Major deal breaker for me and I hope they reverse the decision. I'm using the models for videogame characters. I can buy an interactive license for the last male, but I'm pretty sure I legally can't just sell Jason Momoa's likeness.
It's pushed me away from daz originals for the past few releases as even if I don't recognize them, I could be wrong. I no longer feel confident that these characters are viable for my use case.
I do, and I often change skins, but unless I go extreme (and I don't want to), it's often easy to see the underlying features if they are distinct enough. Besides, it's safer to mix the characters that aren't very close lookalikes to begin with.
it makes the cart $10 cheaper yes, as long as its DO products. And also yes, if premier and you still have your free bundle coupon, you can get it free, but I was referring to using what you migh have available nw to save money on todays products. without the coupons, and the 10 as a bonus... or the free stuff. i only had 4 tokens so I would end up with 72% off, but its higher pushin 80 or so if you have 8 tokens on DO products. I still had my free bundle coupon so used it on Cate 9. Free. bought nothing else.
the Cate 9 logo is pretty much the exact same as the original X-Files logo. similar font too
i don't think Cate 9 is that close to Gillian Anderson, I think it's different enough but yet carrying the same "vibe" as her without looking too close to her. You can mix in other heads from other characters, like do 50% Cate 9 with 20, 10, 20 of 3 others or 50% victoria 9 etc.
All day long
The last promo on the character page is almost 'photo-quality'
Really gorgeous character (from the promos), one of the best DO models in quite some time... Great to see a mature model too. Skin detail looks great and - combined with the sculpt - looks very fitting with the blurb (for once!)
Fantastic looking piece of work
I got Minerva when her (discontinued) Christmas bundle was free/super discounted, before existing core bundles were ruined redone in the character/add-on format. Her character bundle still shows up in the Premier Free selection once in a while, though, in case you or others want to keep an eye out.
I also have Snow Queen and CC Catalina, both with elder alternates. Already owning several G9 fem characters around Cate's age is the main reason I am skipping her, along with me focusing more on fantasy/SF art.
I love that it looks like she's got a C-section scar and stretch marks, and a belly button that looks like they often do postpartum. :)
I'm going to get her because I fear she won't last, it's so clear who she looks like. But can we get a Muldur to go with Scully. I have been noticing the lookalikes proliferating. I morph them at least a bit so they look a bit different/
I doub tit will go anywhere. There are other characters still up that definitely look like celebs. These are just the ones I recognise from a glance:
Aro 9 is the spitting image of Jason Momoa
Thomas 9 looks way too much like Alan Ritchson
Wagner 9 Do I even need to say who...
It's been a trend in the male models for a while now, likely with more I don't recognise...
Thanks for the heads up, it's much appreciated. Could just be me and bad timing I suppose, but I only ever see her with 30% discount, and for some reason she's $10 more than the other Daz Originals to start with. Surprising really since she was one of the first as far as I can tell.
I do like her face though, and I gotta have that texture!
Yes, she was the 5th (& her counterpart Nikolai aka Santa the 6th) per @doubledeviant's list of the G9 core figures. She does have a nice face. I really intend to use her more, now I have a new computer.

But back to Cate. I'd love to see pictures here with her outfits, since I might be interested in some of them down the road.
Am I the only one who thought the promo pic for the Business Casual bundle makes it look like they're about to engage in a rap battle?
This is what I said. Who uses the figures as is except in a one off image (like for a "fun" forum contest)? If you're selling the images, I would hope you're taking a few minutes to customize the faces at a minimum.
I'm not going to bother responding and explaining again since you've made an assumption that I'm making a video game (I am not) and then based the whole response on it, ignoring further explanation I've already given (which destroys the other assumption, that I do not mix my characters), so I'll leave you to your highground.
The videogame reference wasn't aimed at you, it was aimed at pancake. I think you owe midgard229 an apology.
Indeed I do!
So, I officially apologize (and leave my previous post unedited so that there's a track).
This is what I get for checking forums after a night of broken sleep.
It happens. I won't go into the things I say after too little sleep, I might get banned
I think you are both missing something very important to the use case that pankake said: 'interactive license'.
I know most people think of Daz use in games as Pre rendered images in VN. That is certainly the majority. But if you are requiring the interactive license, then you can expect some dinamism and some (i imagine) may include a character creator. So, one thing is to customize a character one creates, another is not being able to just use the morph of core characters or requiring to make a custom of each of them....so a custom work so others can make their custom....right.
Also. Even on non interactive, there are those just starting with little knowledge and not with a large library; even if they try mixing all their characters end up looking the same, maybe even more than if they had used their stock faces. Something 'unique' and good out of the box is what newer creators will be more atracted, and what if they don't know that particular 'famous' person?
I recently heard of a video game (made with daz renders) banned from Steam because someone (probably an AI) thought it was showing real people. From the few pics i saw, it was not about likeness(i think), and probably an AI error because the author made decent renders. Is not far fetched that at some point the automation (or ill intended trolls) will make 'likeness' flag. Having a strong likeness in a part of a character DNA could potentially make a game be flagged because mixing does not remove all those 'unique' characteristics that make a lookalike so good. Worst if daz also mimics the likeness in the textures details, you are not only required to mix, you are required to made extra face changes and just to be sure never use a daz core texture with the morph it came with.
I wouldn't mind Daz selling look-a-likes if they were clearly marked as such so I could avoid them. I don't know every celebrity.
I'm not making a pre-rendered VN. It adds a level of danger to using any kind of in-game appearance randomization as all bets are off on what % a specific blend shape will get.
Even dialling 50% of a very distinctive celebrity makes a character that looks very much like them.
If I want to use 80% of A and 20% of B, then A cannot be a whole swathe of characters that clearly look like real celebs.
Even if it can be managed to a point where it's DEFINITELY not going to invite legal trouble- it still looks extremely tacky to have Loki and Reacher show up in an indie game. Same goes for costumes that are very clearly rip offs of extremely iconic outfits like Drizzt or Attack on Titan.
Like I say, I've got no problem with clearly marked content that can't be used in such a fashion, but offering established actors in pop culture then charging interactive licenses for them is....a bit sketchy tbh.
whats a VN?
Visual Novel
As someone who is also writing a VN but also someone who's idea of a celebrity is Ronnie Barker or Richard Wilson, Toyah Wilcox or Susan Penhaligon, I don't really have any idea if the characters I create look like modern celebs and I don't purchase any based on them looking like someone famous (with the exception of a G8 I bought the other day who clearly looks like Helena Bonham Carter, but I wanted the materials more than the morph). I don't use any of them out of the box though, they all get modified to a certain extent.
That will be next month, with the alternate character of "Denise" from Twin Peaks.
