Complaint:  Arghhh... I just received an email from the phone company (Kinetic) saying that they will show up at my door TODAY between 3:00 and 5:00.

I'm glad to know you have someone coming who can lift a printer or move furniture.

    Happy birthday!

I think I went about twenty dollars over my budget I set for my groceries.  At least I had the extra twenty or it would be a nightmare figuring out how to reduce the total.

@NylonGirl   Thanks for the glads, and it would have been nice if it worked out that way, but the phone guy (who has come and gone and fixed my phone problem) was the same wide guy who did my original fibre installation.  I realized that his girth, short stature and short arms were not going to be much help.frown  I had tidied up my living room a bit and made walking space, but the hefting and placing of the printer(s) in that cramped space would still have been problematic.  And besides, he was on a tight schedule.  I'll wait for my neighbor to help.

Non-complaint:  Yay, my phone problem is fixed (Aye Admiral, thar be dialtones here).smiley  All he did was press the hidden "Reset" button on the fibre modem and run a few tests.indecision  It remains to be seen if the "Reset" has boogered my wireless configuration or any other settings I may have set.  But that, I can fix myself.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KYOTO KID!  Try for another trip around that nuclear fusion ball in the sky.yes

..,thank you all. had a wonderful day

Took the day off from my usual "concerned citizen" activities and was the "trivia oz" (the person who compiles and presents the questions)  for the pub's weekly Monday evening trivia.  This is not your "trivial pursuit" kind of contest, people research write up their own sets of questions (usually around 25).  The can take several forms from single answer, ti multiple choice, to True or False, multiple answer, and "bonus questions" related to the main ones.  so there can potentially be a lot of points involved.

It tends to be fairly challenging for both audience and the presenter as setting up the questions requires a fair amount of research and fact checking so there is no doubt or controversy about the answers  One of the other tough parts is having to play to a wide audience regarding age and background to make it fair and enjoyable for everyone.

After all the questions are finished the teams exchange papers with each other for correction and the presenter reads off the answers. Each member on the winning team receives a small gift certificate redeemable at the establishment.  In the case of a tie, a second set of "tiebreaker" questions (usually 4 - 5) is provided by the presenter. Rarely  doe a session ever end up tat way but it has happened on occasion.

I tend to do my questions from an "educational" perspective (the teacher in me) to let people go away with a little more knowledge than they came in with (did you know Beethoven originally dedicated his 3rd symphony ro Napoleon? - That was one of the questions phrased as a "true or false" one which I briefly elaborated on when reading the answers afterwards).

A lot of work but a lot of fun which can be exhausting as well for the "Oz". ,.Hnce I slept in a little later than usual on Tuesday morning before having brekkie and diving into catching up on my "citizen duties" that I set aside on the day before (along with a grocery run) and just finally got on the forums a short while ago after a late dinner.

Belated birthday wishes... glad to read that it was a good one for you. :)

non-complaint:  Presents wrapped! My family celebrates the Winter Solstice, but not always on the actual shortest day. If it needs to be put off due to logistical issues (like this year) we all wish each other blessings on the actual day, and Teen Kiddo and I usually do a small something in advance of the gathering with my parents and brother. Anyhow, Little Dude's sleep schedule finally allowed for getting over to my parents' house where all the supplies are and getting stuff wrapped. I even got all mine fancied up a little this year, beyond simply adding a bow to the top. Present wrapping has always been one of my favorite parts of the season, so that felt really good.

I went first to take advantage of the fact that Little Dude was currently chill hanging out with his grandfolks, and then Teen Kiddo started in on theirs... but by about halfway through little dude had hit the 13-hour-awake mark, which is often when things start coming apart, especially on an off-routine day. So he and I wound up heading out at that point, and Teen Kiddo stayed over to finish up and hang out with the fam a bit, and my dad drove them home when they were ready. Bonus points: it meant Teen Kiddo got to go on a tour of the lights around here, which they would have otherwise missed since I knew a daylight departure was inevitable for Little Dude.

So grateful for my whole-family dynamic. We're not perfect, but overall I hit the jackpot.

