That reminds me of when I first discovered Renaissance/Medieval music. It was with the 1960's BBC Radio adaptation of The Hobbit, at first the main title sort of repulsed me with it's very nasal and blaring crumhorns, but I pretty quickly began to adjust to it:

    <snip>

Then my love for it was cemented with the score to the Crystal Chronicles game for the Nintendo GameCube:

Some of those newer video games have such beautiful music! I never got into console gaming, but it's been my younger brother's thing since my parents bought "us" that Atari 2600, so my childhood and into my mid-20's had a constant background soundtrack of whatever he was playing. Some of it I liked a LOT more than others. =P

non-complaint: In spite of the fact that Little Dude only slept about 7 hours last night (he needs 10ish to function well) and midnight came over Hour 12 (when he often starts losing his chill even on the good days), plus we were off-routine at my parents house AND there was food everywhere (major ick for him and his ARFID)... he handled the entire day like a champ.  Yeah, kinda fixated on wanting to play in the "sand" of the cat box, but in his defense he was trying to sensory-regulate and doesn't understand why it's gross (they shovel out after every time she uses it, especially when he's over). Not a single meltdown... I was so impressed.

Tomorrow might be a train wreck, but tonight is chill, Teen Kiddo got their traditions satisfied for the holiday, and I'm eating an entire box of mac and cheese. For the moment, life is good.

Happy New Year, all. May it bring you wonderful memories, and may you enjoy them in good health.

ROFL at this description. Little Dude's baby farts literally woke his grandmother... in the next room. He was wearing a diaper at the time, so that was muffled, too. Another one was forceful enough that it made milk come out his nose, and he hadn't even eaten recently. (I laughed for a solid five minutes. I might've been a little tired.)

It was truly awe-inspiring. That child was the king of farts.

Happy New Year. Have to look at the roof tomorrow to see how close I got to being hit by a gun-shooting idiot's bullet.

LOL I'm so glad! And his sibling was 6.5 at the time, so... prime fart humor territory.

Alas he seems to have lost his knack for it as he aged. But it was fabulous while it lasted.

blush I got an 8TB for my birthday a few months ago, because my 4TB was getting full. It's not all DAZ stuff, but a lot of it is. I may have a problem.

You think you have a problem. I have a 16tb external hard drive just for DAZ stuff and it'd already almost half full.

THAT is one fat HD, i don't have the ~delete the 'packages'~ after they are installed checked; do you? that might slim your HD. Still daz3d content does make HDs look FAT.

....there are a lot of new pop musicians and bands today that I have never heard of until someone mentions their name.

Just now, I assumed Hey Jude was a band that I had never heard of. I thought they must be one of those "alternative" bands that just name themselves anything like Beck or Purity Ring.

Take issue with Purity Ring if you want (though it seems like a perfectly cromulent name to me), but Beck is just the guy's first name. Do you think Madonna and Prince are "random" names, too? If so, blame their parents.

Well it’s not that I think those are bad names. I just think their names sound random, like somebody picked a screen name on a website that said every name they wanted to choose was taken; so they just opened up the dictionary and picked the first thing they saw… or just put any two random words together.

Prince and Madonna sound like somebody was going for beauty, elegance, or at least a name that has meaning. It would be like naming a band “Beauty” or “Elegance”. It’s not the same as naming something “Knob” or “Truck Felt”.

I’m not saying they are bad names. I’m saying they sound random, and I associate random sounding names with what one might call “alternative” bands. And “Hey Jude” sounds fairly random to me, so I thought it might be an alternative band.

Like art, I think names are subjective, so Beck is fine. It’s no different than naming your daughter Nylon even though you gave her sister a name that is reasonably common and acceptable in your region. But it still sounds random, and that makes me associate it with alternative bands.

If I were the frontwoman for a band called Nylon, nobody would expect me to sing “How will I know if he really loves me?”

They would expect me to sing “I’m a loser so why don’t you kill me”

    Happy New Year though.

Non compliant: I was getting on a roll getting the kitchen cleaned.

    then I had lunch.

complaint landlady came and complained about how my organization and cleaning has not been finished.  It destroyed my self esteem and drive to clean.  Maybe I can clean some after my nap.

I don't want to go to a rock concert unless they pay me a lot of money and give me headphones to quiet down the loud noise.

...I hear you on that (pun somewhat intended)/

When groups like the Beatles the Stones and others of the day did concerts, they used just heir amps and sometimes the house sound system. Big towers of speakers were usually only used in outdoor concerts back then(often held it sports stadiums and venues like Hollywood Bowl).   Over time these "towers of sound power" made it into indoor halls at times making one feel they were standing next to a Concorde on the ground with engines running at full throttle and afterburners lit.   By then I had pretty much ceased attending rock concerts as I had moved into classical which was much easier on the ears.  I still liked a number of bands but preferred listening to them on radio or record as I could control  the volume level,

I also had enough loud noise in my life having lived under the approach/departure path to Milwaukee's airport for many years (those early jets were far louder than today).

I was at a Janet Jackson concert once, and unable to return to my seat. Because I was walking down the aisle and there was a giant speaker hanging from the ceiling and pointed directly at me. Every time I went forward, the heavy bass created enough vibration that I thought it might destroy me or something. So I ran from it. Eventually, between songs, I made it back to my seat.

I found my missing trash bags.  They were in the landlady's "office" (or the 3rd bedroom).

