Yeah, I know, I was grumbling into my {non-existent} beard. I've had a freebie arched bridge come up with a download size bigger than V3 (at 60Mb), and it wasn't even rigged, so I'm at fault too. But every now & again it hits me.

    Regards,

    Richard

I'm starting to think you need to actually grow that beard. laugh

The problem JPG's is you can get some nasty compression artifacts, if you are not careful with settings.

True, but I think many folks here know how to properly prepare a .jpg for use. Yes, that seems quite likely. angel

Unfortunately some PA's have had trouble with it: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/9436446#Comment_9436446 (I hope I haven't been coming across as a passive aggressive jerk lately)

Ah, well... There's that! Yes, there are a shocking number of products out there where the jpgs have artifacts. I wouldn't convert normal maps for reasons discussed in that thread and because of color shift. (No, I don't think that. smiley)

You know, it takes a lot of compression to produce artifacts like that! But pngs are carrying an extra 8 bits on every pixel for transparency. It adds up when you've got a lot of large texture maps that don't need built-in transparency. One thing I found is, a smaller image with less compression can look better and handle better than a larger image with more compression. And, of course, the image takes up memory in RAM based on its pixel dimensions, regardless of compression. So, we're really talking about a balance between download size and storage on the drive with space in RAM and how the assets look at render time. I personally find it hard to justify a gigabyte of storage space for a set of textured pillows, and I've got pillows in my library that take up that much space! surprise Anyway, I think we're wandering pretty far off topic here. Sorry.
