Look at my Hair

I was very happy to read about the fiberhair export for Iray that I bought LAMH yesterday when it was on sale. I am very happy so far just doing a couple of experiments. The Sasquatch moustach area looks weird so something went wrong there. The warthog fur came out great. I just converted to default Iray shaders on these, except the fiberhair on the Sasquatch is Unshaven.

I never used the LAMH player much in the past because renders were just so slow in 3Delight. I have a good GPU so rendering in Iray is much faster.

Making things looks like fun too so I will try that also.

    I love the fuzzy creatures!

    Great results Lucy, congratulations!

  • ewcarman here is my run with the black wolf and iray. Take a look at how I've setup the materials for both wolf body parts and the fur: I've played with the interactive display until I was satisfied with the blend between the body material (wolf skin) and the fur. I'm also including the light setup that I used:

    http://www.alessandromastronardi.com/test/blackWolfIray.zip

Just a note that I exported the hair increasing the root thickness to 600, but TBH it's a negligible change.
27 minutes render time (GPU only, Geforce GTX 970 4GB), 1500 iterations.
With some more patience one could perhaps do some better shading on the nose (which is too shiny), and maybe some better shading on the fur too, so that it looks less uniform.

I finally had a chance to play with this again yesterday. Unfortunately, I couldn't open the duf files you attached - some sort of error. But I did some more experiments and I believe that I've figured out (in a rudementary sense) what is going on. I see better now what you mean above and I've gotten better results with the black wolf. I still need a little more work on it, but I think I'm going in the right direction.

I've been playing with the other wolves and they use the same fur pattern (obviously) but because of the color variations, any material mismatch between the base wolf and fur isn't obvious and even enhances the effect. I've got a good looking black-gray wolf going now.

I also got the full version of LAMH and have started playing with that. Much smoother to use the Fiber hair than that obj export. That alone is worth the price of admission.

Thank you for your help. I think I'm heading in the right direction.

Woot!  55% off today.  So excited to start using the full version!

I snagged that too. So much to learn... (Stupid 9-5 job.... wink)

You and me both!  I just remind myself that 9-5 job helps pay for my Daz addiction lol.

  • Is it possible to have LAMH Full Installed on more that one machine.. I have LAMH Full on one of my work stations(but LAMH is not very stable on it), so I would Like to install it fresh on my new one. Is there anything special I would have to do to get the fresh install authorised on the new machine.

    Cheers,

Hi Alessandro. I've finally been playing with the fibrehair export and am trying to make a fairly simple hair preset for G3M. I've managed to paint density maps on the face and ears, but for some reason can't seem to paint onto the torso of G3M. Is there a tutorial somewhere on this? I assume I'm doing, or not doing, something simple. Thanks :)

Hi Redz, that's not anything wrong on your end but rather an issue that we are still investigating. I think it has to do with the way UV mapped were designed on the G3 series. I can't make any promises as to when a new LAMH update will be available for download, but there are already some issues collected and addressed in the current WIP version, and we'll try to find a fix also for this one.

One thing you might want to do, if you have a 3D painting application, is to actually paint and export density maps with that, and later use those in LAMH, from the material setup window.

Ah, thanks so much for letting me know. That'll save me pulling my own hair out lol.

    I'll give pre-painted maps a go :)

If you need any help with that le me know. You basically need to produce a white/red map; white is 0 density (no hair), red is full density, and of course one can intermediate values to set density properly. When done, you can load such texture directly in the surface channel (in this case the torso). see the attached images, where I loaded a custom density map which in the 2nd image shows on the torso.

I managed to load a red and white map (after a couple of crashes) but unfortunately it doesn't seem to have any effect on the hair density :( will try again tomorrow. Thanks for your help

  • Only wanted to mention that I was finally able to use the White Tiger with Fiberhair export in Iray - well, with a few crashes and DAZ Studio refusing saving the final scene. Other than that the result is stunning IMO, in some parts even photoreal. :) Full image is in my DeviantArt gallery.

I hope that LAMH will be further improved. :)

    Looks great,

I'm sure Kendall will ensure that the new LAMH will be a good one.

Excellent detail on the tiger. We are working on it, making lot of changes and keeping an eye especially to stability that on plugins it's often hard to achieve, especially when the host application is due to unexpected and massive changes.

  • Certain parts of the G3 models are "problematic".  The parts that most people use work though.  I'm fairly close to a fix for G3 textures.  It is possible to output the density maps from LAMH, take them into GIMP or Photoshop and then work on the maps.  It is the color intensities that matter.  Only RED and WHITE.  A red containing Green and Blue will not help.  I usually do my custom maps in grayscale and then colorize to Red/White.

What is the latest version of the full version of LAMH?

The last beta version I seen, and the LAMH website seem to not been updated in awhile.

    Thanks

Latest version is the one currently in store, i.e. 1.5.15 for Windows, 1.5.01 for OSX. There haven't been other beta releases after that, but development has indeed continued.

Thanks Alessandro! I will do that on my lunch break.  I take the laptop back and forth so I can work on stuff during my breaks.  and I am very fortunate in that my boss doesn't care if I do other stuff as long as the work is done at the end of the day.

I actually installed the Mac beta for 1.5.15, because I couldn't get the tab panel to open in Daz Studio 4.8 or 4.9.
Is the 1.5.01 the one I should be using?
    Thanks.
