to make sure i could still use Zips for the content i had in my wished list,  which did say in the product description. they were for daz 4.8.   But now say they are for daz 4.9 And your reply clarified & answered my question so thank you &  Have a nice day.

Ivy, not a problem- when something works well for you there's no reason to change it!

Rawb- that sounds good about the updates, but I'm lucky that I don't have bandwidth limitations, I have a lot available. I need to do updates via DIM because I change out my external hard drive files with the newer, updated ones. But thanks so much for clarifying, it might help someone else.

Ok, so I'm all for updating to 4.9 if this offline stuff works, but here are my concerns I guess, I have no internet at home, aside from on my cell phone but I can't tether.  If I'm able to borrow a family members phone to use as a hotspot to connect long enough to activate 4.9 will that be enough or do you need to connect every time you install a new file?  Satellite internet is the only option really available in my area and my partner refuses to get it since we can use our phones.  So i have to download the offline files to my phone then transfer them to my pc, which is what I have to do now, I just transfer them to dim, but I if it needs to connect every time you want to install a new product, should I save up for another phone?

It brings up that other question. How will you know that you need to download manually?  Do the new files actually have a revision number on them?  Or are we stll guessing like always?

  • DkgooseDkgoose Posts: 1,451

Ok, thanks, sadly I read that before I asked too, one of those days o guess :/

You won't be able to use content available only as Encrypted DAZ Connect content in Carrara. Other items will be fine.

It does not appear that the pool of vendors has increased in any significant way, nor does the output from the individual vendors appear to have increased, so the volume of new content appearing on the market seems to be fairly steady. As more and more new content arrives on the market as DAZ Connect-only, obviously this can only come from the existing volume of new content, which means that the amount of new content that is downloadable via DIM or ZIP will only decrease as time goes on (even more so if and when DAZ scuttles DIM altogether).

I've seen no reason to believe that holdouts like myself -- who have flatly stated that we will not use DAZ Connect and/or buy encrypted content -- will be tempted into giving in, so that means content sales can only decrease. I have also not seen anything from new users or existing users who don't care about DRM (or who even support it) to the effect that they will be buying additional content to make up that decline in sales, so I can't help but wonder how doing this is any kind of win or improvement for DAZ?

Mention DRM to the average consumer, and the reaction is overwhelmingly negative: it's just not the sort of thing that inspires people to get in the game and start spending money. And most of your customers talk of not having enough money to purchase the stuff they want now for themselves, let alone trying to make up for the sales your encyption scheme chase away, even if they wanted to.

I nearly forgot: we already have a check box to hide content we've already purchased from showing up in the store browser, so when can we get one to exclude DAZ Connect items from showing up as well? Many of us won't be buying that stuff, so there's no need to waste our time and bandwidth wading through it all when searching for stuff in the store.

    Thanks...

If you look, most have manual, Dim, AND Connect. So if you mean ONLY Connect items, it would be a waste of their time, until such time they have an abundance of only Connect items. Then it really would be a nice feature, great idea!

This comment is directed for the daz powers to be, and not at the daz users.

I have succumbed to the fact the time is coming when DRM will be only way to get Daz products and I never bought anything genesis 3 anyway.  So i'm going to stop my daz shopping habits now.     It made me cry to make this decision & one I have been contemplating since you at daz announced you would be going to DRM.   So in preparation I have been downloading and backing up everything i have on this site for the last few weeks. tonight afte going through it,  I deleted all my wish listed content accept for 3 items which I will get tomorrow regardless if they are on sale or not. because I did not dare to buy them tonight with all the Store issues & depending If I get credit back to my paypal  or a store credit for a model that I had to get refund for that I purchased & took 6 months for you to tell me you would not be fixing.  Then the last thing will be to remove my credit card stored here at daz and that will be it. I'm done with future purchases  at Daz3d.com. A very sad  & serious decision I did not make lightly considering what I have invested here.  I'm just tired of complaining about daz connect & DRM  , I tired of fighting the politically correct & the hypocrisy here   It really makes me feel like my concerns fall on deaf ears..   So  I'm not sure what bothers me more?  That I truly  feel  that Daz does not care if it looses my business,  or the last 10 years I spent shopping here has finely come to end.  Anyway this will be a perfect way to begin a new year, & end a really crappy week.  I  have a funeral I have to go to  tomorrow.  I will be burying one of my best friend who died of breast cancer that she had been fighting for the last 18 months. so all this DRM daz connect drama is really trivial incomparison.  But never the less DRM is my line in the sand.   Ive enjoyed the daz program and the products i have bought here though out the years and I will continue to enjoy what I have bought for years to come.  So thank you for that .  I wish you guys at daz good luck with your future plans to use DRM. I get it & I'm done .

So wold there be any advantage of taking the time to download all the offline files for my entire library and reinstalling everything? I plan on using dim to update studio to 4.9 but that has an offline package too so I'm assuming if I update now i won't be able to use it till I get an Internet connection to activate the program

You do NOT have to activate 4.9 itself on line, only if you choose to use DAZ Connect. If you continue to use DIM only then upgrading to 4.9 should be no different than upgrading to 4.8

Edit: To add the rather important NOT

    My condolences for your loss.

I also understand your concerns and totally sympathize. I'm halfway through my own backup -- picking off a few last wish-list items as I work my way through my order history -- and then me and my $400-a-month spending habit are out of here, too, and for the exact same reasons. I only hope I can finish before DAZ pulls the plug on the manual downloads -- their assurances that they won't don't carry any weight with me any longer. And when you don't trust the people you're doing business with, well, you have to wonder why you were doing business with them in the first place...

I'm uninitiated into this issue, but I'm someone who uses a plugin to import a lot of DAZ items into Poser (even those without specific DSON support). Does this DAZ Connect thing mean that there may be products I won't be able to do this with in the future?

Exporting Daz Connect products (even those marked as encrypted only) is completely unrestricted, so depending on how you are getting things over to Poser it will likely leave you unaffected.

Depends on what object/figure it is. For genesis 3 that would be quite true, but for (new) non weightmapped objects or genesis/genesis 2, importing true dson/D3D's dson loader script will retain most of the objects functionality; exporting will make it a static prop..... so it does affect poser users quite alot....

You can export as a cr2 from DS.

Hmm, guess I'll have to look into that again, The little experience I have with the cr2 exporter dates back to the DS3 time smiley (and wasn't that good). Thanks fore the reminder; I've more or less forgotten that option.

OK this offline fault in the beta, is it why I cannot find the option to install the offline files in the content tab that I pasted into data install in the cms folder?

I cannot find those 3 freebies at all yet my other connect compatible purchases are all there with the symbol

  • fastbike1fastbike1 Posts: 4,078

I guess I don't understand the frenzied "downloading all my purchases" thing going on. Haven't you all been doing that all along? If not, have you been so fortunate as to have ultra reliable internet serrvice so you could always connect if you needed a file?

I use DIM but it still leaves a copy of the zip in my designated directory. This directory is also part of my periodic backup scheme.
