Ah, well... There's that! Yes, there are a shocking number of products out there where the jpgs have artifacts. I wouldn't convert normal maps for reasons discussed in that thread and because of color shift. (No, I don't think that.
)
You know, it takes a lot of compression to produce artifacts like that! But pngs are carrying an extra 8 bits on every pixel for transparency. It adds up when you've got a lot of large texture maps that don't need built-in transparency. One thing I found is, a smaller image with less compression can look better and handle better than a larger image with more compression.And, of course, the image takes up memory in RAM based on its pixel dimensions, regardless of compression. So, we're really talking about a balance between download size and storage on the drive with space in RAM and how the assets look at render time. I personally find it hard to justify a gigabyte of storage space for a set of textured pillows, and I've got pillows in my library that take up that much space!