  • Non-complaints: 1. Early Christmas Saturday was great. Four of us got pizza & then played Red Dragon Inn. 2. I found a sale package of beef for tomorrow. (Husband, like The Grinch, enjoys Roast Beast.) 3. Son is joining us for Christmas day. 4. We are having Late New Year's with the kids on 1/3.

Complaint: Saturday night that #$&@ upper respiratory virus came bavk plus either it got to my eyes or I had a reaction to new eye drops (prescribed for something else) which then got infected. So now I am on both oral & eye antibiotics. Eyes have improved greatly but respiratory, not much.

Ooooh, sympathy on the eye stuff. If the drops are OTC, might want to check a list of recalls; I know there have been a few semi-recently that were linked to infections. (Although I know there's at least one URI going around that has pinkeye as a symptom, so there's that.) Glad your eyes are on the way up, but sorry about the rest of it. Hope you're much improved soon.

Non-complaint:  Weather warm-ish (35-40F) here on Christmas eve day but there are still many inches of snow on the ground.  Driveway is navigable.  I did a last minute grocery trip uptown yesterday and got the rest of the parts necessary to assemble chocolate chip, oatmeal, pecan cookies with real vanilla (not artificial) this morning.  Amost done, will make about 4 dozen unless I make the last glop of batter into a "King Cookie".  Mmmm... cookies.smiley  I don't need cookies, and I probably shouldn't have cookies, but I won't tell my doctor if you won't.  Four dozen seems like a lot, but they're small (about 2-2.5 inches in diameter).  I give one dozen away to neighbors, eat one dozen probably before tomorrow is over, and the other two dozen go into the freezer to try to make them last to New Years day. (rarely sucessful).indecision

Complaint:  Stirring heavy cookie batter by hand is something I'm almost not capable of doing anymore, hand arthritis, arm strength, back weariness, wobbly legs.frown  (*Sigh, gettin' old ain't worth the discount at the movies -- LG*)  I don't think I'm going to do a second batch this winter, I'll just munch the other half of the bag of dark chocolate chips, and the other half of the bag of pecans during the holidays. The Quaker Old Fashioned Oatmeal can be cooked for breakfast.  And the new baking soda box will go into the refrigerator to absorb odors, replacing the one from last years cookie session.  The flour, sugar and brown sugar and pure vanilla will last for another year.  But damn, when you add it all up, nowadays, cookies are expensive to bake at home.frown

Thanks for the info. I am better, especially eyes. I know there have been some nasty strains of colds & other URIs & I have lots of foolish co-workers & customers  who just don't care about staying the F home when they are sick.

Drops were prescription, Xdemvy. I only took one dose, thankfully. The nurse practitioner said it could be either the URI or a reaction that turned into an infection. I'm a former microbiology tech; I can see how that would happen.

...talking about preparing for the holiday takes me back to those younger days of my life.  There was nothing more wonderful than the aroma of baking for several days as my granddad and mother would trade off making the various goodies for the holidays.  Nothing better than the smell of home baked cookies, cakes, and other holiday treats wafting about the house.

Yeah, I miss baking, particularly this time of year. The store bought stuff isn't the same even from the in-store bakery (nobody makes these lovely butter cookies in different shapes with the coloured sugar sprinkles on them like Mum made.  All I can find are ones with thick icing on them.

I used to have a lovely old 1960s Sunbeam Mixmaster that worked beautifully (even had a pastry hook) but gave it away when I moved to where I am now as the kitchen seems more of an afterthought with counter and storage space about a third (at best) of what most kitchens have.

Another old holiday treat that is almost impossible to find today is that clear barley sugar candy in various shapes and colours and "rock allsorts" candy. We'd always have bowls filled with both.

Actually having it pretty good these last few days. One of the members  my Saturday D&D group (yeah I'm a geek, been that way for decades) bought a big batch of homemade cookies (including rum balls) and at Monday's trivia night one of the "off duty" barkeeps (and a long time friend) showed up with a big container of homemade cookies as well.

I also have been invited to friend's home for holiday dinner tomorrow and "libations" afterwards so a chance to experience a bit of that old "holiday magic" again,.

    Happy Yuletide everyone.

