Today is Mummy's 69th birthday.
Trebuchet. Definitely need a Trebuchet.
Many years ago I saw a program about a man with a Trebuchet who was slowly using worn out wooden framed pianos to smash a copse of trees he had an irrational grudge against. On a smaller scale, printers would work just as well.
Regards,
Richard.
Non-complaint: Weather cold, but clear. Lots of snow, but plowed. Bus remembered to pick me up.
And yay, finally made it for Biscuit & Gravy breakfast at the hole-in-the-wall beanery.
Splurged and thumbed my nose at my doctor and had bacon too. Mmmm...
Also, got to uptown grocery and picked up too much stuff
. Mostly treats for holiday meals, and parts for cookie assembling. More Mmmm...
I am not allowed to cook at all in the kitchen. Not even after my housemate is finished doing her cooking. Guess I am not having dinner tonight.
ROFL - you win the internet for the day.
I used to work an educational pan-historic reenactment fair put on by a fabulous older fellow who loved building things just because he could. One of them was a trebuchet. He'd launch pumpkins into the field, and oh my gosh, I'm not sure what was better... the splatter, the reaction of the kids when it hit, or the fact that the folk who were doing the pioneer reenacting asked if they could turn their oxen loose over there once the gates were closed to clean things up. Apparently oxen love pumpkin!
...probably not printers, though.
Agreed. Is this something to do with your landlady? Because it seems like if she's forbidding you to use the kitchen, there are likely some law/code violations going on there. Is there someone higher up you can bring your issue to? (Or any chance of finding a better place to live? Seems like this one brings you a lot of stress and unhappiness... though I know "just move" is never as simple as it sounds on paper. Are there social workers in your area who could help you?)
...invented by a doctor from Dobbs Ferry?
...and here all along I thought it originated in Wiltshire UK in the parish city of the same name. Crikey, learn a new thing every day.
Non-complaint/complaint combo: Yesterday the high was 46, today's is set to be 36, and tomorrow 39. Granted this is the base temp, no wind chill factored in, but still... it'd be warm enough to go for a walk if not for the fact that there's no way the trails are going to be clear enough to manage it, especially that hill down to the lake (traction on my sneakers is no way going to be equal to the physics of that one). And also we're currently nocturnal, so we're asleep through it anyway. And three days of walk would just reset the whole process of Little Dude adjusting to the fact that we can't go for weeks after.
Back when it was just Teen Kiddo and me we would've suited up and gone for it, but now...
So close, and yet so far.
At least he doesn't know it was a possibility and has been happily oblivious and big on the snuggles. So there's one mercy.
Complaint: Well, the new printer has been found at the back of the understairs closet, and has been extracted (i.e. dragged with difficulty) into the middle of my livingroom/office/lab/museum/parts_storage_warehouse. But doing so resulted in yet another bloody nose.
I'm OK now, leak stopped, but now the holdup is getting the old printer off its table hidden behind my lab workbench area(it's a big printer), getting the new printer out of the box (it's a big printer), and back onto the table hidden behind my lab workbench.
Non-complaint: Without a functioning printer, I gave up on printing out my Christmas letter letting remote family know that I'm still alive and had a few interesting things happen during the year. The Christmas card will suffice for viability. Perhaps next year for details. Cards mailed.
Complaint: And still what to do with the old dead printer?
As much fun as it might be, and as much entertainment it might give the denizens of this town, alas, I have no trebuchet, nor any expectation of finding one soon.
That sounds like it would have been a blast.
I've seen one in action at Warwick Castle - they put on a display with a flaming ball every day. Without too much effort or counterbalance weight it sends a 11kg/25lb ball a good 200 yards, and I think it could send 200kg/440lb if they filled the counterbalance boxes with their maximum capacity of 10 tonnes. Very impressive. The damage done to a simulated Mediaeval wall with a 200kg ball is stunning. A UK Channel 4 programme in the early 1990's built several sections of simulated mediaeval wall and fired Trebuchets at them. A 5ft thick wall impacted by a 200kg ball at 200mph & a range of 200 yards produced a scab on the reverse side 7ft wide and 2.5ft deep. Two hits in the same area and the wall was breached. A stunning weapon.
Regards,
Richard.
Oh cool. I would have loved to see a flaming ball sail out of one of those things. Obviously not safe in the setting I was in, but still.
And yeah, that little fair really was a blast, partly because it was just so tremendously eclectic. If your thing was dressing up and nerding out, they were more than happy to have you. And the land was pretty, too. The fellow also had some sort of bald eagle feeding station going on, and one morning I walked out of my tent to see a couple of them soaring over the river below the cliff where I'd camped. I'm not into them the way a lot of people are, but I'd never seen one except in a zoo before that, and she was a rescue incapable of flight. It was one of those moments that makes you pause and hold your breath a little in gratitude that you got to be there for it.
NoAn-complaints: 1. Husband is doing very well 2 weeks after gall bladder surgery.
2. Getting my own Switch after several years of "sharing custody" of one with hubby. (It was an anniversary gift from Son.) Since Son got a Switch 2 I asked about buying his. He texts me back with an offer from his girlfriend to sell hers & SD card to me, so I accepted. Yeah, not going to lose my place as Pin-up Girl of Late Tech Adopters. LOL
Complaints: 1. I woke up with a cold this morning, probably 1 of the zillion things going around at work. Got a lot of (not at all) Valued Guests who shove their faces over the register into mine. Plus so many sick co-workers who, unlike me, don't have the sense to stay home. I do wear a mask at work but it's not a miracle or a force field.
2. I didn't mind not going into work today but I do mind having to skip the library staff Christmas party, where Husband is right now. I hope they like the cheese biscuits I made. Also, so much for our plans to see Zootopia 2 at the local cinema tonight.