Personally, I would have had no expectation of what either a Nylon or a Whitney Houston would sing. I wouldn't have expected Beck to sing "I'm a loser, so why don't you kill me" until he did. Was "take me to church and I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies" what you expected Hozier to sing? If so, HOW?

I also listen to a lot of Japanese bands with names like Maximum the Hormone and Bump of Chicken, so I guess I have a higher threshold for what seems "random" to me.

...hmm, I recall there was a group  named The Nylons back in the late 1970s.  They were an acapella group from Toronto who did covers of songs.

I had plans tonight such as eating at a place at a mall.  I went to pick up my paycheck and used mobile deposit.  The money is currently not cleared which means not available.  I got a dollar bill and probably some change.  Not enough for a discount taco at taco belll.  I'm going home to find some grub to eat.

Complaint: There's no snow. Towns to the south, east and west of us have had light snow. The sea is to the north, so no snow reports from there. Anyway, I wouldn't mind some light snow when not at work, and I want to see how our Maine Coon kitten reacts, all the others we've had have loved the snow and caused so much laughter. Regards, Richard

I just saw a notice that Maximum the Hormone are going to be doing a show in March with Babymetal and Atarashii Gakko no Leaders, but sadly it will be in Japan which is like 3 bazillion miles from where I live, so I cannot go to it.  Sounds like it will be a great show though since I like all three bands/groups.

complaint: Nightmares woke Little Dude from sleep this morning (okay, 2 PM, but that's morning for us at the moment) and have had their tentacles wrapped around him all day. And it's beyond his abilities to communicate what they were about, so there's little I can do to effectively reassure him. Give hugs and a lap, dry tears, make sure he's somewhere soft when he has a meltdown, and give him painkiller to take the edge off the physcal effects of the meltdowns. And it's still clearly not enough.

His world is hard enough for him to get through. He shouldn't have to deal with nightmares on top of it. He deserves sweetness and light.

    ...and a mama who isn't so.stinking.tired.

I am so sorry. It is so rough when you can't fix everything for your kids, when you feel so helpless. You are a good mama, tired or not. I wish I could do more than a few internet hugs.

TBH those internet hugs are gold. Thank you.

One of the most brutal parts of his autism parfait is that any sort of respite (like my folks taking him for a day, or coming over to help with stuff when I'm overwhelmed) comes with a dice-roll that it'll just make things worse for him. So there's not a lot anyone can do, sadly. I'm grateful my state has programs to help so I can be here for him. I just miss the energy and indestructiblity of my 20s sometimes, LOL, as after a day like today my body would like a word. (Spoiler Alert: it contains four letters.)

Thankfully his tablet is distracting him and all he needs from me at the moment is a warm body to serve as lounge furniture. And Teen Kiddo in their mercy made me another coffee. Just gotta make it till whenever sleep claims him.

Non-complaint:  It finally stopped snowing here about 5:00 PM yesterday.  Temperatures still below 20F, yet the Microsoft Win11 weather gizmo still says "Light Rain"indecision

Hmmm..., Something New:  As I woke up this morning I said to myself "Self, time to get up and turn off the radio", but the radio wasn't on.surprise  Apparently, my dream background music was the final movement of Dvorak's New World Symphony.yes  I was hearing it clear as day and thought my radio was on.  Which is strange because I have no memories of ever hearing music during my dreams, ever.  So, this is a first.  Yes, I hear music in my head during the day, sometimes annoying earworms playing incessantly round and round in my head, but never in my dreams.  The phantom radio was clear as a bell and kind'a nice.smiley

Complaint:  I need to get to a grocery store soon.  I'm out of salad greens, milk, bread, bananas & other fresh fruit.  Yeah, yeah I wouldn't starve, I have a pantry stocked with canned goods, and my freezer's full of goodies, but fresh stuff is necessary at least for part of my intake.  It's time for laundry again, so perhaps this upcoming week I'll get to laundry, drugstore, and grocery store, and a breakfast at Burger King.  I used to toddle up to the local grocery store here in this little town, but during winter, the walk both ways(uphill going, but against the icy wind coming back) is challenging.  And I haven't got the strength to carry heavy bags anymore.  Even during summer, a local grocery trip has me huffing and puffing and collapsing on my porch steps for a few minutes to recuperate when I get back.  If I had a place to keep one, I'd get a motorized vehicle of some sort, but the logistics here aren't suitable.  And besides, the bus/Uber trip uptown (despite the expense) is good for my soul.  Aye Admiral, thar be more to the world than the four walls of my apartment.indecision

Complaint: I decided to make a cheesecake for a chnage, I have made a few before without issues (though the recipe is a bit "are you sure this is going to work?") but today the mix stayed very runny in the final stages and I really didn't think it would fold into the egg whites; lots of additional whisking later and standing for a while it set a bit more and I was more-or-less able to combine them, but still patchily so it is a good-in-parts job.

...yeah I have many musical "earworms" that are so clear they even counter my Tinnitus.  Never had it occur in a dream yet.

One symphony that will play through in its entirety is Oliver Messiaen's Turangalila Symphony.  It is a ten movement ∼70 minute long work written in 1948 that is fairly complex in harmony and rhythm.  Messiaen has some very "unique" harmonic structures and progressions and what he refers to are "non retrograde" rhythms. He also cites various influences such as birdsong, light, colour, Indian tabla, and the Indonesian gamelan.  While the work is from the modern era it is not what I consider "random atonal noise"¹, but well crafted music in his own personalised structure and style.

¹  John Cage had the "final word" on that in my book with his peice titled 4' 33'' for Piano.