Complaint:  Christmas morning and I'm sick again.  Blech...  Before assembling chocolate chip cookies yesterday, I tidied up my refrigerator and got rid of a half dozen eggs approaching their use-by date, by boiling them and making egg salad.  The eggs are OK, but apparently the half jar of MIracle Whip salad dressing not so much.frown  I forgot the mantra "If in doubt, throw it out", but had trusted it one more time too many.  Now I can't even enjoy my cookies.crying

Complaint:  Still no printer.  Neighbor is busy with his family Christmas doings.  I don't want to bother them 'till afterwards.

Non-complaint:  I consulted my spreadsheet and discovered that I had a little more spendable coin than I'd figured.  So, I found a good deal at Amazon for an 8TB external hard drive.  Snapped it up before they ran out.  That, and some raisins.  Merry Christmas to me.smiley

Complaint:  Warm weather continued through yesterday and last night, until this morning when everything froze.  The driveway is no longer navigable.  I could stand at the top and zip my way down into the middle of the road.  Wheee...frown

Non-complaint:  BFF from high school (60+ years ago) is in town from NYC and we'll be going to lunch on Monday.  Yay, a trip uptown, a lunch at a half-decent restaurant, a means to get to shopping, at difficult to reach by public transport, places.  Gotta get to WalMart, the liquor store, & JC Penney's.

Non-complaint:  My wine cellar (i.e. small spot on my pantry shelf) has been occupied by a bottle of Mumm Sparkling Brut Prestige champagne for a couple of years.  I usually drink a less expensive brand, usually Korbel Brut once or twice a year.  But I splurged a couple years ago and got a few bottles of better brands to see if they were worth the hype(meh, perhaps for the first glass, i.e. smoother, less bitey).  The Mumm is the last of that splurge.  I put it in the refrigerator last night.  I think New Years Eve & Day I'll empty that bottle.  I really don't drink beer or wine, but I do like a good brut(dry) champagne.   When I lived in Washington DC, champagne drinking was common among the people we(my Max and I) hung out with.  When I returned to this area I tried to find people who would enjoy a bottle with me, but up here, it seems to be too pretentious to say you drink champagne.sad  So I gave up trying to find people to spend a quiet afternoon with me, enjoying a bottle.  That's OK, I can make a bottle last all day(or two days if I cork it right).yes  I only do it once or twice a year, it's not like I have to have it every Saturday night 'till I'm wobbly.

Ah yes, the old recipes. It took me decades to find my mom's fudge recipe (or as close as possible) on the Internet. With the demise of my computer, I will just have to hope the harddrive contents are recoverable. Which should be possible, since that wasn't what failed. Or I redo my search.

And I still have my (still working) 1970s Sunbeam handmixer, the first kitchen tool my dad bought for me when I was 11 or 12, when it was just him & me.

Fingers crossed for your fudge. Those old recipes are priceless. I will forever miss my grandmother's mincemeat pie, but attempts to get a recipe from her revealed that she didn't have one. She just threw whatever she had on hand in until it felt right, and thus the alchemy perished with her. Mom and I eventually cobbled together experiments from the internet until we got something kinda close, but it was never quite right.

@SilverGirl Yeah, old recipes, and the people who could execute them, even without the book.yes  My mother was one.  She baked, she fried, she broiled, she gardened, she canned.  The only recipes I got from her were her moist chocolate cake, and her oatmeal, chocolate chip cookies.smiley  But her various breads(white, salt-rising, sweet rye, date nut, orange, banana nut), her vegetable based canned sandwich spread, her lasagna, her baked venison, her meatloaf, her big baked turkey every Thanksgiving, her baked liver & onions, and the big meals at the table every night, are missed.sad  A room in the cellar was storage for her canning activites (and also my photographic darkroom).

Non-complaint:  Yesterday's food poisoning was over by late Christmas day.  Fixed myself a big dinner and had cookies for desert.

Complaint:  I have a refrigerator full of food.  Too much to eat wisely.  Some of it is going to have to be thrown out before it too spoils.  But it was nice having a big choice for the big meal for a couple of days.indecision

Non-complaint:  I actually lost two pounds over the holiday.surprise  Must'a been the food poisoning.frown