I'm so sorry you're sick and having to miss fun things... that really sucks. Good timing for the new Switch, but still.
Not sure what kind of mask you're wearing, but if you haven't tried 3M Auras, I highly recommend them. So comfortable, good seal, and often you can get a large quantity cheap off Amazon. Sometimes the ones you get are a bit long in the tooth, but there's been research that they're still just as effective as new at 5+ years past expiration as long as the elastic on the straps is still enthusiastic, which so far mine have been. When I made the switch, I was in awe. I hadn't realized there could be such a difference, but boy howdy.
Sorta complaint :
So I've been thinking ,and wondering alot about this ,are you being ungratfull if you are irritated when people with "Good intentions" help you out ,without taking into
consideration what "you" actually want or need .....they mean the best but don't question why something is where it is ,or why it is where it is .Then if it is pointed
out ,you are complaining when they were only "helping", and that is being "ungrateful".
I don't understand ,I really don't.
I mean if you think about it the pilgrims had all good intentions (well most of them)
towards the Native Americans ,but never took into consideration ,what the Native Americans
wanted or needed ,and look how that turned out .....
IMHO if the genuine intent was to be helpful, and someone points out that what was done was not helpful, the response would be something like, "I'm sorry, that was the opposite of what I was going for. What can I do to fix it and be actually helpful to you?"
If the response is to blame you for not being grateful that they made your life harder, it seems to me they weren't doing it for you so much as the ability to feel good about themselves. You didn't perform the gratitude they were after, so now they feel slighted. Or, depending on the person/situation, it's weaponized incompetence and they're setting things up to claim it's reasonable for them to never help because you're never happy when they do. (Think throwing a red shirt in the laundry with the light colored stuff.)
Yep, that's how I view it. Don't blame me if I don't make you pleased with yourself. Don't send an overabundance of blankets to the tropics. Ask before pissing on the fire.
Non-complaint: SS deposit registered, and spent. Next month's bills paid.
Complaint: Nothing left to go into savings this month.
Yea pretty much they were disappointed that I wasn't thrilled with everything they did ... yes some of the things I was very gratefull for ,some not so much .......
I talked with my landlady on the phone earlier today. She wasn't trying to stop me from cooking but to clean the stove.
If I understand correctly, my housemate will be moving out soon.
And it's certainly understandable to be bummed that they thought they were helping and then to find out they were wrong, if their heart was in the right place. However, it's a THEM problem, and they need to own that and learn for next time. I mean, heck, my Teen Kiddo knew the rule of "ask if the help is helpful" when they could still count their age on one hand. Granted, they've always been way ahead of the curve, but if a bright 4-year-old can manage it, I feel confident an adult should be able to as well.
I was assigned a book for one of my classes for my BSN about the disaster in Haiti, and how all the "help" that was sent just made things worse. (Don't remember the title/author offhand, could look it up if anyone wants.) It was really well written and extremely heartbreaking. And granted that's a very extreme case, but the point still stands. Roads paved with good intentions can still lead to undesirable locations.
Complaint/Non-Complaint: Colorado's high winds came and decided to stay a bit longer. While I waited for the water meter installation yesterday, I was watching my local news station and heard that by 10am Xcel had turned off power to 50,000 locations on the far west of the Front Range. During the day it raised due to wind to over 120,000 locations and is now down to 100,000. Debris is left all over the roads and highways. Some schools and the universities are closed due to damage in Boulder County.
Last night at 10:30pm I woke up from a nightmare and turned on my iPad and checked X for news. Found that multiple wild fires had started in the NE/E of the state and were growing. Farmers and ranchers were moving heavy equipment to help build fire breaks. Some folks this morning are being allowed to return home. But the winds are still blowing.
Our water meter was installed, but we had a bad transmitter. A new one will be installed again today. At least it will not require our water to be shut off. The cats will be happy, yesterday totally freaked them out totally.
I think we got off a lot better than the emergency management teams around the state.
Oh, we have one day at our temps dropping from the 60s to the 30s. It currently feels like 27F.
While I typed that post, we had 2 cloudfare outages.
and they called the wind "Mariah " .....
Oh yeah and from one of my favorite musicals.
Yup yup !!
I want a figure for DS that looks like this and very fluffy, too. Can dforce hair work on a model like this?
I was allowed to use the range tonight! I made this.
I think I lost theater nerd points... I needed to look up the reference, and I've never seen that show! Is the movie adaptation decent?
@memcneil70 - Yipes in the weather, power, and fire issues out your way... I hope things subside soon. Are you safe where you are? (My knowledge of Colorado geography is pretty limited, mostly based on one roadtrip to visit friends 20+ years ago...)
Non-complaint: Sid the Science Kid (show on PBS... premise is great but the animation and voices are awful) has a song about how the kids love their moms because their moms love them even when they [break rules, make a mess, interrupt them incessently], and lately Little Dude has taken to pulling that one up on his tablet and bringing it over to me when he wants me to sit down so he can have a lap.
He's very affectionate and shows his love for the people around him in a lot of ways, so I've never minded that he hasn't said the words. Words just aren't his thing, most times. This one was a great big hug to my heart thought.
Non-complaints: 1. We are having Early Christmas with the (grown) kids tomorrow. Pizza & games.
2. Son sent us a hand drawn (he is good) Christmas card that was very touching.
3. Cold is better
(The Dogs') Complaints: Wednesday Mom was too sick to take us on a walk & Dad isn't recovered enough from surgery to do so. We did get let out often & got extra treats, but not enough to make up for the inconvenience. Also, Mom didn't give us all her chicken last night as a chaser for dinner.
@memcneil70 I am glad you are okay. The winds last night weren't as bad as CO. (North central Arkansas)
@SilverGirl that is such a sweet thing.
